John Theodore McClain, my great-grandfather, died December 25, 1931 in Galveston, Texas. He was born on March 3, 1866 in Indiana. According to the 1920 federal census, both his parents were also born in Indiana. On August 24, 1893, he married Josephine A. Winchell at St. Patrick Church, Denison, Grayson Co., Texas. There is no civil record of this marriage but I did locate a record at the parish at St. Patrick's.
While married, John and Josephine had two children, my grandfather, Bernard Theodore McClain (picture), and his sister, Anna Elizabeth McClain.
Bernard was born December 29, 1894 in Denison, Texas. He married Emma Ethel Schwartz in Norwich, Connecticut, on September 19, 1916 while stationed near there during World War I. They had five children, one of whom was my dad, William Paul McClain (picture), three of whom are still living. Bernard died in an accident at home on March 27, 1949 in Oklahoma City, Oklahoma. He is buried at Rose Hill Burial Park along side his wife, Emma (picture).
Anna was born July 7, 1896 in Denison, Texas. She married at least once to Homer O. Beasley, though in her father's obituary she is listed as Anne Bailey. Anne died in September of 1982 at a rest home in Minneola, Wood Co., Texas, having no issue.
By September 25, 1899, John and Josephine divorced and John is living and working for the railroad in Galveston. On September 1, 1920, John married Mamie F. Miller (who is listed on the 1920 federal census as "Marian"). They lived together until his death.
I am still trying to locate John's parents in Indiana ca. 1866.
1920 Census Soundex M245--Texas -- this is a partial soundex index, just "AA" through "ALI first names. I had planned on eventually transcribing the whole thing, but haven't returned to it yet. This is a partial listing. "AA" through "ALI" first names are here, but don't let that stop you from looking. There are names that don't fit into this soundex code because many individuals are listed with M245 families, whether related, roomer, lodger or servant.
