Beebes of New York

New York

NOTE: This record came from Iowa where members of the Williamson and Beebe families were interviewed. It is the best record we have so far to indicate their migration pattern starting in New York. We are seeking to learn where they came to New York from.

Chauncey Williamson submitted by Dick Barton

Chauncey Williamson,  a native of Onondaga County, Town of Spofford, New York, was born May  23, 1823.  He is the son of John and Nancy Williamson, natives of New  York.  When he was eight years old his parents removed from New York to  Pennsylvania, remaining there one winter; they then went to Monroe,  Ashtabula County, Ohio, and here our subject dwelt until he was twenty  years old, receiving a common-school education.  When he left Ohio he  went to Oakland County, Michigan, remaining there about six years; here  he was employed in various pursuits, and in the spring of 1850 he  started to California.  On reaching Council Bluffs he stopped, and  concluded to remain in Iowa.  Mr. Williamson  was married April 15,  1851, to Miss Elizabeth J. Liston.  Seven children were born to them -  George H., Matilda (deceased), Henry (deceased), John, Nancy, wife of  David Baughman; Mary, wife of C. A. Beebe, and David.  Mrs. Williamson  was called to the other life in October, 1869, at the age of thirty-nine  years.  Mr. Williamson was again married February 22, 1872, to Leanah,  the widow of Milton M. Beebe, and daughter of William and Polly  (Headrick) Van Ausdell.  She was born in Lawrence County, Ohio, May 29,  1826, and was married to Milton M. Beebe in Lee County, Iowa, in 1850.  They resided in Shelby County from 1851 until 1857, and during this time  Mr. Beebe figured quite prominently in business and political circles of  the county.  He was engaged in the mercantile trade in Manteno, and was  elected the first sheriff of the county.  In 1857 he removed to  Missouri, and died there before the close of the Rebellion.  In 1866  Mrs. Beebe and five children returned to Shelby County; the children are  - Luella G. (deceased), wife of Isaac Fauts; Georgianna V., wife of  George Williamson; Cornelius A., Kate I., wife of Henry Urfer; Mary M.,  wife of Marion Hawley.  Mr. Williamson and Mrs. Beebe were married  February 22, 1872.  After his first marriage Mr. Williamson resided in  Mills County, then Harrison County, and in 1854 came to Shelby County,  and purchased 160 acres of land in Grove Township, which he still makes  his home.  He has made many valuable improvements, erecting a residence  and barns for stock and grain.  Mr. Williamson has done much toward the  advancement and growth of this part of Shelby County, and has held many  positions of trust among the people.  He assisted in the organizing of  the school districts in his section.  In politics his sentiments find  expression in the principles of the Republican party.  Mr. and Mrs.  Williamson are consistent members of the reorganized church of Jesus  Christ, or the Latter-Day Saints, he having served as priest in this  body for twenty-six years.  They have been zealous workers in their  church, and have done much for the religious element of the community,  and are deserving of the regard in which they are held.

Hi Sarah. Gloria mentioned your research to me recently. I've been late in posting my family's information leaving big holes in the puzzle until now and I'm sorry it took me so long. Gloria made the connection of Mariah Bebee to my Polly Haskins and so we have some of Bebee's and Haskins from NY to Illinois making sense now. My line: Horace and "Polly" Mariah Haskins had Martha Minerva Haskins m. Daniel Beebe had (Aldalia, Anna Marie, Nellie, and) Willard (Sr.). Willard Sr. m. Mabel Rich (twice) having John and Willard (Jr.) who m. Florence Wade having Willard Beebe III and Nancy Annette Beebe who m. Robert Andrew Geshner having Glenn Robert Geshner (deceased) and me, Phyllis Ann Geshner Warren.
I've left out most of the othe siblings along the way to keep it simple here and I've written it elsewhere in the Beebe thread. Email me if you want more. [email protected]
-Phyllis Warren

My Polly beebe was born in N.Y. and married in Michigan in 1839
Polly married Horace Hayes (born N.Y. 1808)and they had  four children:
1.Sanford Beebe Hayes born 1840 in Monroe county, MI - married Nancy Ann Blackburn 1859 in Washtenaw,MI.
 2.Alvira 1841,
 3.Alfred 1843 and
 4. Olive born 1844 married to William Coe 1863 in Monroe county, Mi.
Do you think there may be a connection ?
Sincerely, Penny Auffert

I don't know if related but Polly Maria Beebe and her father (John Beebe mar.Sallie Clark of John Clark) b.17 Jun 1820 in Loraine, Jefferson County, NY married Horace Haskins (b.17 Nov 1820 Jefferson County, NY, son of John Haskins and Mary Tolman Haskins who d. 28 Aug 1783). Horace and John Beebe built a ship in Henderson Harbor and left with their families to Chicago in 1844 and settled in DeKalb where Horace became a wealthy farmer and businessman (reference John Deere fame). Horace and Polly had Mary Elizabeth and Martha Minerva Haskins. Martha Minerva mar. Daniel A. Beebe having several children including Willard Beebe (whom we call Senior on this end) who in turn married Mabel Rich twice and had Willard Beebe (Junior)and John Beebe. Junior mar.Florence Wade and had Nancy Beebe (mar.Geshner) and Willard Beebe (III). Might your Beebes be part of the John Beebe from NY above? I am seeking Mabel Rich (my GrGrandmother) who was treated badly and tossed out by Willard Beebe !
Sr. shortly before he tossed out Willard Beebe Jr. because he "looked too much like her." Mabel may have died in Oregon (mother is Carrie Rich). If connected, email [email protected]. Hope it helps, even if to eliminate extra names in your lineage research.

:

I don't know if this will help but it might help you if you come across Nancy Beebe. My mother is Nancy Beebe Geshner (b.1930) of Willard Beebe Junior and Florence Helgesen Beebe. Nancy's brother is Willard Beebe III. Now we come to the questionable part. Williard Beebe (Senior as he is called in the living family) married Mabel Rich twice. After she died he married Rose Resnick and had more children (Martha Minerva and Albert Daniel (called "Danny"). You'd have to check time periods closely but there was time in between marriages and he was a bit of a drunk and abusive. He kicked Mable Rich (mother Carrie) out and we are trying to find evidence of what happened to her. ALSO, Willard Beebe Senior was the son of Daniel Beebe and Martha Minerva Haskins (sometimes appearing on census records as "Merniva"). Daniel Beebe was also a bit of a drunk and had MANY different jobs, possibly associated with the railroad
and was separated/married to Martha Minerva Haskins twice so there's time in between there too. If you should find a connection to your Beebe or any information about Mabel Rich or any further origins to Daniel Beebe please email me at [email protected]

Hi, I have been looking for my Gr Grandma and Gr Granpa's parents for Ababail Beebe, who married Richard Cortright and is  buried at Waite's Church Yard by Owego. I found them in 1860 living with a James House with a Avery Beebe next door. I haven't been able to connect my Abagail to Avery. If anyone has any infor I really would appreciate it. Thanks, Louise [email protected]

Hi all you Beebe researchers,

I was wondering if there are any of you out there that might be related
to the following
Cyrus Beebe son of Zadock II Beebe  Cyrus first married Rhody Chesebro
then after she died married her widowed sister Phoebe Palmer.

Cyrus and Rhody had two boys and a girl.  I am not sure if the girl died
or not.  The two boys Judson L. and Cyrus are the two men I am interested
in.  Judson is my great grandfather Hiram J. Beebe's father and Cyrus II
is his brother.  Sure would love it if I could connect with any cousins
out there that have the two Cyrus's as grandparents and great great
grandparents and so forth.

I would also like to connect with Hiram's daughter's family, Lela
Winifred who married I believe a George Smith.  They lived near Long
Island, NY.  And from what I can tell had at least one child.

Lela is my granfather's Will L. Beebe's sister.  Their brother James H.
Hills never married.

I would also like to connect with relatives of Agnes Beebe.  I am not
sure if the Agnes that I would like to find is a daughter of Samuel and
Mary Keeney or a granddaughter.  If she is a granddaughter, it would be
thru Thomas son of Samuel and Mary.

This particular Agnes married a Azariah Pratt and had Seth Pratt who
married Abigail Tully.

Seth married Abigail had Ezra Pratt.  He married a Martha?  Ezra and
Martha had Fanny who married a John Kneeshaw.  They had a daughter named
Esther.  Esther married John B. Smith and had Ralph Smith.  Ralph married
Esther Roe daughter of Horace and Zilpha A. Jackson.  Zilpha's parents
were D P Jackson and  Rachel A. Bower.  They had another child they named
Ethel L. Jackson.  She married my husband's grandfather Frank Meddaugh.
They had 4 children. Preston, Elmer, Catherine and Rachel.  It is Elmer
that married Evelyn Green that is the father of my husband Larry.

Now how's that for making a complete circle of the Beebe line?

I also have a Lathrop line that connects into the Beebe line that
eventually meets up with my husbands family the Meddaugh/ Legg branch of
the family. That's either once or twice.

Also in my husband's family is a connection to the Edwards, Bliss and
Lathrop lines but this time it is thru my husband's aunt Catherine
Meddaugh Deming  who is middle daughter of Frank and Ethel Jackson
Meddaugh of Candor, NY, Larry's grandparents.
Catherine married Richard Deming and it is thru his mother Neva Edwards
that the Bliss/Lathrop/Beebe connection is made.

So if any of you Beebe's descendents out there are related to the people
I have mentioned please please drop me a note perferably thru my private
e-mail at [email protected].

And if any of you Beebe's have in your notes information about the
children of William L. Beebe and May A. Payne who are name Susan T. Beebe
and C. Arthur Beebe, and have the dates of their birth's listed as Aug.
18th 1894 in Candor, NY and for my father C. Arthur Beebe listed as being
born May 5, 1899 then it would be a good idea to erase those dates and
make them as follows.

Susan T. Beebe born Aug. 20th 1894 in Earlville, NY.
And for C. Arthur Beebe, May 6, 1898 in Earlville, NY.

There is another individual who has in her notes that grandpa William was
born in Candor. Which is as wrong as can be.

Here is the correct info. On May 9th 1869 William Lyman Beebe was born in
S. Byron, NY. to Ellen Amelia Hills and Hiram J. Beebe.

Now for some interesting facts,

Hiram J. Beebe had been for quite a while a carpenter. And was known for
his use of Ionic Columns in his field of carpentry.

In July of 1899 with the willing help of Frank Spooner son of Francie
Hills (daughter of James and Chloe Clark Hills of Brookfield and number 2
sister of Hiram's wife Ellen Amelia Hills Beebe also of Brookfield) got
together with Hiram J. Beebe and his son William L. Beebe of Earlville
and decided to go into the news paper business.

Frank at the age of 16, some years before had started his own paper the
"Young American"  that soon grew and grew and he soon expanded his
newspaper.

My great grandfather Hiram for some reason decided that he wanted out of
the carpentery business ( guess he got tired of having to many smashed
fingers as the hammer came down).

Now I am just guessing on this part for my grandfather Will, but I think
he had been a printer in Earlville and later in Brookfield for his cousin
Frank. But again that is just supposition on my part as I haven't
verified it yet.

But this I do know to be true and that is in July of 1899, The three men
got together the third man being their cousin Frank's, started a paper
they called the Candor Courier in Candor, NY Tioga Co. It remained in
existance till about 1968.

Hiram was the publisher I believe and William the editor.  And my dad
Art, well he was allowed only in the office under his mother's watchful
eye so he wouldn't play with the presses and other printing stuff.
Besides being the only boy, his time at working there and ownership of
the paper would come soon enought.

The paper from the day Hiram and Will bought it came out every Thursday
with out fail.  Then Hiram J. died in Candor in January 21, 1906.
However, he wasn't buried their but in N. Brookfield in the Hills
cemetery with his father in-law James Hills.  There is no marker but
according to the sextant of the cemetery, he has the records of Hiram's
buriel.  Hiram's wife Ellen Amelia Beebe died in Aug. 1928 also in Candor
but is buried in Candor at the Maple Grove cemetery along with her son
William who died in June on the 17th in 1934 and his two wife May A.Payne
who died early Feb. 1922, and Anna Personeous daughter of Sarah Snow and
David Personeous who died in Aug. 1954 also in Candor.

My father Art Beebe, after his father William died in June of 1934 became
the publisher and editor in chief.  And with the help of other's he kept
the paper up and running till he retired in 1952 when he sold it to Bob
and Fran Fox who later sold it to Bill and Vera Muir.
The Muir's had it till about 1968 when they put the paper permanently to
bed.

If any of you would like to know more about the Beebe family particularly
the children of William and May, please let me know.

Joan Beebe Meddaugh
formerly of Candor, NY Tioga Co.
Now of Portland, Or.
Awaiting anxiously to hear from all my new cousins.

I have a question.  Hopefully some one can help me.

I am the only daughter of Cyrus Arthur Beebe formerly of Earlville, NY
Then of Candor.  His father Will Lyman Beebe married first
May A Payne of W. Eaton, NY daughter of Truman and Olive Damon Payne.
Grandma May died in Feb. 1922 in Candor and grandpa Will married again in
Aug. 1925 to Anna Personeous who had been their neighbor on Humiston St.
when they first came to Candor, in 1899 from Earlville.

Grandma Anna as she like to be called died in 1954 and left the house and
the contents ( which were my dad's and his sister's mother's ) to them.
The clothes and jewelry and other items that weren't grandma May's were
given to her nieces and nephew.

My question is this, if I could give the names of the nieces and nephew
to any one out there that is researching the Beebe/Personeous connection
do you think you might be able to help me learn more about these people.

Anna's parents were Sarah Snow and David Personeus.  And in her Will,
there is listed a  Edgar David and Sarah M.  Personeus as being her niece
and nephew.  She has it listed in this way. I leave to Sarah M Personeus
widow of my nephew Edgar David Personeus certain items which she then
names.  And to my niece and executrix Irene Ruth Personeus of 139 Croton
Avenue, Ossining, NY I leave such and such.

I also leave to my nieces and nephews,  Matty A. Personeus, Charles C.
Personeus, Lyman Samuel Personeus, Ruth Janie Super, Flora Ellis Johnson,
and Esther Marie Johnson as well as to Sarah and Irene the remainder of
my estate.

There is a Personeus family in Candor but they are not related to my
grandmother.

I do know that at one time Anna had been a nurse and I think either
worked in Sayre, PA or Waverly at the hospital there.  I do know she was
born in Athen's, Pa.

I sure would appreciate any help I could get even if it is to direct me
to another place I could search.

Thank you all so much for any and all help I know I will receive.
