The Leonard Herbert Fay Family

Leonard D. Fay, son of Josiah and Experience

Leonard D. Fay, son of Josiah and brother of Alvah, was born about 1829. He married Sarah Kennedy, who was born August, 1834 in Canada. Their oldest child Laura Louisa was born in Canada; the other nine children were born in Minnesota. (One child must have been born and died in early infancy; it also seems that N.C., a son, died early). In 1900, seven are still living. Below is a summary of the information I have found:

The first census record found so far records Leonard in Canton, Fillmore Co, MN, Canton, very close to Josiah his brother. The ages seen here do not agree with the birth dates given in the 1900 census.

In 1900 still in Canton, Sarah is a widow, living with "Elma", Sept 1859; Milton, Oct 1868; Delbert, Oct 1879; Herbert, Aug, 1877. Elma is said to have had one child, and that child is living. A mistake of the census taker? Sarah had 10 children, 7 are living.

Guy is working on a farm and boarding with James McDowell.

1920

One of the things which has made it a special challenge to trace this group is that fact that they seem to use different names in every census. An example is the man who seems to have been named "John Adelbert." In 1880, he is "Adelbert;" 1900, "Delbert;" 1920, "Dell;" 1930, "John A.;" and on his death certificate in 1968, "John Delbert." The presence of other family members, as well as ages and places of birth, confirm that this is the same man.

Similarly, "Leonard Herbert" [death certificate] is sometimes "Herbert;" sometimes "Leonard H."

Guy, on the other hand, appears with the same name wherever we see him.

Still missing for the moment is Alma/Elma.

1930

The family is still in Fillmore County, Minnesota.
