Rockdale Reporter, Thur., 19 July 2001 Funeral services for Alfred L. Gest, 86, were held at 10 a.m.
Thursday, July 12, 2001 at Phillips & Luckey Funeral Home in Rockdale with burial following in I.O.O.F.
Cemetery. Rev. Brian Bauer of Peace Lutheran Church officiated.
Mr. Gest died Monday, July 9
at Scott & White Hospital in Temple. He was a resident of the Gay Hill community near Rockdale and a
lifelong Milam Co. resident. He was born June 8, 1915 in the Bushdale community to Fritz W. and Selma
(Fleissig) Gest. Mr. Gest was a veteran of World War II, receiving two Bronze Stars while serving in
Okinawa. He married Velma Doss on Aug. 17, 1950 in Rockdale. Mr. Gest worked as a carpenter, farmer
and rancher.
Mr. Gest was preceded in death by his wife, Velma Gest, on March 11, 1999; a daughter,
Joyce Marie Huntsman on Oct. 19, 1982; and a sister, Ruby Eiland in 1950. Survivors include a son,
Dr. Alfred L. Gest Jr. and wife Dr. Alicia Gest of Dublin, OH; two brothers, Antone Gest and wife Beth
and Walter Gest and wife Dolores, All of Rockdale; four sisters, Leona Bland and husband Nolan, Hilda
McVoy and husband Adolph and Katie Jackson and husband Robert, All of Rockdale, and Thelma Scruggs and
husband Bobby of Laneport; three grandchildren, Melissa Huntsman, Anneliese Gest and Alessandra Gest;
and one great grandchild, Maycee Anderson. Pallbearers were Luke Gest, Melvin Eiland, Terry Jackson,
Michael Jackson, Nolan Bland Jr. and James Bland.
