Welcome to

LEIGH

Lancashire, England

Hello and welcome to my website based on my hometown of Leigh, England. Leigh is a town that was originally based on the fruits of agriculture and was actually famed at one time for the cheese that was produced in the area. With the introduction of the Industrial era, Leigh's prominence was built on the cotton mills that were once so numerous in the area. Cotton and coal were king in the area right up until the early 1980's when the triangle of prominent pitheads in the Leigh area stopped production due to the then government's policy. Today Leigh is predominantly a retail based town. Currently part of Wigan MBC (which, in turn, is part of Greater Manchester), Leigh was a proud town that had its own corporation until the government realignment in 1974. It was at that time that Leigh became governed by Wigan's council and moved from Lancashire to Greater Manchester. Speak to any "Leyther", however, and they will tell you that we are still from Leigh and still Lancastrians.

This website is aimed at helping to educate people from around the world about the town of Leigh and its surrounding towns and villages, mainly as a response to the many questions I get posted on my genealogical mailing list.
