About John Calfee:
Will of John Calfee, 1785-1786, Shenandoah County, Virginia In the name of God amen, I, John Calfee,
of the county of Shanando and state of Virginia being weak in body but perfect in mind and memory
thanks be to God therefore calling to mind the mortality of my body and knowing that it is appointed
for all men once to die. Do make and ordain this my last will and testament taht is to say principally
and first of all I give and recommend my soul into the hands of almighty God that gave it and my body
I recommend to the earth to be buried in a decent and Christian burial at the descreation of my executopr
nothing doubting but at the general reserrection I shall receive the same again by the mighty power
of God and as touching such worldy estate where with it has pleased God to bless me with in this life
I
give Desmis and dispose of the same in the following manner and for Item that is to say I give and bequeath
unto my beloved wife her choice of my horse Creatures and her side saddle and a full third part of the
rest of my personal estate and the half of my land during her life the land to be divided and she to
have her choice as to the other half of my land,
I give and bequeath unto my son Charles and
after Deseas him to have her part and my will and desire is that my son Charles he shall have all the
rest of my personal estate except my wife's third but my desire is that my lawful debts that shall be
woing at my desease shall be discharged and paid before any division as made and my will and desire
that my son Charles shall pay unto my two daughters Bettey and Sarah five pounds each as their part
of my estate he having already satisfied my three sons William James and Benjamin as to their parts
and for my other two sons Henry and John I have given them their part to their full satisfaction and
I do likewise constitue and ordain my well beloved wife and my son Charles be my executors to this my
last will and testament and I rattifie and confirm this my last will and testament and no other. In
witness whereof I have hereunto set my hand and fix my seal this 15th day of April one thousand seven
