BATTERBY

Maria BATTERBY was born in Burnham Thorpe, went to Canada and her family settled in Eastern Ontario. Her parents were Thomas BATTERBY and Ann HIGH. Some cousins also went to North America but settled in Northern New York in the United States.  In Canada, she met and married William BURD, also from Norfolk, in 1840 when she was about 20 years of age.

BIRD/BURD/BYRD

William BIRD from the county of Norfolk, not sure of the village.  He went to Canada about 1835 when he was about 15 years old.  I am not sure whether or not he went with his parents. He settled in eastern Ontario, near the village of Crysler. In Canada he met and married Maria BATTERBY, a Norfolk girl from Burnham Thorpe.

HOWES Thomas & Mary (BURR??) HOWES  left England in 1637 with two sons - arrived in Salem, MA with three sons, Thomas, Joseph, and Jeremiah. In 1638 he receives grant of land in Yarmouth, now Dennis, Cape Cod. His heirs formed Howes Family Association in 1978 to learn more about the family of Farmers, Sea Captains, Circus Owner, to preserve HOWES cemetery and archives and try to find more of Thomas and Mary's English roots. A genealogy of 16,000 names by Lt Col (RET) Robert Arthur HOWES was published in 2006 by Dennis Historical Society. Reunion meetings are held every three years. August 2010 in Salem Ma is next  event.

JARRED/JARRAD Robert JARRED (also variously listed as Garrard, Gerrad, Jarrad & Jarrard) married Ann WRIGHT on the 9th Oct 1777 in Wellingham, Norfolk, England and had 6 children.
Their youngest son, also Robert, married Elizabeth (Eady, Edith) SOUTHWELL in Kings Lynn, Norfolk on 28 May 1812 before taking up land near Gedney, Lincolnshire and raising 9 children.
Of these the oldest two, Jane and William stayed behind in England, James & Thomas both disappear whilst the rest - John, Robert, Susannah, Isaiah & Edward emigrate to Australia.
Isaiah's descendants use the JARRAD spelling and the rest use JARRED.

William married another Norfolk JARRAD/ED, Clarissa, originally from Gressenhall, and they lived and worked around the "Fens" having 10 children in Lincolnshire, Norfolk and Cambridgeshire. Their sons all used the JARRAD spelling. Of these ten 2 sons, James & Robert and 3 daughters, Clarissa, Elizabeth & Hannah stayed in England, whilst four sons, William, John, Edward & Thomas also emigrated to Australia like their uncles.

So far all the JARRED & JARRAD families in Australia are related, except one line, who descend from a John JARRED (also Jarrard) & Ann VINCENT, also of Norfolk.

NORGATE

In 1859, David and Mary (NORGATE) DAVEY went to New York with their first three children. Mary's sister, Elizabeth NORGATE, sailed with them. David and Mary then went to Canada with their six children and settled in Colchester South, Ontario. This is where their final four children were born.

In 1869, William Hargreaves DAVEY (father of the above David Davey) arrived in New York with his son John and family. The extended family settled in Grand Rapids, Michigan, USA near Williamʼs son Isaac who had immigrated in 1857.

At least two of William H. DAVEYʼs other children emigrated from Norfolk. Elizabeth Flowerday Davey and Jacob Davey settled in Orleans County, New York, USA.

NURSE/NOURSE

I have Norfolk ancestors who emigrated to Quebec Canada as follows:-   Thomas NURSE b 1798  South Creake son of Samuel NURSE and Martha CURSON, m 2 Dec 1819 South Creake to  Elizabeth HARPLEY b 1800 dau of John HARPLEY and Mary ?  Children John Oliver NURSE b 1827; Charles Money NURSE b 1829; Samuel NURSE b 1833; Noah NURSE b 1834.  All were b South Creake Norfolk except Samuel and Noah, they were both christened in Little Walsingham Norfolk. I think these are the children that emigrated with their parents.

Susan Adelaine b 1841 Canada and Noah b 1838 Canada, which probably means that Noah b 1834 died before 1838. There was a William NURSE b 1821 who remained in Norfolk.  I believe they emigrated in 1836, this date was given on the USA 1910 census for John Oliver.  They originally settled in Lingwick Sherbrooke County East Quebec. Thomas is noted in the" History of Compton"  where he was a saw & grist miller.  Descendents lived at Dudswell Quebec and John Oliver lived in Danville Caledonia Vermont USA.  Most USA and Canada records show the surname as NOURSE.  I have not found any records for Noah or Charles.

RIPLEY

In1574, William RIPLEY( glover) married Margaret THOMSON at Wramplingham,Norfolk.  The glover appears as a "selected person" (what does it exactly means?) in a 1577 muster roll of Wramplingham, hundred or Forehoe.  He also left a will dated Aug 31,1619, and was buried in Wymondham Jan 28,1620.  His son William RIPLEY was living with him in the same house in Wymondham, where his 4 children where baptized between 1621 and 1627.  I did not find a trace of his marriage and do not know the name of his wife, who is probably the one who accompanied him and the 4 children in the voyage to New Hingham, Massachussets in 1638.
