Civil Registration of births, deaths and marriages in England began in 1837. The registers are indexed alphabetically by surname, in years, by quarters ending in March, June, September and December. You will generally find Name, Registration District, page and folio number. From June 1866 the death index also includes age at death. Birth indexes from September 1911 also contain the mother's maiden name. The Marriage index contains the spouses name from March 1912.
