Napoleon Bonaparte Eiland was the son of Esaias Eiland and Nancy Spivey Eiland. He was born Dec. 9, 1837, in Wilkinson County, GA. He was the second of four sons born to the couple. Only Napoleon and the youngest son, John Spivey Eiland, lived to adulthood. The family moved to Stewart County, GA, between 1840 and 1850. After the death of his father in ????? where he married Sarah Dove Bethel on Jun 1, 1859in Calhoun County, AR. It was from that county that he enlisted in the service of the Confederacy.

He enlisted in Co. A, 4th AR Inf. On Aug. 17, 1861 and served until the end of the war. The 4th AR Inf. Was mustered into service on Aug. 17, 1861 in Miller?s Springs, Lawrence County, Mo. Company A was under the leadership of Capt. Joseph B. (Ben) McCulloch. They participated in the battle of Wilson?s Creek (MO), Pea Ridge (AR), Richmond (KY), Murfreesborough, Franklin and Nashville (TN), Chickamuauga, Reseca, and Atlanta (GA) and various other engagements. They surrendered with Gen. J. E,. Johnson on April 27, 1865 at Durham Station, NC.

During much of the time he was disabled by eye problems (chronic ophthalmic), brought on by ?undue exposure? early in his service. In spite of this handicap, he remained with his unit until the surrender.

He returned to AR where his wife and three children were waiting. After a few months they decided to move to Tx,. The family settled in Hunt County where he farmed for many years. Napoleon and Sara Dove had eight children: Viola V. Husbands, born March 9, 1860; Walter W., born Nov. 10, 1862; Eason Edward, born Jan. 31, 1865; Alvus A., born Dec. 9, 1867; Cuseter C., born Dec. 17, 1871; Florence F. Alexander, born Dec. 7, 1873; Lula L. Hale, Dec. 9, 1875; and Bedford B. Born July 29, 1878.

Napoleon was a farmer most of his life, although in later years he retired to Greenville and is listed in the 1900 as ?landlord.? He was noted for the fine horses he raised and his sons were notable horsemen. Napoleon was active in the Joseph E. Johnston camp, United Confederate veterans. He died May 15, 1907 in Greenville, Tx. And is buried at East Mount Cemetery there. He was a member of the Baptist church and respected citizen of the community. His descendents remember him fondly and respect the values for which he stood.
