William Cotton Risley

William Cotton Risley

Risley’s interests were wide, covering far more than his parochial and church activities. He was a magistrate, a Poor Law Guardian, a friend of the Bishop (“Soapy Sam” Wilberforce), many of the neighbouring gentry, down to local farmers and tradesmen.

His aunt Rebecca Cotton, and his friend John Barber, lived at Adderbury, which he visited constantly. His regular travelling to Banbury, Oxford, London and even Brighton, throw fascinating light on the change-over from stage coach to railway train. With voting qualifications in various constituencies, he followed politics keenly.

He was also a kindly family man, devoted to his wife Susan, his daughter Bessy, and his four sons. He extended his home at Deddington House, developed the garden and surrounding “pleasure grounds”, and supervised farming at Park Farm.

The Names Index runs to 16 pages - [see below]. The main categories in the Subject Index indicate the multitudinous topics that occur throughout the pages of his diary.

Early Victorian Deddington as observed by William Cotton RISLEY, Vicar of Deddington, 1836-1848.

Risley commenced his diary in 1835, shortly before he became Vicar and moved to Deddington. There he was able to maintain close friendship with kin at Adderbury. A selection from this diary, for his years as Vicar, has now been prepared by Geoffrey Smedley-Stevenson, and is published by the Banbury Historical Society.
