About Bryon B Gibbs:
FIND A GRAVE Birth: Oct. 8, 1919 Death: Sep. 16, 2007 SHREVEPORT, LA - Barney Gibbs passed
away Sunday, September 16, 2007. He was born in Shreveport, Louisiana, October 8, 1919 and married Eleanor
Wheless Owens in 1941. He graduated from LSU in 1941 and served in the Army as a weatherman during World
War II. After completing his military service, he resumed his employment as a geologist with United
Gas Pipeline Company. He retired from Wewoka Exploration Company in 1977 as Vice-President of Exploration.
He served as Chairman of the South Louisiana Reserves Committee for the American Association of Petroleum
Geologists and in that capacity worked with several European countries to assist them in establishing
their methodology for the measurement of natural gas reserves. Barney was a member of St. Paul's Episcopal
Church, and served on the Church Vestry. He was one of the founders of Boy Scout Troop 14. He served
as assistant Scout Master and Troop Committee Chairman for a number of years. During years of service
to the Boy Scouts he was awarded the Sleeping Merit Badge by the Staff of Camp Yatasee. Barney and Eleanor
were members of the Bayou Chapter of the Ozark Society. He served several years as President and was
very involved in the efforts to save the Cossotat River from being dammed.
He was preceded in
death by his mother, Roland Grigsby Gibbs; and his wife of 40 years, Eleanor Owens Gibbs.
He
is survived, and will be missed, by his daughter, Beth Gibbs Russell and her husband, Don Russell of
Shreveport; his son, Owen Gibbs and his wife, Tish of Euless, Texas; two granddaughters, Erin Gibbs
and Amy Gibbs; sister-in-law, Kathleen Owens; and nephews, James W. Owens and William C. Owens.
In
lieu of flowers the family requests donations to the Charles W. Owens Memorial Fund for Boy Scout Troop
14, through St. Paul's Episcopal Church.
The family would like to thank the staff of the Montclair
Manor for the many kindnesses that they gave to our father and friend.
Funeral services will
begin at 4 p.m. on Wednesday, September 19, 2007 at St. Paul's Episcopal Church. Officiating will be
The Reverend Guido Verbeck, Rector. Interment will follow at Forest Park Cemetery, St. Vincent Avenue.
