Robertson and Jerkins

Robertson

Sarah Ellen Robertson, was born December 24, 1850 , probably in Marion County, Florida. She was the daughter of Ozias P.Robertson and Clarissa Harley Jane Jerkins. She was raised by her Step-Father Middleton D. Rogers, whom she named her only son after, George Middleton Dykes. She married Jasper J. Dykes November 7, 1867 . She died September 6, 1883 of complications of childbirth after the birth of her eighth child, Susan M Dykes. She is buried in the Fort Mason Cemetery, near Eustis, Lake County, Florida. ( see Cemetery Record Page)

Ozias P Robertson, was born in South Carolina January 27, 1817.. He married Clarissa Harley Jane Jerkins December 7, 1848 in Marion County, Florida. He and Clarissa were living next door to her family, the Jerkins, on the 1850 census of Marion County, Florida. Ozias was the son of Thomas Marmaduke Robertson and Janet Capers. Ozias died before 1852. Johns S. Jerkins, was the Administrator of his estate according to Marion County, Florida Probate records, dated January 15, 1852.

Thomas M Robertson, was born about 1784 near Charleston, South Carolina. He married (1) Janet Capers, born in South Carolina. He moved to Florida about 1843, settling on Bounty Land acquired from the United States of America for his service in the war of 1812, South Carolina Militia, Captain Walters Company. The Robertson family was one of the first families to settle on land that is now Leesburg, Florida. The Thomas M Robertson homestead was located on property that now comprise the heart of Leesburg. Thomas died in Moss Bluff, Florida on December 27, 1858. A memorial was erected in the Lone Oak Cemetery, Leesburg by the Daughters of the Revolution because he was the first person to own land in Leesburg. Thomas may have had a second marriage because his wife's name on the 1850 census of Marion County, Florida was Sarah.

Thomas had the following children: Thomas E Robertson, b 1810, died 1870/1880; Mary L. Robertson, b 1813; Sarah B. Robertson ; Ozias P Robertson ; Ann Rebecca Robertson b July 4 1819 - d about 1860; John Marmaduke Robertson b July 19, 1822 - d August 20, 1878; Richard Raymond Robertson b October 7 1826 - d before 1880; Caroline Capers Robertson b September 28 1829 - d June 6 1878.

Jerkins Family

The Jerkins family has been very rewarding to search out. It started with my Grannies picture of her G Grandma "Rogers" . When I found the grave of Clarissa H. J. Rogers in the Ponceannah Cemetery, Lake County, Florida, beside her was buried Sarah Jerkins! From this clue I was able to put the puzzle together. Thanks to many other researchers for helping to fill in the gaps.

Clarissa Harley Jane Jerkins, born June 6, 1829 in Georgia, the daughter of John S. Jerkins and Sarah (Nipier?). She married December 7, 1848, Ozias P Robertson. She and Ozias apparently had one daughter, Sarah Ellen Robertson. Ozias Robertson died before 1852 and she married Middleton D. Rogers. She and Middleton were living in Orange County, Florida on the 1860 census with the following children: John P Rogers age 6, William M Rogers age 4, Mary E Rogers age 1?, and Sarah E. Robertson age 9. Clarissa helped raise her grandchildren when Sarah died after the birth of her eighth child. She lived in Lake County, near Paisley on Lake Norris. Clarissa died April 19, 1913 and is buried in the Ponceannah Cemetery, Lake County, Florida between Middleton D Rogers and her mother, Sarah Nipier? Jerkins. Her tombstone reads " Faithful to her Christ, Even until the End".
