About Francis Marion (Frank) Amason:

Went to Milam Co, Tx from , Montgomery Co, Al, in the fall of 1885 at the suggestion of Frank's sister and brother-in-law, Frances and Monroe Caffey who lived in the Salty area.

From "Matchless Milam"
Francis Marion "Frank" and Elizabeth Jane (Rushing) Amason moved to Salty in Milam, Texas, from , Montgomery Co, Alabama in the fall of 1885 at the suggestion of his sister and brother-in-law, Frances and Monroe Caffey who lived in the Salty community.

Frank and Eliza Jane were both natives of , Montgomery Co, Alabama. He was born near Ramer, May 10, 1859, the youngest son in the family of thirteen children of Wiley B. and Eliza M. (Smart) Amason. Eliza Jane was born December 21, 1863, the second of the nine children of Thomas Jefferson Rushing and Mary Ann (Huffman) Rushing. Frank and ELiza Jane were married in 1882.

In Milam, the Amasons lived at Salty where Frank farmed and had a grocery store. Later, they moved to Thorndale for a brief time and then to San Gabriel where Frank had a larger grocery store, with dry goods. His grandchildren recalled going there during family visits on Sunday afternoons and eating sardines, onions, cheese, and crackers. The children also selected five cents of hard candy each. In the store, soda crackers came in the bulk and were sold by the pound. Customers brought cans with potatoes pused down on the spouts as stoppers to carry home kerosene. Celluloid collars for men were poplular. Captain's chairs around a pot-bellied stove served as a place for the men to relax and exchange stories.

The store burned, and Frank found one diamond ring from his jewelry collection and little else. He built another store just like the burned one. A doctor in San Gabriel showed him how to mix medicines and asked him to set up a pharmacy in one area of the store. In another area was the San Gabriel post office with Frank apointed Post Master in 1909. Five of their nine children survived childhood: Iris Roberta who married W.B. Elliott of Thorndale, Justis Howard who married Birdie Camp and lived in New Mexico, Effie Pearl who married Mr Isaacs and lived in Dallas, Annie Mae who married Frank Clement and lived in Austin, and Ora Lee who married Mr Hendrix and lived in Dallas. After retirement, the Amasons bought a home in Rockdale. Frank died April 10, 1941, and Eliza Jane died May 2, 1950. Both are buried in Rockdale.
