Dennis Floyd provided an exact birth date for John and a marriage date for the couple. They were married in Baldwin, WI, 24 miles from Star Prairie.
The census of 1900 says that John was born in November 1859. Floyd has October 1859. Minnie is said to have been born in November 1867. In all of the records which I have seen her name is given as 'Minnie' (or a variant spelling of that). Except for Floyd's material, I have never seen 'Almeda' -- he may have found that on her marriage certificate and nowhere else. There is one ancestry tree at ancestry.com which has almost the same information but is not sourced, and I think it probably came from Floyd. John's headstone in Star Prairie has no dates; and no headstone was found for Minnie. It should be noted that Isabelle's birth is given as February 1889 on the census of 1900, when she is 11. John and Minnie are said to have been married 10 years. Both John and Minnie are listed in the census of 1920; I did not find them in 1930.
Minnie "Shasby" can be found with her parents in the census lists of 1870 and 1880. |

I found Isabelle listed with her parents in the censuses of 1900, 1905, and 1910. I do not see her in 1920. She would be old enough to be married already, but I don't see Isabelle Rohn, and I don't see William. Nor do I see any of the family in 1930. "Rohn" is sometimes spelled "Rone" and it is possible that William and Isabelle are there and their name is simply incorrectly listed. The information for the marriage came from Dennis, with an 'echo' in the ancestry tree. |

Floyd was married three times. This fact gradually became clear as research progressed. The original information mentioned only "Julia G." and made John Eldon the son of Floyd and Julia. Then came the query about Floyd's wife Lucy, and her dates made it clear that she preceded Julia. Lucy appears in the census of 1930, with Floyd and three children, John, Dorothy and George. It is clear from the dates that John cannot be Lucy's son either, so whose son was he? An analysis of the 1920 census showed Floyd, boarding, close to his parents John and Minnie; and Floyd's wife was with John and Minnie. There can be no question of it; her name is Mary and she is called their 'daughter in law.' A marriage entry was found for Floyd Fay and Mary Schoetle, August 2, 1919, in the Eau Claire County Marriage Index. This was supported by a newspaper clipping reporting that they applied for a license on July 30, 1919. The birth of their son came AFTER the census; so she was at his parents' house awaiting the birth of their child. Her widowed mother lives in the same area. After the birth of their son, the couple seems to have separated; family records know of Mary, and indicate that she was divorced from John; and went 'west.' There is a Mary with all the right identifying marks living in 1930 with an uncle, Leo Krause. I think (really only a hunch) that Mary's mother was sister to Leo, and it would tell us a bit more about what happened to Mary. It doesn't say why she left her son, though. |

John's dates come from the Eau Claire County Death Index and SS. The maiden name of his wife is provided by the death certificate for their son, John A. and the autopsy report. That same report mentions a brother Eric for John A. A search of public records and Intellius indated that there were at least four children. |

Nothing further seems to be known of her. See above under Floyd. |
