Saginaw's Past

1914 Y.M.C.A
I received a thank
you note from the Young Women's Christian Association dated August 3, 1955. I
have kept it. At that time their address was at 215_S. Jefferson.
Every year they sponsored a
Festival of Nations at Ojibway Island. I played the accordion dressed in
a Norwegian Costume. There was a very good crowd in attendance.
A newspaper clippings says: John W. Hagerman will be master of ceremonies for
the YWCA Festival of Nations to be presented at 7:30 p.m. Saturday on Ojibway
Island. Mrs. Hagerman is general chairman. The program is sponsored by the YW
World Fellowship Committee and Friendship Club. Mrs. J. Cullen McDonald will be
accompanist.
Entertainers and the country they represent include: Ireland--Song and Irish
jog by Jimmy Kanary and Helen Reimann, song by Earl Sanders;
Germany-- accordion
selections of German folk music
by Thomas Kackmeister; Greece--
song by Miss Electra Anaegon; China-- interpretative day by Mrs. Earl Heckeroth;
Poland-- song by Miss
Deolores Glaza; Italy--
songs by Pasquale M. DiSarno and Miss Glaza; Socotland-- baypipe selections by
Charles Murdock and Dale Brown, dance by Miss Georgiana Bertovik; Lebanon-- song
by Wade Hamd; Morway and Finland--
accordion selections by Miss Dora Humpert.
The choir of Emmanuel Community Church will sing
Negro spirituals led by
Rev. Cornelius Monroe with Mrs. Nathaniel Ellis as accompanist.
Other nations represented by ushers will be:
Japan, Mrs. Albert A. Bouchard; Latvia, Mrs. Zina Perkiulis; Italy, Mrs.
Daniel A. Markle. Misses Betty Lou Lehtinen, Sharon Melick, Judy Accetta,
Frances Wilkinson, Mary Lou Dunn, Mrs. Richard M. Maslowski;
France, Mrs. Howard Wells; German, Mrs. Rolf Dutzmann;
Scotland, Mrs. George L.
Bertovick and Miss Barbara Reid;
Mexico, Socorro Morales.
Assisting Mrs. Hagermann are: Publicity, Mrs. Harzen C Beach and Mrs. James
Allardyce; staging, Mrs. Samuel Brilliant, stage setting, Mrs. Frank T. Whitney,
Mrs. Peter Rambo and Roman
Pylypiak; ushers, Mr. and Mrs. Rolf Dutzmann, Mr. and Mrs. Daniel A. Markle;
traffic and seating, Richard M Maslowski, Mrs. Theodore F. Ford, Mrs. Charles H.
Skrochi, Mrs. Manual Herrera, Mrs. Ray A. Woods and Miss Olive Corbett.
I was fortunate to play for their gathering for a
Halloween party at their
building and it sure seems like that was the building.
Hope this helps solve a mystery.
