About Joy Ann Ascol:

Joy Ann Ascol Dyer
Aug. 9, 1941 ? Jan. 28, 2001
Joy Ann Ascol Dyer was born in Tioga, Louisiana, to Al and Marzelle Ascol. She attended school in Beaumont, Texas, and graduated from South Park High School in 1959 and Lamar University in 1963. She also received her master?s degree from Texas A&M University in 1983.

She retired in June 2000, after a distinguished career of 34 years in the field of elementary education. Her tenure in Bryan included a teaching position at Crockett Elementary School, staff development leader and reading supervisor, principal at Johnson Elementary, Director of Elementary Education and Executive Director of Elementary Education. Under her leadership, many of the elementary schools in Bryan received state and national recognition and many innovative programs were implemented. She loved children and had the unique ability to see things through the eyes of a child.

She received many honors during her career, most notably Outstanding Elementary Teacher of the Year in Bryan ISD in 1980 and the Bryan ISD Heart Award in 2000.

Joy was involved in a number of church, school and community organizations. She was a member of First Baptist Church of Bryan. She belonged to the following professional organizations: Association of Texas Professional Educators, Texas Elementary Principals and Supervisors Association, National Association of Staff Development, Delta Kappa Gamma and Phi Kappa Phi. She served in various organizations, including the Board of Directors of the Bryan-College Station Chamber of Commerce, Brazos Valley United Way and the Brazos Valley Rehabilitation Center.

Joy?s name is a familiar acronym for Jesus Others Yourself and her life was a testament to this. She was a leader of people but a follower of Jesus Christ and always put Him first in her life. Her faith was the cornerstone of her life and she led by her Christian example. She truly was one who put others before herself, having spent her entire life in service to others. She was a devoted wife, mother and grandmother. She took great pleasure in doing special things with her granddaughters, Madison and Macy Joy, and had pride in her family?s accomplishments. She was a dear friend to many and always found time for them as well. Her life was a model to emulate and her courageous battle with brain cancer was a testimony of faith. Her spirit will live on in the many lives she has touched.

She was preceded in death by her parents and is survived by her husband of 35 years, Dean Dyer of Bryan; her son and daughter-in-law, Greg and JoLynn Dyer of Spicewood, Texas; two granddaughters, Madison Paige Dyer and Macy Joy Dyer of Spicewood, Texas; three brothers, Alfred Ascol and his wife Carol of Mauriceville, Texas, Bill Ascol and his wife Karen of Shreveport, Louisiana, Tom Ascol and his wife Donna of Cape Coral, Florida; two sisters, Gay Cravy of Hampshire, Texas, and Judy Bertrand and her husband Royce of Beaumont, Texas; one sister-in-law, Dianne Epperson and her husband Larry of Dallas, Texas; her mother-in-law, Laverne Dyer of Dallas, Texas; as well as a large extended family and many dear friends.

Memorial Services are set for 11 a.m. Tuesday at the First Baptist Church of Bryan with Dr. Tom Ascol, Dr. Tim Owens and Pastor Bill Ascol officiating. Interment will follow in the Bryan City Cemetery
