Census information for Samuel Alexander Feay and his family |

The 1820 census is the first one where Levi is clearly to be seen. Born in Maryland, he has married, started a family and moved to Pennsylvania. He is living in
Hempfield, Westmoreland, PA, indexed as Levi Fray but pretty clearly Feay. Westmoreland is just north of Fayette, Hempfield is just about in the middle of the county. Levi would be 37, Mary about the same or a little younger. The household contains:
males one 10-15 (Samuel Alexander would be 15); one 26-45 (Levi); one over 45
females: two 26-45 (one is Mary)
Who are the older man and the other woman? Do Levi's father and sister live with them? |

| It looks as if Levi just had the one child.

Levi, who is now 47, has reached Springhill, Fayette County, PA. Here, he and Mary are alone. Next door to them is another Levi Feay, a much younger one. That household contains two males under 5, and one male 20-30; and one female 20-30. It seems clear that this is most likely Samuel Alexander, the son of Levi, not another Levi. Alexander would be 26, Mary about the same; Levi, the older son of Alexander and grandson of Levi (perhaps that is where the confusion came from?) is a year and a half and Henry Samuel is a baby.

The 1840 census finds the two families side by side in West Monongalia Township, Monongalia County, VA. In 1840, Alexander would have been about 36; Levi would have been 12; Henry 10; Urilla 7; Joseph not quite 5. The census shows:
males--two 30-40; one under five; one 5-10; one 10-15;
women--one 5-10; one 30-40.
It is a perfect fit. However, the second male is a mystery. A brother to Alexander? or farm labor?
Next door, Levi and his wife, he in his fifties (1840-1783=57), she about the same age.

Alexander is 45. He is widowed, and lives with seven of his 10 children. Henry is with his grandparents; Levi, born 1828, is missing; as is Anna (see discussion under the 1860 census). Note that George and Susan were born in VA; they would have been born in 1840 and 1842. This fits with Alexander's presence in Virginia for the 1840 census.

Levi and Mary McCoy Fay are still in Pennsylvania. Henry, son of Alexander, is living with his grandparents. In the next year, he will marry in Pennsylvania, and not return to Iowa until later.

Alexander has remarried; Christine is 49. George and James are still with him. We now find Elizabeth and Alice, who are clearly Alexander's children with Christine. In addition, John, at age 10, does not show up in the 1850 census. He might be the first child born to Alexander and Christine, or he might be from Christine's first marriage. Anna is most probably Christine's daughter by her first marriage. If she were Alexander's, she would have been recorded in the 1850 census, and she is not. So she must have been two when Christine and Alexander were married.

Henry and Mary are now in Iowa, in Mendon, Clayton County. They have four children, Alex (Samuel Alexander), 9, Margret, 7, John, 5, and Marian, 2.

Levi is in Virginia, the home of his wife Mary. Mary died in 1853, and one could guess that Levi took her back to her Virginia home before the end. In any case, Levi is living in Monongolia County, Virginia. With him are Jane Dickenson and two young girls. Jane is 34, was born in Virginia. Her older daughter Mary was born in VA in 1854, and her younger daughter in PA in 1859. How does she happen to be keeping house for Levi?

Henry, age 39, and Mary are now in Giard, Clayton Co, with their seven children, Alex, now called Samuel; Margret, John, Marian, Oliver, Mary and Catharine.. Margaret was born in PA about 1854 and John was born in IA about 1856, indicating that the family moved in this period. The youngest child, Henry Edmund, will not be born for another two years.

Joseph E. and Celestine are living in Sperry.

Henry is still in Giard. Six children are at home. The two oldest are missing.
Note the spelling of the last name. It is interesting that Henry and his brother Joseph use Feay, while James, another brother, uses Fay.
