Overview
William Preston, known as the "first permanent
white settler," also referred to in the family as "the old sheriff,"
of Defiance, OH, married Asenath Butler,
in Wood County, OH, 7 Dec 1820 (probably actually in or near Defiance, since
Wood County provided administrative support to the area at the time - it became
Williams Co in 1824 and Defiance Co in 1845). Their youngest son, James P. Preston
(Great-great grandfather of William L.
Smith, compiler of this web site), was born 22 Feb 1835.
Local history
accounts in Defiance, OH, say that the "Butler girl" had brothers
living on the Maumee River, several miles below Defiance, near the village of
Florida. We seek more information on these persons: Identity of siblings, the
Butler family, etc. We also continue to seek information on the early years
of William Preston and his family. We do now have an account of where we believe
that our William Preston came from and who his ancestors were, but the additional
confirmation (or disconfirmation) of this evidence is sought.

William Charles PRESTON, b. 1780 (not 1785, as indicated in some paperwork);
also, speculation of an earlier marriage in Vermont, about 1797, and a first
son, William C. (probably Charles) Preston,
b. Vermont, 16 Nov 1797, has apparently been laid to rest based on findings
of 7 Jun 1998, that the father of William C. Preston was Joseph, and that
he was a first cousin, not a son, of "the old sheriff."
It also appears he is not the Capt Preston of Wayne's Army (who was through
Defiance in 1794); this Capt Preston was of Louisville, KY, descended from
the Virginia Prestons.
Parentage (and related ancestory)
appears to have been established through individual contributions of Gene Preston,
Elena Anderson, and Bill Smith during the May-June 1998 period, based, of course
on works of many others, largely anonymous, over the years. We, of course, are
just beginning to assemble pieces of the true story, bit by bit, as we scrape
away the sediment of time. The true story happened, we can but reveal as much
of it as there is still there, in the records, both oral and written, for us
to find.

1) New research indicates that the William C. Preston who died in St. Joseph
Twp, Williams Co, OH, in 1869, was a first cousin to our William Preston
("the old sheriff" - I will continue to use this designation,
for ease of reference among the various William Prestons). There were some
suggestions that he might have been a son, but newly available IGI records
show that his father was Joseph, and, other, related, family relationships
appear to have been established. [The William C.
Preston family records are being temporarily moved to bottom of this
page, pending the additional on earlier generations.]
2) Will create a new "sketches" web page, or set of pages, for
earlier ancestory of the Prestons. It will then be linked from the "link
to father" of William Preston - the old sheriff, below. This link is
now to the Preston/Butler/Miller/Smith
Sketches Menu page.
3) Added links in Charles William Preston family. Would really like to hear
