Hans Adam Fey was born in Schneppenbach, Germany, a tiny village belonging to the Hunsr�ck communities in present day Rheinland-Pfalz. (see the article in Wikipedia and Gemeinde Schneppenbach for details and more information about the town).

The original spelling of the family's last name is not known; it might have been FEY or FEI or FE� (see Hans J�rgen Fey's note about how the name is found in Germany). The family in the United States has used FEY and FAY. In one census, the name appears as FIE. The one most frequently found now is FAY.

It is not known what Hans Adam's work was. He might have been a farmer or he might have worked in the local shale industry (see below). He might also have been a weaver; certainly some of his descendants were weavers, and they may have been following in his footsteps.

Most of the descendants of Hans Adam seem to have remained in Germany. It is said that the house in which Hans Adam lived is now in the possession of one of his descendants, a Martini family.

It was Charles, a greatgrandson of Hans, who left Schneppenbach for Oberstreit. We shall follow him next.
