NORTHBORO - Norman D. "Danny" Fay, 69, of 4 Shadylane Ave. died yesterday in The Medical Center of Central Massachusetts - Memorial, Worcester, after a short illness.
He leaves his wife, Louisa (Brown) Fay; three sons, Steven Fay of Sutton, Warren Fay of Whitinsville, and William Fay of Boylston; a daughter, Cheryl Fiske of Northboro; two brothers, Walter Fay of South Dartmouth and Charles Fay of Cambridge; 10 grandchildren; nephews and nieces. He was born in Milford, a son of Horace D. and Annnie (True) Fay, and lived in Upton before moving to Northboro 40 years ago. Mr. and Mrs. Fay were married Jan. 1, 1944.
Mr. Fay was a World War II Army veteran. He served with the 503rd Combat Military Police in Europe. This unit was Gen. George S. Patton's personal protection unit. He was awarded the Purple Heart for wounds he received when he was shot in Germany during the final assault to Berlin.
He was a model maker at Morgan Construction Co. in Worcester for 37 years, retiring in 1985.
Mr. Fay was known as "Grandfather Steam," building scale models of steam engines and was recognized by the National Association of Professional Engineers. He was given an honorary degree from the association in 1990. The Danny Fay Model Engineers Society is a group involved in making steam engines. He was a member of the Straw Hollow Engine Club of Boylston, and a director of the Wireless and Steam Museum, East Greenwich, R.I. He ran the steam table of antique stationary engines at many of the meets throughout New England and Canada.
Funeral services will be at 2 p.m. Thursday in Leland-Hays Funeral Home, 56 Main St. Burial will be in Howard Street Cemetery. Calling hours at the funeral home are 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. tomorrow. The family requests flowers be omitted. A memorial service will be at 1 p.m. Saturday in Trinity Church, 23 Main St. Memorial donations may be made to the Wireless and Steam Museum, Tillinghast Road, East Greenwich, R.I. 02818.
