Census information for Dana Fay and his family |
|
Dana appears for the first time as head of house in 1830, and by that time he is already in Boston, Suffolk County, where he will remain. His household is interesting; we see him (male 30-40)[he was born 1797 and would be 33] and Martha (female 20-30)[she was born 1799 and would be 30]. We also see Mary Elizabeth (female 5-10)[she is 6]. By 1840, Dana's household includes ONLY these three people, each of course ten years older (male 40-50)(female 30-40)(female 10-15).
In 1830, however, there are more people living with Dana. We see two males 15-20, two males 20-30, and a female 20-30. Dana's father Reuben is still in Southborough; he is 58. In his household are two daughters. But the rest of his family are elsewhere. It is tempting to think that Dana has siblings in his household in 1830.

In 1840, Thomas Greenleaf is still living at home with his father Luke in Southborough. The census records Luke, Grace, and all 9 children, 4 boys and 5 girls. We have Harriet and Georgina, age 5-10, Eveline and Delia, age 15-20, and Martha, age 20-30. Males in order of age: Edward is the youngest, then Samuel, George, and Thomas Greenleaf who is 20.

There is a real puzzle in 1850. In spite of repeated searches, Thomas Greenleaf and Mary Elizabeth, who were married early in the 1840's and now have a daughter Mary Anna, born in 1843, cannot be found in the census records for 1850. Thomas just drops out of sight. In 1860, we do see the women (see below).
Dana and Martha are living with the Atwoods in Boston. It is not clear who the "Mary Fay" in the neighboring household is. She is 20; so it is tempting to identify her as "Mary Elizabeth" born 1823; but the age would be quite far off; and where is Thomas? It just won't do. In view of that difficulty, I am inclined to believe the "Ireland" it gives as place of birth, and see her presence there as coincidence.

Luke and Grace have only three children still at home in Southborough.

Henry Bullard is living in West Brookfield, Worcester County, with wife Caroline, and children Emerson, Martha and Sylvester. This is Sylvester Gilman Bullard, who later marries Mary Anna Fay.

|
In 1860, Dana and Martha have their daughter Mary Elizabeth and granddaughter Mary Anna living with them in Boston. There is no sign of Thomas.
|
|
Luke is gone now. Grace is living with her daughter Eveline and her husband, Charles Whiting, in Brookline.

Henry, Caroline, and children including Sylvester, in West Brookfield.

Gilman and Mariana D. and the 7 month old Egbert are living in Worcester. With them is Martha P. Fay, who is 67. Martha is Mariana's stepgrandmother; she was the second wife of Dana, Mariana's grandfather. Her presence with Mariana makes me think that both Thomas and Mary Elizabeth Fay are gone by now.

Egbert is living with his mother. Note the spellings in the index. Below is the image; it looks to me like "MaryA. and "Bullard"
