He volunteered in 1914, and in the following year embarked for France, where during his service he fought in many notable battles. He was in action in Ypres, Vestubert and Loos, but at Arras was unfortunately gasses, being subsequently discharged as medically unfit in 1918. He holds the 1914-1915 Star and the General Service and Victory medals.
