THANKS TO YOU- OUR WEBSITE IS UP ON TOP
We recently checked out our
favorite search engines,
Google, Alta Vista, Teoma, and Yahoo. An entry of "Eversole" found our EVersole
/ EBersole webpage in the top 10 on all four. Ego satisfaction aside,
this means that our efforts are proving interesting to those seeking
information on their EV/EB family history. It is also proving to be of great
value in locating EV/EB Family Treasures. The next two articles
about recent contributions to the E162 Archives describe outstanding examples of this
benefit.
ORIGINAL 1894 DIARIES AND AN EBERSOLE MEMORIAL GIVEN
TO ARCHIVES
The original diary of David Calvin Ebersole (#3631) describing his trip from Sioux City Iowa
to Alberta,
Canada to homestead land in 1894, and his 3 month journey back back to Iowa (See more
about this below.) has been
contributed by Jean Morris of Ormond Beach FL. It along with another diary of David's and
a museum quality copy of the orignal Ebersole genealogy, AN EBERSOLE MEMORIAL
, published in 1879 by Amos
Ebersol who was the grandfather of the Reverend Charles E Ebersole of Ebersol
Families in America -1727-1937 fame are now
preserved in the E162 Archives. Other treasures included were vital records, original Bible
Pages entries for vital records, correspondence and transcriptions of most of the diary pages.
These items were among the Ebersole Treasures that Jean
received when Opal Florence(Ebersole) Fewlass (#3646), David's daughter and a close
friend of Jean's
mother, Mrs. Marjorie Stiles MacCollum, died without issue in 1996.
We are indebted to Jean for preserving these Treasures and for seeking us out to continue their preservation.
ANOTHER FASCINATING SOURCE DOCUMENT
Thanks to the kindness and generosity of Donnie Ebersole we now have a
transcription of a newsletter/book put out by one of the organizers of an Ebersole
reunion held around 1940 in Sterling IL. Over 190 new individuals have been
added to the E162 Database as a result of this contribution.

DAVID CALVIN EBERSOLE DIARY OF 1894
On the 13th of May, 1894 David Calvin Ebersole (#3631) takes leave of his wife, Ada (#3643) and two
children. He sets out from Sioux City, Iowa, joins up with 2 other men, and travels by horse drawn wagons to
the middle of Alberta, Canada intending to buy land there and farm it. Arriving in late June the trio
spent a couple of weeks checking out specific locations and more time building brush fences and
proving up the land they purchased. By the end of July David decides to go back to Iowa and leaves
alone for the long haul back. The trip up and the odyssey back ending at 1:30 AM on 19 Oct 1894 were
documented by David with daily entries in a remarkably fascinating diary (Only 9 days are missing
from the documents). 105 years later, the last of his children still living, Opal (Ebersole) Fewlass
(#3646), dies without issue at age 103 and the daughter of her close friend Marjorie MacCollum, Jean Morris,
becomes the recipient of the original diaries and a partial transcription possibly made by Opal at some
time. A family historian herself, Jean searches the Internet for Ebersole and finds our website, She
contacts us and asks if we would be interested in the documents. Thank you Jean!! Now copied and
stored in the E162 Archives the diaries will be reprinted in this and upcoming E162 Newsletters for our readers to
enjoy.
The diary is being reproduced here for several reasons:
I know you will be fascinated by David’s day to day descriptions of what were ordinary
daily activities 100 years ago.
It provides an extraordinary look into the life of one of our ancestors and his family.
It shows me, at least, how fortunate we are to be living now rather than in "the good ole days".
It meets part of our goal to make EV/EB treasures more accessible to those interested in their
family history.
It is hoped that some other descendants of Cornelius M. Ebersole (#1614) will be found and be
able to fill in more of this family's intriguing history. In particular we would like to know more about
David's return to the same area, near Red Deer, Alberta, Canada with his family and where Opal
apparently lived from around 1897 till 1911.
But more importantly, I hope this diary will inspire you to renew your efforts
to record your own current activities, even if you only enter a few words each entry. What you are
doing now will be anything but ordinary to your
great
grandchildren 100 years from now. It may be a better or worse world then, but one thing is certain –
It will be different! And some of your decendants will be extremely thankful that one of their
G-Grandparents recorded what it was like in the good old days of circa 2000 A.D.
The diary transcription can be found on a separate page entitled David Ebersole Diary.
WORLDCONNECT vs AWT vs ANCESTRY.COM SEARCH
These are all entries to
the SAME public database. What used to be the Rootsweb WorldConnect
database has been combined with Ancestry's World Tree. It is still
free.
