Caroline A. Phelps, was born in Fayetteville, N. C. according to the 1860 census of Savannah Georgia. She was born about 1829. She migrated with her parents to Savannah, Georgia by 1840. She married Henry Atkinson of Nova Scotia in Savannah on June 15, 1853. Her mother was Rebecca Cobb Phelps born 1805,probably in Edgecombe Co., NC. and her father was Jordan Phelps. born between 1790-1800, of 1830 census,Fayetteville, Cumberland Co., NC. Caroline Phelps Atkinson was listed as a "milliner" on the 1860 census. She died between 1862 and 1870 place unknown at this time.

 

Mrs. Rebecca Cobb Phelps, was the mother of Caroline and was living with her family,(Henry Atkinson) on the 1860 census in Savannah , age 55, born in Fayetteville,(Cumberland Co.) N.C. Her occupation was listed as "seamstress". She was also on the 1850 and 1840 Census records of Savannah, Ga. . In 1850, she was head of household with daughter , Caroline age 19. In 1840, she was head of household with two females, one under 5, and one between 10 and 15. In 1843 a child , aged 5, named Rebecca Phelps ( born in Augusta, Ga.) died in Savannah in the Widow's Asylum. I believe this was the other female child who was in her house on the 1840 census and is missing on the 1850 census. Rebecca died in Dawson,Terrell Co. Ga.in July, 1868.

Jordan Phelps, was listed as age 43 when he died September 27, 1839 in Savannah, Georgia of "bilious fever". He was from North Carolina. There was also a male infant Phelps who was born in Savanah in September 1839 and died Oct. 9, 1839. This information came from the Savannah Burial Register.

Jordan Phelps was listed as bondsman for Nathaniel Pebworth and Mary Hill in 1828 on the Cumberland County, NC marriage records. He is on the 1830 census of Fayetteville, North Carolina living two doors from Nathaniel Pebsworth.
