WELCOME ABOARD GGGGG???GG ANCESTORS
Some time ago I received a very nice email from Dennis Buerge requesting that relatives using the spelling AEBERSOLD should be included in our Database. I replied that we try to include every spelling variation we encounter including Aebersold but that we had very few with that spelling to date even though it may have been one of the earliest versions of the name. What escaped me then, and what might be of interest and of value to others, is the fact that this spelling of the name has a different Soundex code. Its code is A162 since the initial vowel is an "A". We are not thinking about changing the name of the project but it is intriguing to think that our earliest ancestors would most likely have belonged to an A162 Project if there had been one then. In any case relatives of any spelling are always welcome!

If you are interested specifically in AEBERSOLD surnames be sure to contact Dennis at ([email protected]). See SPAMSTOPPERS article below.

The current list of locations of people with copies of the EBERSOL FAMILIES IN AMERICA book can be found on our Useful Links Page.

FASCINATING SOURCE DOCUMENT
Thanks to the kindness and generosity of Janice Amstutz and her family, we now have a xerox-copy of one of the sources the Reverend Ebersole apparently drew upon in preparing his book. On May 28, 1904, at the 2nd Annual John and William Eversole's Reunion held at G. C. Lichtenwalter's farm, A. R. Eversole (#2109) read an Eversole History that he had written. A.R (#2109) was Janice's GG Grandfather. The entries in the Rev E's book on pp 119-121 appear to have been obtained from A.R.'s paper.

GREAT EVERSOLE HISTORICAL WEBSITE
Be sure to visit http://hazardkentucky.com/2000/oldest_cabin.htm This website has some terrific pictures of the Oldest Structure in Perry County, Kentucky: The Eversole Cabin. Built around 1800 by Jacob (#156) and Mary (#363) Eversole, this is one of our oldest artifacts. Our enthusiastic thanks go to Judge Denny Ray Noble and his family for preserving it, and for creating this website for us to enjoy. You will be intrigued by the extensive comments that are posted on the website.

DATABASE STATUS
Over 70 new individuals have been added to the EV/EB portion of the E162 Database since our last report. There are currently 1948 Ebersoles, 2050 Eversoles, 174 Ebersols, 169 Eversulls, 56 Ebersohls, 43 Aebersolds and 2 Ebersolls born with an EV/EB surname in the database plus 1363 females who have married an EV/EB male for a total of 5803 people who have used the EV/EB surname. In addition there are 1250 males who have married EV/EB females for a grand total of 7053 people in the EB/EV portion of the E162 Database.

Of the 5803 EV/EB users, the BMD data for 4479 are currently listed in the WorldConnect public database. The number of EV/EB women with different married names in the public database has not been determined.

SEARCH ENGINES
Dick Eastman, editor of the highly recommended Eastman Newsletter, recently noted that he had found the new Teoma search engine a valuable addition to his research arsenal. While Google is still my first choice, I agree that Teoma and Alta Vista are very valuable additions to one's genealogical clue finding toolbox. It is also personally satisfying that your continuing support brings up our EVERSOLE/EBERSOLE Research site as one of the top 10 on all 3 search engines when our surname is entered.

THE ANCESTRY.COM JUGGERNAUT
You may be dismayed by the commercial aspects of the Ancestry.com expansion in the Genealogy field, but you certainly can't afford to ignore them. They are clearly now the 2nd largest single source of genealogical clues in existence, both free and for sale. It would appear that they have compiled and cross-indexed every scrap of data they have acquired and provided it in a host of new formats. For example, a query about a surname will produce seemingly every message from every board that ever referred to that surname. I certainly have not explored all their offering in depth (not even their free offerings) but three conclusions are obvious: (1) You should explore their offerings (2) you should explore their free offerings first, and (3) it is more complicated now to find the free boards and lists, so make good use of your bookmarks or favorite lists.

WORLDCONNECT vs AWT vs ANCESTRY.COM SEARCH
These are all entries to the SAME public database. What used to be the Rootsweb WorldConnect database has been combined with Ancestry's World Tree. It is still free.

SPAMSTOPPERS
We have started using 2 procedures to make it harder for "Spammers" to harvest email addresses listed in the E162 News. The first procedure is the simplest, but apparently effective. We have attached the characters "E162" to the front of email addresses shown. Thus "jean@ xyz.com" becomes "[email protected]" When you want to use the address to send an email to "jean", copy the address, delete the characters "E162" and just use the rest "[email protected]".

The second procedure involves creating a "GIF"image of the email address. This method was used to generate the E162 address "image"at the end of this Newsletter. It's disadvantage is that the address can't be copied and pasted into a regular email. You have to enter the address from your keyboard.

EV/EB TREASURES
Jackie Gross(#661) has been added to our Register of Custodians of EV/EB Treasures. She has two huge portraits, one of Hiram Snyder Ebersole (#6159), her GG-Grandfather, as a baby, and one of Abraham Pile Ebersole (#6116), her GGG-Grandfather as an adult.

Jackie has also posted transcriptions of 4 Ebersole wills on the PA GenWeb site in the Courthouse records section under Lebanon County.

CONFLICTING CONNECTIONS (CCs)
This is the fourth of a series of articles on people whose family connections are different, depending on which published source is referenced. This time we will discuss some of the conflicting information we have about the person shown as "Mary Ebersole " married to Mr. Snively(# 5200) in our E162 DataBase.

It is obvious that the Mary (Ebersole) who died prior to 1845, cannot be the Mary Ebersole Snively that was alive in 1847 and died in 1865. I think we are safe in assigning Mary Elizabeth(Ebersole) Criss the separate ID of (#9373). However this certainly does not pin down whether or not both are daughters of Elizabeth Etter and John Ebersole (#5166).

My thanks to Jennifer Simpson, Jerry and Gary Linerode, and Craig Davis who have uncovered a host of data about the ubiquitous "Mary" including all of that summarized above. We join them in requesting that anyone who can shed light on Mary's identity should contact us.

The data existing about the principals involved with "Mary", above, have a number of other "CC" that we will point out in a later isue.

If you know of more of these CCs please send us some details; or better yet, send us some evidence that will help resolve the conflicts.

SEARCHERS SALUTE

The above individuals are just a sampling of the many supporters who have provided us with new information on various EV/EB individuals. As we have stated before, these brief acknowledgements do not begin to reflect the value or scope of these contributions. In many cases they are complete family histories replete with memos, sources and background material. Most have many more individuals in them than we add to the E162 archives since they are usually whole family histories and the E162 Project is concerned primarily with individuals that have used the EV/EB surname at some point in time. Thus we both "daughter out" and "grandmother out" in order to keep the database from theoretically including everyone who ever lived. :-)

QUERIES
While we believe the various Boards and Forums (see our Useful Links) are the most useful way to obtain answers to queries we are also happy to post them in the E162 News.

USEFUL LINKS
A number of items appearing in the E162 News are updated periodically. These include items such as the current contents of the E162 Library, New Users Guide, Names and addresses of where major source documents can be obtained, etc. Rather than reprinting the updated items in later issues of the E162 News we will note when they are updated and keep the latest versions of such items on separate pages with links to them appearing on the Useful Links Page.
