3rd son of Horace Daniel and Annie True Fay. Born at Upton, Mass. 2-11-1934.

He attended public schools of Upton, Mass., graduated from Jr. High of Northbridge and then graduated from Sr. High at Grafton June 1950. He entered Worcester Trade Schoo, [sic]graduating as a Draftsman in 1952.

He accepted a position in Engineering Dept. of Draper Corp. of Hopedale, Mass.
|
|
He is an artist of exceptional ability and strives for perfection in what ever he does. His hobbies: interested in astronomy and optics. He built a six inch telescope when he was still in High School.

He has one of the finest High fidelity sound reproduction sets in the State.
|
|
Color photography comes in for it's share of interest as does good music. His great love is mountain climbing.
He is a member of the Appalachian Mountain Club. As an Alpinest he has climbed most of the major mountains of New England and takes great interest in their trails and camps. He has also climbed in Germany in the Bacarian [sic] Alps.

In February 1956 he and four companions were caught in an avalanche in Tuckerman's Ravine at Mt. Washington, N.H.. All were buried but Charles who kept himself on top by using a swimming motion. He dug out one of his companions, George Spear. Then togther they dug out two more, Frank Trusdale and Albert Sanderson, but the fifth member of the party, Dr. Aaron Levy, perished. A bronze marker erected by his companions marks the spot of Levy's memory. They also founded a Scholarship Fund in his name at Northeastern University where he taught.

Charles entered the United States Army Dec. 3, 1956., Serial #51390280, and received his basic and advanced training in D. Co. 37th Tank Bn 4th Armored Division at Fort Hood, Texas. He left Texas June 2, 1956 for Port of embarkation, arriving 5: P.M. June 4. He sailed from Brooklyn Army Pier June 7 on the U.S.S. Randal. He arrived at Bremerhaven, Germany on the 15th. Had a three hour ride to Gelnhausen and Colman Kersen, his new home for the next one and a half years.

He later qualified for Communications Chief and sent to school for three months in Ausbach Aug. 1, 1957.

While at Ausbach he made several trips to the Bavarian Alps and climbed Germany's highest mountain, the Zugspitz.

He was assigned to Co. D Ist Med. Tank Bn 33rd Armor. APO 39 New York.
