Estate Settlement of Thomas West Feb., 1814, Champaign Co., OH
Appraisal of estate A-465
Most items were for wearing apparel and ordinary household goods. Thomas had 8 bee hives, a lot of peach trees, 14 hogs, hemp seed, and one important item.....uone town lot N 106 worth $75.00./u Pat Stickley could not locate record of the town lot 106.
The following persons made purchases at the Estate Sale which took place 18 Feb., 1814:
Fords: Thomas, a silver watch. John 2 handkerchiefs, a rifle, and shot pouch. Tolson, some fat, and importantly something that MIGHT say Bible. Looks like Bbl for 12 1/2 cents.
uWidow FORD, one lot. Looks like $106.00./u Looks like this Ford widow bought the town lot mentioned above. She is probably Blanche West Ford, mother of Sarah Jane Ford who m. James Ashing. Blanche was probably a sister of Thomas West, deceased. "Widow Ford" also made other small purchases.
Francis Stevenson: 2 razors; looks like one shoe hammer, and two bee hives. )This is no doubt Francis Stevenson who m. Mary FORD.)
Sarah Ashing (spelled Ashen here),bought one bandanna handkerchief for $1.13
Others making purchases at the estate sale who I recognize to some degree: Samuel Logan, Alexander DOKE, Jacob Pence, Abraham Powell, Joseph Pence, Samuel Powell.
Others: James Robeson, Samuel Hitt, Daniel Largent, William Rhoads, Bacon, L. Neil, , Samuel Gibbs, John McCord. I know the names Hitt, Largent, and McCord from Ward study, but cannot place any of them in any of my families at this time.
Final Account for estate of Thomas West:
Estate Sale brought $210.44
Pork belonging to estate $20.00
ONE MONTH SERVICE "IN MILITIA", $7.00
Total of $237.44
In addition, JAMES ASHEN gave the estate $232.17, after receiving $41.41.
Money was paid out to the following persons:
John Alexander, Attorney; Bennett Taber; BLANCHE FORD; Thomas (looks like Gash....wonder if it could be Thomas G. Ash(en)?); Henry Bacon Attorney; John Wallace, Sheriff; Abraham Powell, Allen M. (looks like Poff), TOLSON FORD, Abraham Powell, Jacob Pentz, John Wiley, Jesse Johnson, William Stevens Esq; and James Ashen a above.
There is an item of $12. pd in court suit in case of SNELL. I have shared info on that before. In the suit the probable sisters of Thomas West are named: Blanche Ford, Mary Noble wife of James, and Susannah Conner. Tolson Ford represented Thomas West in the suit, but confusion here in that in earlier information in regard to this suit, it said that Thomas West was of KY. We know he had land in Champaign Co., and now we know that he d. in Champ. Co. in 1814. So perhaps it just meant that he was FROM Kentucky. In fact, we do have document where officials in Mason Co., KY verified that at the time of the estate settlement in OH, Thomas West owned no property in Mason Co., KY.
One more entry which I cannot make out, but which could be significant says "Cost of letter and a suit that was ? (looks like cutiud), recording $7.00 out, but apparently $19. credited also

Tolson Ford, Blanche Ford, Susanna Conner, James and Mary Noble
vs
Henry Snell, John Snell and Abraham Powell
Tolson Ford is the Administrator of Thomas West of Kentucky; Blanche Ford, Susanna Conner and Mary Noble are sisters and only heirs of Thomas West. In 1809 or 1810 Thomas West held the north-west quarter of Section 28 T wp 5 Range 11 (Urbana) by a certificate from the Cincinnati Land Office. Thomas West had paid 1/4 of the purchase price and pledged the same to a He nry Snell of Warren County as a security of about $20 for which Snell
had lent to West. West, being illiterate, did not know that he had "assigne d" the land to Snell when he put his mark on the paper. The complainants charge that Snell intended to obtain the whole quarter of the land of $2 0. Henry Snell has since conveyed the land to his son, John Snell of Warren County. Henry Snell claims that he gave $80 to West and denies that t he land was ever as a security. The court ordered that the case be dismiss ed at the costs of the complainants.
In regard to the estate settlement of Thomas West, spoken of above, we see several entries mentioning "widow Ford" and Blanche Ford. Documents available. Before the estate of Thomas West could be settled, a letter was secured from Mason Co., KY stating that he had no land there. (have copy of document.)
Cheryl Haas sent for a copy of the entire very lengthy suit spoken of in the transcription above. In the following paragraph from the total suit, we learn the all important family relationship. PRIOR TO THE FOLLOWING, THE PHRASE ABOVE "SISTERS AND ONLY HEIRS" made us realize that the women were sisters of each other, but were unsure of their relationship to Thomas:
. "Snell saith that he does not know that the said West resided on the said land but a very short time he understood that said West was part of the time with his daughter Blanche Ford who resided in the said land and that he resided near the said land until his death as he was informed and believes."

William Ward of the County of Champaign of the one part and Blanche Ford (ASIGNEE OF WILLIAM CHAPMAN) (all caps AF) of the County and State aforesaid of the other part. .....consideration of the sum of fifty dollars in hand paid by the said WILLIAM CHAPMAN afsd. As aforesd. to the said Wm. Ward before the sealing and delivering of these presents......to the said Blanch Ford.....in lot no. one hundred and seventy-two in the town of Urbana.....Alexander McComsey was a witness, along with John L. Meridith, JP. Received and recorded 20 Aug. 1820.
[35598]
Blanche sold her lot in Urbana 9 August 1834 to Thomas Humphries. This was for deed M432 for the lot that she had purchased in 1820. Blanche would have been 81 years of age in 1834. We note here that in the 1840 household of Joseph Ford and his wife Catherine Snell there was a female of age 70-80. Since Blanche would have been about 87 in 1840, we cannot be positive that the female age 70-80 in 1840 was our Blanche West Ford. Certainly we cannot trust the census records for perfection. Just an observation and wonderment. It appears that Blanche was selling her LOT. Nothing is said about a house on the lot that I know of. John G. Ford witnessed the sale in 1834.
