Abner S. Fay (10/6/1826 - after 1900) And his Descendants |
|
Abner married Sarah N. Barker on September 9, 1850 in Salem, New York. Orlin provides this information and writes that Abner was a printer. In all of the census documents where he is listed, from 1860 on through 1900, he is listed as a farmer. I believe that Orlin simply made a mistake; Abner's sister Ella married a printer, and I think Orlin's eye slipped in this case. |
Abner was born in Massachusetts, moved to New York, married there in 1850, and was farming in Portland (Fredonia) by 1860. Between 1870 and 1880, he moved to Iowa; and by 1885 he had moved to Kansas. Sarah died between 1885 and 1895. In 1900, Abner has just one grandson in his household. Fredrick Shinn is one of two grandchildren who are first listed with Abner in 1880 (ages 4 and 1). There is no indication at all of their father, and all of Abner's children are listed with the last name of Fay. He had two daughters, Ella and Flora; and Ella is listed in the "married" column, while Flora is listed in the "single" column. My guess based on the 1880 census was that these are Ella's children, and that she was in the process of being divorced. |
This guess was later confirmed by the Kansas state census of 1885. Abner's household consists of himself, Sarah, Ella Shinn, Lettie Shinn, 9, Freddie Shinn, 7, Henry Fay and George Fay. In 1895, Abner (A.S.), Henry (H.A.), and the two Shinn children are in Mitchell County (L. M. and F. E. Shinn). Fred is still with his grandfather in 1900, but by 1910 has married and started a family, moving from Kansas to North Carolina to Arkansas to Oklahoma, where he was in 1930. |
Abner and Sarah had a son in 1853. In the census of 1860, he is called Albert, in 1870 and 1880, he is called Henry. I have not been able to find him after 1895, when he appears in the Kansas State census with his father. |
Abner's son George was with his father in Kansas in 1885. By 1890 he had married and had a son, Clarence, born 6/28/1890. |
Most of our information about this family comes from Orlin or from the census; more recent information was found in obituaries for Robert Leroy and Charlene Bell Fay and for Betti M. Fay Odom. Ancestry trees and world trees have provided some dates and marriages. There seems to be some question about the maiden name of Abner's wife. Orlin has it "Sarah N. Barker," while the ancestry trees list "Sarah W. White." I think Orlin is correct. |
