Between 1830 and 1840, New York and Pennsylvania communities were experiencing rapid growth. If one compares a map of Erie County, PA, created in 1831 (left) with one drawn in 1840 (right), the difference is clear. Joel Fay was a part of the growth, as he brought his family to Concord, a town showing on the 1840 map. By 1840, the census shows him established in Concord (see below). |

1850 |
In the house with Joel is his mother, Lucy Fay (in 1860 she is called Lucy Smith.). Three houses away is her (ex)husband Elijah Smith, living with Sylvanus Avery. Close by is Joel's stepsister Thankful Smith Burgess and her husband Simon. Also close are John Lilly with his family, Abner Lilly and his family, and Prince Lilly and his wife. Prince is Joel's uncle. Eliza, Olive, Jane, Harriet and Sarah are with Joel; Harriet is dead, and he does not marry Rebecca until later. There are two questions here: who is James Nickerson age 12, and why is he here? And where is Antoinette? She was born in 1847. She does appear in the census of 1860. |
1860 |
Joel and Rebecca; Sarah, Antonette; and Lucy Smith, now age 78. |
1870 |
Joel and Rebecca; Sarah; Antoinette; Mary, Martha; Joel M. Jr.; and Simon Burgess, Joel's stepbrother in law, a "pauper." Lucy is gone. |
1880 |
1880 shows us just the immediate family, although as usual, the household is surrounded by other families already observed in connection with Joel. The census taker was a bit careless with spelling. |
