Although Jedediah did not take part in the first settlement of Calais, which was made in 1787 by Abijah, Asa and Peter Wheelock, he was among the earliest settlers. By 1789, the Wheelocks had been joined by Moses Stone, Samuel Twiss and Francis West. Jedediah's first child seems to have been born in Calais in 1794, and at the first town meeting of Calais on March 23, 1795, Jedediah was elected one of three listers. The full name of Jediah's wife is not known, but she is listed in the records of Calais as compiled by LDS as "Polly." I have not been able to find out anything more about her.
What Orlin writes about the children of Jedediah leaves many open questions. For example, he writes that Sarah daughter of Henry married and had 5 children; and that Willard married and had two children. In Willard's case, I discovered information that allowed me to fill in the names of his wife and child. In the census of 1900, Lizzie (Elizabeth Ball) Fay registers only one child, and the timing of the marriage and birth does not seem to permit any more than one child. I was not able to find Willard and Lizzie in either 1870 or 1880. It is possible that Orlin confused Willard with Wallace G. Fay, who lived at the same time in the same area but was actually the grandson of Ansel Asa.
The names of the men that Polly (b. 1802) and Susan (b. 1803) married appear in a Vermont Chronicle. While I have found Susan and her husband in census records, I have not been able to find Polly and Daniel Remick. Daniel is listed in the census of 1830, but I can't spot him in 1850 or 1860, and I can't find Polly in 1850, although Orlin says she did not die until 1857.
