The Pike County Journal. Zebulon, Pike, Georgia, December
13, 1901 Mr. John Wesley Reid, one of Pike?s oldest and best citizens, who was cut in a gin last
Thursday afternoon, died Tuesday evening at 7 o?clock at his home about three miles from town. Mr.
Reid was cleaning out the mote box at the gin and got his hand caught which proved fatal.
Mr.
Reid was born in Jasper County, this state, March 5, 1811. When about 14 years of age, his father moved
to this County and settled where he lived at the time of his death. He was married when quite a young
man to Miss Ellen Smith of Muscogee County. To them were born seven children, six of whom survive him.
They are: Mrs. Sallie Cook, Mrs. Annie Lyons, Mrs. Nannie Wilson, Mrs. Emma Cawthen, of Texas, Alex
Reid of Cottonwood, Ala., and J.B. Reid. For more than half a century, Mr. Reid was a member of the
Methodist Church and was one of its most loyal members. He served in the war of 1833 and 1864. He
was a master Mason and was always true to his lodge.
His funeral occurred at the Methodist Church
here yesterday morning and was conducted by his pastor, Rev. C.V. Weathers. After the funeral service
the remains were taken in charge by the Masons and interred with Masonic honors.
John Wesley
Sr & Ellen Catherine S. REID are buried in the Zebulon Methodist Church Cem, with several of their
children & other relatives. There is a REID Family Burial Ground on the original REID Plantation (some
300 acres originally) property in Reidsboro, outside of Zebulon, Pike Co Ga; other REID children & kin
are buried there. I have photos of the first & second Rail Road. Station that John Wesley Sr built,
called the "Reidsboro Station". Also have photos of the REID house, gravestones, and the REID, COOK,
AlLEN & other allied families. from Kathleen L Hozza
