Nidsomer Norton Parish Church



The inscription on the ledger slab of the colliery disaster memorial reads :-

"In this grave is deposited the remains of the 12 under-mentioned sufferers, all of whom were killed at Wells Way colliery on the 8th November, 1839, by the snapping of the rope as they were on the point of descending into the pit. The rope was generally supposed to have been maliciously cut."
