In the main entry for Benjamin Fay, Orlin places Benjamin's birth on August 28, 1780, in Hardwick (the vital records of Hardwick say that the year was 1779). Of Benjamin's marriage, Orlin says, "One account is that he m. Wid. Sally Morse, probably he m., 2d, Mrs. Harriet (Alvord) Smith..." I don't think Orlin is totally convinced by this, though; in the short biography, Orlin makes no mention of Morse. "Sally Morse" was a common name, as was "Benjamin Fay," and I suspect that there was a bit of confusion there. In any event, Benjamin joined his brother David, who has been discussed elsewhere on this site. They lived in and around Rutland Vermont, and it was here that Robert Emmet Fay was born. He must have left Vermont at a young age, for in 1850 he is in Massachusetts and 1860 finds him in New York City with Elmira. Robert died young, leaving Elmira with a son, Emmet. They are still in their own household in 1870, but by 1880, they have joined the household of Elmira's parents, George and Mary Conkling.
