A Mysterious Death
A postal card from Judge W D Fortune at Tinney's Grove informs us that the dead body of Elizabeth Evilsizer, widow of the late (Thomas) Jeff Evilsizer who was murdered some years since, was found at her residence on Sunday. Remains were in an advanced state of decomposition showing the death had occurred some time ago. No particulars were obtainable and nothing could be learned to throw light upon the matter. Was it a murder or had death come from natural causes which are not yet answered. The deceased lived on Mud Creek.

From the Richmond, Mo Conservator - Thursday August 31, 1891
A Grave Charge
Mrs. Elizabeth Graham arrested for the murder of Mrs. Evilsizer.
On Sunday, July 10, the dead body of Mrs. Elizabeth (Miller) Evilsizer, a widow who lived alone on her farm about five miles west of Tinney's Grove, was found in her home in a badly decomposed condition. Her throat was cut from ear to ear, and the body was in such a bad condition that it had to be rolled in a quilt and placed in the coffin, without being washed. That she had been murdered there could be no doubt, but the author of the awful crime was unknown. The nephew of the dead woman, S H Miller was in Oklahoma at the time of her death, and was subsequently notified. He arrived in this County a few days after her burial and at once began a search for the assassin of his kinswoman. Last Saturday, he swore out a warrant against Mrs. Sarah Graham, a neighbor of Mrs. Evilsizer, charging her with the crime of murder in the first degree. Sheriff Perdue went up last Saturday and served the warrant and brought the prisoner to this city. On Sunday he took her to Carrollton and lodged her in jail. We do not know what the evidence is against Mrs. Graham, but have heard in a circumstantial way that it is very strong. On Wednesday evening before the body of Mrs. Evilsizer was found, Mrs. Graham was seen going toward the Evilsizer farm, and late the same night she was overtaken by a farmer on a wagon and taken to Braymer, where she spent the night at a hotel. Her clothes were wet and bedraggled as though she had been trying to wash them or had walked through the grass and weeds. When Mrs. Evilsizer's house was searched after the finding of her body, the table was found set with three plates as though she was expecting company. In the kitchen, the coffee pot and other cooking vessels were found on the stove and thirteen slices of meat were laying on the table and other things went to show she was preparing a meal other than for herself. It is said that the two women were not on the best of terms, and that the trouble between them dates back to the time when they were neighbors in Pennsylvania. Mrs. Graham has retained as her attorney, Mssrs Garner and Scott and J W Shotwell

The Chief- Cowgill, MO- July 24, 1891
During the later part of last week, passers by saw no one going about the house, which was shut up closely. On Sunday morning, George Rogers, Billy Malone, Isaac Hatfield and others went to the house to investigate and upon entering the west room were horrified to find the decaying corpse of Mrs. E (vilsizer)who had evidently been dead several days. The body lay on the floor, knees being drawn up, one arm extended and the other across the breast. The face was black and swollen beyond recognition, and the odor arising from the remains, together with their putrid condition made it impossible to de tech any violence. The outer doors were closed and not locked and the windows of the room were darkened by papers pinned up on the inside and the outer blinds being closed. Nothing about the house seemed disturbed, $10 in money being found upstairs besides several thousand dollars worth of notes and mortgages.

August 15,1891-Severy, KS
Sinclair Evilsizer was born June 19,1819 in Rockingham Co, Virginia and emigrated in an early day with his parents to Morgan County, Indiana. In the year of 1838 he was married to Perlina Walters; by this union there were twelve children, of which only five remain to mourn the death of their father, three girls and two boys. In the year 1840 he moved to Ray County, Missouri and settled on a farm proving a successful farmer. April 1st, 1884 he came to Greenwood County, Kansas with his family and settled at Severy, where he resided until his death, which occurred at 6:10 p.m. August 18, 1891, after an illness of eleven days, at the advanced age of 72 years, 3 months and 1 day. The funeral services were held at the Congregational church at 4 p.m., last Friday after which the body was interred in Twin Groves Cemetery. He professed religion in 1867 but never united with any church, but being a strict Baptist in belief. He was a loving husband, a kind and affectionate father and a friend to all in need; respected by all who knew him. During his illness he was a patient sufferer, never complaining, and his death is a quiet sleep. When his wife would tell him she could not give him up, he would say "It won't be long". We shall miss him for he is gone.

The Champaign Democrat, Urbana, Champaign County, Ohio, Thursday, August 11, 1892
William EVILSIZOR, Sr was born in Kanawah County, Virginia (now West Virginia) June 8, 1808. He emigrated to Champaign County, Ohio, with his parents about 1814. The Evilsizor's came originally from the Shenandoah Valley of Virginia. In the fertile valley of Mad River Township, Champaign County, they settled on the farm of Abraham Pence, later owned by W S Garret.
The County then was a dense forest. The red man and wild animals were common features. Many trees had been felled, in order to make a way for their present home, and it is certain that the deceased did his share of the work for his life of industry, economy, and honest integrity. Here he prospered, sufficient to gain means which placed him beyond want.
William Evilsizor, Sr and Nancy Jenkins were married December 10, 1829, in Champaign County, Ohio. Their marriage applications noted that Edward Jenkins, brother to Nancy, made oath that his father gave consent. To this happy union were born thirteen children, seven sons and six daughters. After 29 years, their happy union was severed by death of the wife, which occurred February 15, 1858, at the age of 44 years.
Again he was married May 26, 1859 to Frances Jane Allison. They had seven children, four sons and three daughters. After 26 years, their union was severed by the death of his second wife on march 31, 1885, at the age of 54 years. Mr Evilsizor has 20 children. 11 sons and 9 daughters. About 14 years before his death, he united with the Harmony Baptist Church. He was baptized by his brother Rev Henry EVILSIZOR, who was a minister in the Christian Church. To this church, he proved faithful until death, leaving two aged brothers, Squire and Allen. He departed this life July 25, 1892 aged 84years, 1 months, 15 days. Of this family death has now removed a loving and kind father, mother, and step-mother, 4 brothers and 2 sisters, while 7 brothers and 7 sisters with a large number of grand and great grandchildren. It has been said that Mr EVILSIZOR, was a large portly man with a black beard, who could crack a hickory nut with his teeth at age 80. William Evilsizor, and his two wives are buried in the Nettle Creek Cemetery, Mad River Township, about a mile south of Westville.

The Champaign Democrat, Urbana, Champaign County, Ohio, August 11, 1892
The funeral of Mrs William EVILSIZOR, took place last Sunday at 10 o'clock a.m. at the residence. Rev James Randel conducted the services. He selected his text from psalms 23rd chapter and 4th verse. She was a faithful member of Harmony Baptist Church for a number of years and there will be a missing link in the church. She was always ready to bear her share of the burden of the cross, not only in the church she will be missed but in the neighborhood where she lived. As a neighbor, there was none better. She was ready at all times to lend a helping hand to those in need. In the family circle her kind voice will no longer be heard. For several months she has been gradually sinking away with that fatal disease, consumption; her courage never failing her. Physically, she was growing weaker from day to day; spiritually growing stronger. Our loss will be her gain. Julia Lee was born in Campaign County March 31st, 1843; married to William EVILSIZOR, October 31st, 1861; died August 4th, 1892, aged 49years, 4months and 4 days. She was the mother of eleven children, five of whom have preceded her to the better world. She leaves a bereaved husband, five sons, one daughter, and four grandchildren and a host of friends to mourn her loss. The remains were deposited in the Nettle Creek Cemetery

James Dye was born Jan 12, 1831 at Elizabeth, Miami Co, Ohio, and died April 13, 1899 at Central City, Neb, aged 68 years, 3 months , 1 day. He was married march 11, 1855 to Mary Ann Evensizer at Tory, Ohio and lived close to that place until 1880 when they removed to near Chapman Neb., and have since resided in this county. Nine children were born to them, seven of whom survive, all living in this county excepting one daughter in Ohio. One boy, Joseph H is buried in Ohio and the other, George is buried in the cemetery in Chapman Mr Dye enlisted on the 14th day of October, 1861 at Troy, Ohio and served in Company H of the 44th Ohio infantry until his discharge about June 20,1863 on account of disabilities incurred in the service of his country. On the 24th day of June, 1881, his left leg was amputated above the knee since which time he has been a constant sufferer from severe pains in that member and other ills incident to his army life. He has been bedfast the greater part of the time for the past eighteen years, only once in while being able to sit up in a chair. He has long been remarkably patient all through his long and severe sufferings. One brother, Mr Benjamin Dye of Grand Island, and one sister, Mrs Sarah Gilbert of Alliance are all who are left of a family of eight.

Champaign Democrat, August 17, 1899..
Tremont City, Rev Evilsizor held religious services at the home of Esq Evilsizor, who is seriously sick, Monday evening."

From Champaign Democrat Obituary, August 31, 1899
The funeral of Esquire EVILSIZOR, was largely attended Friday which was held at Nettle Creek Church near Westville. He was a son of Major Henry EVILSIZOR,, a soldier of the war of 1812, was born in Page County, Va. while his father was in the service of his country on the 10th day of May, 1812, and died at Tremont City on the 23rd day of August, 1899, aged 87 years, 3 months and 13 days. He came with his parents from Virginia in 1815 when but 3 years of age, and settled with them in Mad River Township Champaign County on the David Pence farm within a mile east of Nettle Creek Church. The church was not even located, nor probably thought of, as about where it now stands there were camped in large numbers the red men of the forest, with the smaller ones of whom he many times played in his boyhood days as was it his pleasure to often relate. How changed the scene, so much so that we can scarcely realize the fact.

He was married to Miss Christine Comer in 1832, when but 20 years of age, with whom he lived happily until eight years ago, when she departed this life. From this union sprung 11 children, 46 sons and 5 daughters, of whom 10 still survive him, as well as 56 grandchildren and 27 great-grand-children.

The most of his life was spent in Champaign County, but the last few years he has lived in Tremont City. He was one of those sturdy pioneers of the Mad River Valley, who has done his full share of clearing away the mighty forest and preparing the soil to support the great population that has since and is now living therefrom. He has always enjoyed the respect and confidence of his neighbors wherever he lived. He and his wife joined the Hickory Grove Church known as a Baptist congregation near Urbana. They both lived quiet and exemplary lives and none who know them doubt not that they have gone to that happy rest prepared by Christ for his redeemed.

Courier-Merrick County Nebraska, Thursday, march 28, 1901
Stephen L Wiser died Tuesday night, March 26, at his home in Prairie Creek township. When this announcement reached the city yesterday it caused expressions of sorrow on every hand. His health had been bad for some time but it was not generally known that his condition was so critical. A week ago last Saturday he was in the city, just recovering from a severe attack of the grippe, and seemed to have taken cold on the trip, as he was taken down again and continued to grow worse until the end. At his age, in the 60's, he was unable to withstand the relapse. Mr Wiser was one of the pioneers who helped to open up and improve Merrick County. He settled here about thirty years ago and has since been continually identified with the county as one of its most progressive and public spirited farmers. For many years he was president of the Merrick County agricultural Society and has held many other positions of trust, in all of which he acquitted himself as an upright and honorable man, and leaves behind him an enviable reputation for honor and integrity. In all respects, Mr Wiser was a good citizen and his death is a distinctive loss to the community. He was a member of the G A R and also a mason of long standing. The funeral will occur tomorrow (Friday) from his late home in Prairie Creek township, at 10 o'clock A.M. after which the procession will proceed to the county cemetery, near the city, where the burial ceremonies will take place.

Mother, dear mother, we miss thee at home.
Thou has left us so sudden and forlorn.
Such grief and such sorrow is hard to be borne;
Mother, dear mother, O,where art thou gone?
Gone from your home of earthly clay
Gone to your home of endless day
Gone to your home where angels dwell
No sound disturbs, no chiming bell
Awakes again the slumbering form
But as the sunlight gilds the mourn
Will your voice resound through Heaven's dome,
to where the Angels dwell, your home.
We'll come to your home, tis bright and fair;
we know you'll welcome us from a world of care.
With arms outstretched in tones of love
To the angels home in realms above
We'll join your band, with father and mother,
In your home of rest, the angels home

Going To His Room He Removes His Coat and Vest, Writes A Farewell to Fond Parents and Drinks A Deadly Drug- A Sad Ending of a Bright Young Life
"Dear Father and Mother; I have decided not to trouble you any more. My trouble is a love affair. I thank you for the kindness you have shown me. If you ever meet Winnie Whapham treat her like you would me...Goodbye, Frank"

"PS- Write Winnie at Doylestown and send her money if she will come to meet me"

Lying cold and stiff in the sleep which knows no awakening, Frank D Evilsizer, 18 year old son of C W Evilsizer of 77 North Plum street, was found on his bed last evening at 5 O'clock by his mother. An empty carbolic acid bottle on the stand told the story. Without making an investigation the grief-stricken mother rushed down stairs, out of the house, and called Dr Carl Ultes, who resides in the north side of the same house. She did not wait to knock at the door, but rushed in crying out for the doctor to come as she thought her boy was dead. With all possible haste, Dr Ultes gathered up his medicine case and followed the woman.
                                                                          Beyond Assistance
One Glance told the physician that the victim was beyond all earthly assistance. He made a hurried examination and announced that the boy had breathed his last. Coroner J D Thomas was immediately notified and was not long in arriving. A close examination revealed the fact that the boy had drained the contents of the 8oz bottle of carbolic acid. The body was found lying on the bed in his room. The bed covering was not the least bit mussed nor was there any signs that the victim had suffered to any great extent. On the stand in the room stood the fatal vial and a glass. From all appearances the deadly poison was first poured into the glass and somewhat diluted with water before it was sent on its errand. Before preparing his dose, the lad disfigured the label on the bottle to such an extent that it was impossible to ascertain where the drug had been purchased. The only words left on the bottle were "Carbolic acid, poison". As there was no evidence in the room that any of the liquid had been poured away it is the general belief that the boy swallowed the entire contents of the bottle. Dr Thomas stated last evening that it is in his opinion that the acid was not diluted to a very great extent as it was very plainly crystallized in the bottom of the glass. The note which was left for the mother and father was under the bottle. It was written on the back of an old business letter. The writing was very regular and did not appear as though the writer was very greatly agitated before writing it. The wording of the letter gives out the impression that the author was deeply infatuated with the girl whom he mentions. The deceased did not mention that he had been jilted, but from his rash act it might be inferred that this was the direct cause which prompted him to commit suicide. Everything in the chamber of death was in perfect order. Nothing had been disturbed by the boy. He had thrown his coat and hat on a chair in the room. Presumably this was done before he swallowed the drug. The action of the boy while in the room can only be presumed as there was not another person in the house at the time the deed was committed.
                                                                     Parents Were Away
Mr and Mrs Evilsizer had just returned from Thackery, where they had spent Sunday with Mrs Evilsizer's parents. They had driven to Thackery and while Mr Evilsizer was putting the horse in the barn, his wife, accompanied by her 8 year old son, entered the house, finding everything still and desolate , and thinking that Frank should have been there to greet them, she stepped to the stair door and called to him. Receiving no response, but never thinking of the horrible sight to meet her gaze, she rushed upstairs and into her son's room. Here she found him cold in death. Mr and Mrs Evilsizer left Saturday afternoon about 2 O'clock for Thackery, leaving Frank at home to take care of the house. Mr Evilsizer stated last evening that when he left his son, he seemed to be feeling all right and that he bade him goodbye." Frank has always been a good boy. All he cared to do was work, and wanted to work all the time. He never seemed to have a desire to associate with young people. He has always worked with me at the factory and during all that time I never noticed anything which would make me think he would do such a thing. I never knew of his being infatuated with any girl. I never had the slightest idea of such a thing." Charles Hutchins, residing just south of the Evilsizer home stated last evening that he saw the boy when he entered the house yesterday afternoon a few minutes before 4 O'clock. He said he noticed something strange in his actions, but never dreamed of what was going to happen. He said as the boy reached the gate, he stopped and looked into the house. After standing thus for a few seconds, he went in. After that, Mr Hutchins said he did not hear a sound until he was notified of what had occurred. Just what time the drug was swallowed is not known, but according to the statement of Mr Hutchins, the boy probably took the poison immediately after entering the house. The dead boy was found at 5 o'clock by the mother. According to these statements the boy must have died about 20 minutes after taking the poison. The body was not yet cold when the coroner arrived.

Who The Girl Is

Winnie Whapham whom the deceased named in his note, is a young girl who was employed at the K of P Home until about two months ago. At that time she resigned her position at the home and went to Doylestown. For about five years previous to her being employed as a waitress, she was a resident of the home. Mrs R M LeFever, matron at the home, stated last evening that Evilsizer had called at the home on several different occasions to see Miss Whapham. She said she did not know of any trouble existing between the young couple. Mrs LeFever stated that she always knew the girl to be good, honest, and faithful in everything. She said she was a good worker and never shirked her duties. When the girl left the home she gave no reason for her doing so. Since her departure from the city, it is said, young Evilsizer has seemed down-hearted and dejected. He did not seem at all like himself. All he thought about was his work. C W Evilsizer, with his son Frank, were the proprietors of the Springfield Rug Factory at 252 West Main Street. Mr Evilsizer has conducted that business for the past seven years and has built up a large business. The son was first taken into the business about two years ago when he stopped school to go in with his father. Mr Evilsizer stated that evening that during the time he and his son have conducted the business they have never had any trouble and everything seemed to be moving along in perfect harmony. The deceased was a member of the Helping Hand council, Junior OUAM and was very prominent in the work of the order. He was a willing worker and was ready at all times to do anything for the good of the order. He took a prominent part in everything pertaining to the order and his loss is keenly felt.

He was afflicted when a small boy, and never afterward saw a well day, but was ever cheerful and constantly looked on the bright side of life. The past is naught but memory
With vivid brush we recall it;
The future is not but fond hope
With eager breath we forestall it.
The present only is a flash
It passes ere the thunders crash;
Such then is life and that's in it
A hope, a memory and a minute.

Central City Courier December, 1913 Central City Nebraska
Pioneer Resident of Chapman passes away
Benjamin Dye was born July 28, 1833 in Miami County, Ohio which was his boyhood home. On Dec 19, 1853 he was united in marriage to Miss Elizabeth McKee of Miami County. To this union, four children were born, only one, a son, reaching maturity. Upon the breaking out of the civil war, Mr Dye answered his country's call for volunteers and enlisted in the forty-fourth infantry, Ohio Volunteers, serving throughout the entire four years of the war. In 1874 he moved with his family to Chapman, Merrick County, Nebraska, being one of the early residents of this place. He homesteaded on section 34-13-8 and maintained his home there till old age compelled him to retire from the farm. During the early history of this community, Mr and Mrs Dye were prominent figures, each doing all they could developing a new and practically barren country. One of the first self binders introduced in his community was owned by Mr Dye and many of the old settlers can testify to his ability in handling what was then a very cumbersome piece of machinery. After leaving the farm Mrs Dye passed away and Mr Dye spent his time in different parts of Ohio, North Dakota and Nebraska. Of late years he has made his home with his niece,
Mrs C J Hutchinson of Coleridge, Neb. It was at this place that he quietly passed into the great beyond, on Saturday, December 27, 1913 at an age of 80 years, 5 months and 29 days. He had not been ill and the end came peacefully as does the close of the day to a tired child. The Infinite maker of all infinite things and beings had beckoned to the veteran who had so faithfully and bravely breasted the storms of life and had usured him into a world of eternal peace. The remains were brought to Chapman, arriving here Monday evening. The funeral services were held from the Baptist church Tuesday afternoon, Rev Edmund Brown being in charge. Interment was made in the family plot in the Chapman Cemetery. With the exception of one sister, Mrs Sarah Gilbert, his entire immediate family had preceded him in death, but he leaves a host of relatives and friends who sadly mourn his loss

Urbana Daily Democrat, Tuesday, August 31, 1915
DEATH RESULTS FROM SHOCK
Russell Evilsizor dies from abdominal injuries
FALLS FROM MANURE SPREADER
Young man lives just nine hours after being run over by heavy wagon in the afternoon.
Russell  EVILSIZOR, 21, son of Mr and Mrs Charles EVILSIZOR, residing southeast of Urbana, passed away at his home Tuesday morning about 2:30 as the result of injuries received in a fall from a manure spreader about 3:00 in the afternoon. Death was due to a chock and internal injuries received when the back wheel of the wagon passed over him.

Evilsizor was in the act of going into a field at the farm with the spreader full, when in reaching over to urge one of the horses on the team, he lost his balance. It is thought that he fell on his right shoulder, as a bruise at that place would indicate. The wheel of the wagon passed over his abdomen and on the left hip, where the wheel evidently struck him, a skinned place is noticeable and besides that only a slightly colored line over the abdomen is evident.

Dr D C Houser was called and he administered every aid possible to relieve his intense suffering but to no avail. A second trip was made to his bedside by the doctor about 7 o'clock Monday evening and his pulse, which was normal on his first visit had raised to 125. Upon his last visit to the home about 12 o'clock, no pulse was evident at his wrist whatsoever, and then it was realized that his end was very near. Dr. Houser remained on this last visit until the young man's death at 2:30 o'clock.

The exact cause of his death can not be ascertained although it may have been caused by the shock of the fall.

The young man was exceptional in his character and had always taken an interest in farm work. His loss is keenly felt by his bereaved parents. He was of clean-cut character and had no bad habits of any kind. Besides his parents, a younger brother, Luther, and two grandfathers, Rev Isaac EVILSIZOR, of Gallipolls, and James Edmondson of Terra Haute are left to mourn his death.

Funeral services will be held from the home Thursday afternoon at two o'clock. Rev F G Arnold pastor of the First Baptist Church will officiate. Interment will be made in Oak Dale Cemetery

Killed By UP Train At Boyero
Railroad Tragedy Snuffed Life of J H Evilsizer, Prominent Lincoln County Rancher-Shock To The Community.
John Harrison Evilsizer, a prominent stockman, who resided in the Rush Creek Community, was killed last Saturday morning at the Boyero Crossing by Union Pacific....... Mr Evilsizer was making a trip to Boyero in his car and while crossing the railroad was struck by the train and sustained fatal injuries. On account of the view of the approaching train being obstructed by box cars at the stockyards to the east of the crossing, Mr Evilsizer, not noticing the passenger, drove up on to the tracks. Eyewitnesses to the terrible tragedy were Alfred Fryer and Jim Sweeney, The train was traveling at a rate of 45 miles an hour and it is presumed that Mr Evilsizer, seeing the approaching train and fearing that he would not make it across started to get out of the car when the crash came. The machine was smashed to winding and scattered along the road for several hundred feet. Mr Evilsizer was catapulted from the machine and hurled about fifteen feet in the air and thrown about 100 feet to the right of way close to the railroad station. The train was in charge of Engineer Clem Meyers and Fireman H Abernathy, who noticed the car on the track about 100 feet east of the crossing. Although running at a rate up to 45 miles an hour, engineer Meyers halted the train within its length, the last coach being on the crossing when it came to a standstill. The body of the unfortunate man was picked up and ugly gashes about the head...and thought there was little hope. He was placed aboard the train and accompanied by David Hammond and Harry Davis and was brought to Hugo. About four miles out of Boyero, Mr Evilsizer expired without regaining consciousness. ON the arrival of the train at the Hugo station the body was removed and taken in charge by the May Mortuary. Coroner Dr Lloyd summoned a jury who examined the body and an inquest was held Monday morning at the courthouse. A half dozen witnesses testified at the inquest, including Engineer Meyers and Fireman Abernathy, eye witnesses and several others. The men in charge of the train testified that the car was standing still on the track when the accident occurred although eye witnesses who were close by, state the car was moving at the time. The evidence brought out the fact that the crossing at this point is in very poor condition and it is not kept up. Going on to the main line from the south there are two tracks to cross over, the house track and the side track and both crossings are very rough. To the east a stock yard and the fact that there were several box cars standing on the siding, obstructs the view of a west-bound train. The jury composed of County Clerk Fred C Kenoga (former county coroner) as foreman and Messrs T G Watson, I R Swennes, A H Reid, Hank Hanson and W K Fortune after hearing the testimony of the several witnesses returned the following verdict: That John Harrison Evilsizer, came to his death by being struck by the U P Train No 119 on the public crossing in the town of Boyero, on Saturday, March 19, 1921. "We further find that from the evidence submitted in the testimony that had this crossing been properly maintained by the railroad company this accident might have been avoided.".

John Harrison Evilsizer was born at Millville, MO on January 11, 1861. He spent his boyhood with his parents and was married to Estelle Cummings in Ray County Mo in 1881, where he resided until 1885, then moving to Severy, Greenwood County Kansas. In 1889 he went to Oklahoma and attended the opening of the first land script. While there he was appointed a United States Marshall. In 1890 he moved with his family to Kansas City, Mo where he engaged in the moving and transfer business. IN 1902 he moved to Johnson City Kansas where he resided for eight years. In 1910 he came to Colorado and on February of that year filed on the north half of section 12, township 15, range 54 at the United States Land Office in Hugo. Several months later he established residence on the place and has lived there until his death. He acquired a couple of sections of land and carried on stock raising and hog raising business for a number of years along with his sons, Roy and Victor. The cattle and hogs shipped by the Evilsizers to the Denver and Kansas City markets have at times topped the markets of the day. In June 1914 Mr Evilsizer was married to Ivy Chloe Page, to which union one child was born, William Hoye. The other surviving children are Mrs Edgar Burke of Kansas City MO, Thomas Sinclair, engaged in the auto truck business at Kansas City; and Roy and Vic of Rush Creek who are stock farmers. Besides the widow, two sisters also survive, Mrs Henry Turner and Mrs Richard Gibson. Mr Evilsizer took a great interest in horses and in his days owned some speedster. During his residence in Kansas he took pride in being the possessor of the Kansas Champion. After coming to Lincoln County he identified himself with the fair meetings and his robust figure, conspicuous at the annual meetings will be missed. Mr Evilsizer was superintendent of the racing program and always took keen interest in this matter. In politics he was a staunch Republican but never aspired to office although he served as Justice of the Peace in his district for a number of years. The board of county commissioners at a recent session named him as road overseer of his district and on the morning of the tragedy which snuffed out his life, he was on the road to Boyero to get a slip for road work. The sickening news of the death of Mr Evilsizer cast a gloom over the entire community. He was devoted to his family, loyal and enthusiastic about every cause which he believed in and was a fluent and inspiring conversationalist. He will be greatly missed in the community life of this section where his presence was an inspiration to many and the sorrow of the sudden and unexpected calling away is universal among our people. Mr Evilsizer was a good honest and industrious man, friendly and accommodating to his neighbors and kind and considerate. The writer was acquainted with Mr Evilsizer for several years and he was always right in anything for the public good. He loved his home and was a model husband as affectionate and tender father to his children, and he leaves an honored name as a heritage to them.. The sympathy of the entire community goes out to the bereaved widow, the four children, two sisters and the other relatives in their time of sorrow. "Death thou art infinite, tis life is little" The funeral services were conducted at the Methodist church yesterday afternoon at two o'clock and were in charge of Rev J H Sutton, of the Latter Day Saints, assisted by Rev M B Beattloe, pastor of the Methodist church. Rev Sutton who was intimately acquainted with Mr Evilsizer delivered the funeral sermon and paid a fitting tribute to the deceased. His discourse was taken from ten verses of the fifth chapter of Pauls second epistle to the Corinthians. A song was rendered by Mssrs Claud Wilson and Alva Bacher. Mrs A H Reid and Miss Olga Larson. Many beautiful wreaths and flowers adorned the casket. The active pallbearers were Clinton Zimmerman, Mike Monahan, W I Cooper, William F Hoppen, Sol Smith and Clayton Gross and the honorary members Ed Wooldridge, Bert Cook, Harry Hayward, C M Miles, Charles Emerson and P O Hedlund. Burial followed in the Evergreen cemetery directed by the May Mortuary. Words fail to express the mourning of the community in the loss of Mr Evilsizer, one of Lincoln County's most prominent citizens and in the grief that has suddenly befallen the stricken family, we with the multitude convey to them our most heartfelt sympathies.

Nashville Journal October 26, 1922
Henry Evilsizer, an employee of the Nashville Mining Company, died suddenly Saturday night at his home near Oakdale, at the age of 64 years.

Dr. S P Schroeder conducted the coroner's inquest at the family residence Sunday and summoned the following jury: Reinholdt Kroener, foreman, P J May, Charles Petrashek, J I Fleschute, Clyde Dahncke and Charlie Dintleman. They found that he came to his death by heart disease during the night from October 21 to 22." At the inquest, Mrs Evilsizer testified that her husband had been complaining about his leg a great deal since he was hurt September 3, 1921. Last winter this limb broke open three times but had lately healed over. She said he complained of headaches a good deal the last year....Although he worked hard at tasks, he did not have the strength he formerly had. Walter Evilsizer of Nashville testified that he was a nephew of the deceased and that Mr Evilsizer had come to his house last Monday evening to board with him and that he worked at the mine the entire day. Saturday he complained of a bad cold and in the evening had a tight feeling across his breast. After eating a hearty supper, Walter Evilsizer suggested that his uncle wait until morning before going to his home near Oakdale, since he was not feeling well, but the older man insisted that he wanted to go home immediately so they set out in Walter's car, arriving at their destination about 7:30. While at his home he was cheerful, played the violin and retired at about 10:00 p.m. Sunday morning the family got up late and a little before 9 his son Hiram called him to breakfast, and receiving no response, went to his room and found him dead. Hiram Evilsizer corroborated his cousin's testimony. Henry A Evilsizer was born at Waterloo in 1859 as the youngest son of Elliott and Polly Evilsizer and died October 22, aged 62 years, 10 months and 17 days. He was united in marriage with Kate Whittenburg in 1882. To this union 11 children were born, 3 of whom, Mrs. Gertrude Corden, Mrs. Catherine Mitchell and Warren, preceded him in death.                                                               BOY DROWNS IN MUZZY LAKE
Loren EVILSIZOR, 16, Is Tragedy Victim at Swimming Resort...Youth and companion had entered pool after closing hours; Body under water 30 minutes before recovered by firemen...

Urbana, May 29- A stolen swim in the unguarded waters of Muzzy Lake, near here, after the resort had closed for the night, brought death by drowning Saturday to 16 year old Loren Evilsizor of 222 Freeman St, Urbana.

The youth was under water for more than half an hour before his body was recovered by Urbana firemen using grappling hooks. The drowning occurred about 7:30 P.M.

According to the accounts of the tragedy related to Coroner Richard M Brand, Evilsizor and a companion, 15 year old Nelson Page came to the former stone quarry pool, at the Edge of the city, at dusk, and asked Arnold Crowl, resort manager, to permit them to swim. Crowl told investigating authorities that he had just closed the lake bathhouse for the evening and that he refused the youths the requested permission. However, Crowl said, the pair apparently managed to gain entrance to the bathhouse, changed into swimming suits and plunged into the lake. He said he first became aware that the boys were in swimming when he heard Page crying for help for his friend. He and Richard Shallabarger, a friend, rowed to the drowning boy's rescue, in a boat at the shoreline. The dived futilely for the body for approximately 20 minutes, he said before notifying the Urbana Fire Dept. Page, the victim's companion, recited that he and Evilsizor entered the lake and swam toward a raft, moored off shore. He reached the raft first, he said, and upon turning about saw his friend "puffing and blowing" in the water behind him.

His cries of alarm brought the two men who were talking nearby. Members of the Fire Dept rescue crew attempted artificial respiration methods for 15 or 20 minuets after recovery of the body. Evilsizor was the son of Mr and Mrs. Jesse EVILSIZOR. Coroner Brand, after questioning witnesses, returned a verdict of accidental death. The youths body was taken to the Gardner and Seaver Funeral Home.

Urbana Daily Citizen June 1, 1937
The swimming victim was Loren EVILSIZOR,16, son of Mrs and Mrs Jesse EVILSIZOR, 222 Freeman Ave, Urbana, who drowned in Muzzy Lake, west of town, late Saturday after cramping in the water. The Urbana Fire Dept first aid squad answered a delayed call to the lake. The firemen recovered the body with grappling hooks and attempted artificial respiration but the boy was beyond aid....Firemen said the section of the lake where the body was recovered was 32 feet deep...because there was no telephone at the place, it was about 20 minutes before the fire Dept could be called...Funeral services are set for Tuesday at 2:00 P.M. He leaves his parents, two sisters and two brothers.
