E162 Data Base

E162 Data Base

There are 2 databases maintained by the E162 Project - the E162 Database on the E162 Project computer and the Public Database maintained as part of the RootsWeb WorldConnect Project.

E162 Database

The E162 database is essentially an "Index" to all the information we can find on every variation of the surname "Eversole". Since about 90% of all these variations are spelled either EVersole or EBersole we refer to this collection often as the EV/EB database . There are over 6000 individuals with an EV/EB surname in the Database.

The initial source of the data in the database was the monumental work of the Reverend Charles Eliphalet Ebersol. His 1937 publication THE EBERSOL FAMILIES IN AMERICA 1727-1937 contained data on over 2050 individuals who had used our surname in one of its various spellings. We have added to that base almost 4000 more such individuals at this time (Jan 2003). Of even more importance is the addition of over a thousand source citations, including a number of primary and hundreds of secondary source citations. You can see what sources have been archived and used by clicking on E162 Archived Sources.

As examination of the database reveals, most of the data about individuals has no documentary evidence supporting its validity. Having said that, it should be noted that, as such evidence has been found, it almost always supports the claims of the early EV/EB genealogy authors. While it has been common for later authors to emphasize the errors of earlier ones, we have found the actual error rate to be quite small. Considering the technological advances in copying, photography, transportation, communications and computers that have occurred in the last 50 years, we find the quality of the early EV/EB family histories quite remarkable. In most cases they represent models to admire and superb bases to build upon.

Obviously the computer and powerful Genealogy programs such as THE MASTER GENEALOGIST makes it much easier to record, analyze and improve upon existing genealogical data. We see the E162 Database therefore as a tool that will be continually updated. In contrast to printed genealogies, where continuous updating is prohibitively expensive, a computer database is relatively inexpensive to maintain; and access, through the Net, is quite easy???????

In order to be of value as a research tool, the E162 database needs to have as much data in it as possible. Since much of this data is first found in published documents with valid and appropriate copyright protection, most of it is undocumented, and some of it is conflicting, the database cannot be published in any practical sense.

In order to let EV/EB researchers know that there is further data existent without violating copyright laws, misleading readers, perpetuating nonsense, or corking off potentially useful investigations a file containing only BMD data is available online in the public database, edeversole Database.

Public Database

The public database, edeversole Database, is essentially a list of names of all the people with EV/EB surnames (and their spouses) that are in the E162 Database. It contains only BMD (Birth, Marriage, and Death) dates and the unique E162 ID# plus the family relationships of those individuals. Researchers who find names of interest in the WorldConnect database are encouraged to contact the E162 Project Administrator to find out about availability of further information concerning the individuals of interest. Be sure to record the ID#'s of the individuals concerned as there are many individuals with the same given names and surname spellings in the E162 Database.

Data from copyrighted documents always has the source noted in its citation when information from the database is furnished.

There are currently over 6000 individuals with EV/EB surnames plus over 1200 male spouses listed in either database.

Two items appearing in the public database need clarification. First is the notation "Event: Conflict". This signifies that the E162 Database contains one or more conflicting pieces of data about relationships or vital data. This situation is, unfortunately, more common the further back our tree(s) are traced. The public database reflects the current E162 Project assumptions connecting up earlier American ancestors and show only one date per item, while the E162 database contains ALL the existing (conflicting, assumed, or otherwise) data we can find.

Second is a date labled "Change Date: xxxx". This is a date used internally by the E162 Project to show the date of the latest change to this person's data.
