CHAUNCEY WILLIAMSON, a native of Onondaga County, Town of Spofford, New York,
was born May 23, 1823. He is the son of John and Nancy Williamson, natives of New York.
When he was eight years old his parents removed from New York to Pennsylvania, remaining
there one winter; they then went to Monroe, Ashtabula County, Ohio, and here our subject
dwelt until he was twenty years old, receiving a common-school education. When he left Ohio he went to Oakland County,
Michigan, remaining there about six years; here he was employed in various pursuits, and in the spring of 1850 he started
to California. On reaching Council Bluffs he stopped, and concluded to remain in Iowa.

Mr. Williamson was married April 15, 1851, to Miss Elizabeth J. Liston. Seven children were born to them -- George H.,
Matilda (deceased), Henry (deceased), John, Nancy, wife of David Baughman; Mary, wife of C. A. Beebe, and David.
Mrs. Williamson was called to the other life in October, 1869, at the age of thirty-nine years. Mr. Williamson was again
married February 22, 1872, to Leanah, the widow of Milton M. Beebe, and daughter of William and Polly (Headrick) Van
Ausdell. She was born in Lawrence County, Ohio, May 29, 1826, and was married to Milton M. Beebe in Lee County,
Iowa, in 1850. They resided in Shelby County from 1851 until 1857, and during this time Mr. Beebe figured quite
prominently in business and political circles of the county. He was engaged in the mercantile trade in Manteno, and was
elected the first sheriff of the county. In 1857 he removed to Missouri, and died there before the close of the Rebellion. In
1866 Mrs. Beebe and five children returned to Shelby County; the children are -- Luella G. (deceased), wife of Isaac
Fauts; Georgianna V., wife of George Williamson; Cornelius A., Kate I., wife of Henry Urfer; Mary M., wife of Marion
Hawley. Mr. Williamson and Mrs. Beebe were married February 22, 1872. After his first marriage Mr. Williamson
resided in Mills County, then Harrison County, and in 1854 came to Shelby County, and purchased 160 acres of land in
Grove Township, which he still makes his home. He has made many valuable improvements, erecting a residence and
barns for stock and grain. Mr. Williamson has done much toward the advancement and growth of this part of Shelby
County, and has held many positions of trust among the people. He assisted in the organizing of the school districts in his
section. In politics his sentiments find expression in the principles of the Republican party. Mr. and Mrs. Williamson are
consistent members of the reorganized church of Jesus Christ, or the Latter- Day Saints, he having served as priest in this
body for twenty-six years. They have been zealous workers in their church, and have done much for the religious element
of the community, and are deserving of the regard in which they are held.

My line is Chauncey, George Henry, Chancy Merritt, Eunice (my grandmother). So I guess that makes it 4th for me. I have done alot of digging but I'm getting stuck. One interesting thing I found was that our Chauncey isn't the same one that married Fanny Tyler in New York. Our Chauncey was in Iowa in 1860, and Fanny Tyler and her Chauncey were still in New York!! There's a few more that I have come up with. Please email me at [email protected], I would like to see what you think.

Don,
We had a tremendous amount of help from a Dr. Lain L. Garrison (deceased) who did the tough research on our immigrant ancestor.

I knew, because I had stumbled across a cousin who also found the same information that Dr. Garrison had found and she shared it with me.
The information came in the form of a family bible kept by Samuel Garritsen. It had been translated earlier and was just waiting for someone to come along and rediscover it. How does Garritsen connect with Williamson?
My immigrant's name was Willem Garritsen, thus his children all became Willemse(n).

The long form is in the RECORD a publication put out by the New York Genealogical and Biographical Society. Vol 133, Number 3, July 2002.
Here is the short form of the story.
"The parentage of Willem Willemse is known. It is spelled out in a family record started by his half-brother Samuel Gerritsen, the original of which is held by the Brooklyn Historical Society.
Mary (surname still unkown) was born in 1636 in Burmuda (of all places) and married there in 1650 William Gerritsen.
Willem Willemse, the son of this couple, was born in 1653 in Burmuda, and in 1656 they had a son Cornelis.
In 1659 Mary and William Gerritsen arrived in New Netherland. They had a  daughter Sarah born 1660 and Hannah 1662.
In 1662 William Gerritsen died, and in 1663 Mary married Gerrit Remmersen, a native of Friesland who had come to Amersfoort (Flatlands) in 1656. They had Anna, Rem, Samuel, Maria and Rachel, all of whom used the patronymic Gerritsen which became their surname.
Mary (the mother of Willem Willemse) died in 1721 and was buried in Gravesend.
Samuel Gerritsen, who kept the record from which all of the above is taken, also had this entry which I will quote in full:  "In the year of our Lord 1722 the 2nd of February my brother William Willemsen fell asleep in the Lord on a Friday evening about 7 o'clock and was buried on a Tuesday after aged about 70 years." There is no more in this record about Willem, but there is no question that he is your           Willem Willemse who married  Mayken Wyckoff. The Hannah who married Marten Wyckoff was his sister.

Dr. Aline was unable to finish her research, because of her early death from cancer.
But many people have written to the editor with their research papers and the Williamson part of the "Garritsen to Williamson" research should be published in the January 2004 RECORD.

Here is what I have. If you can add or correct, please do.........CS

William Anthony, born ca 1844 in Ohio; died ca 1874. He married 21. Mary E. Frye Cade about 1865. They had at least three children, Harriet "Hattie", Lucy and Samuel, all born in Iowa. In 1870, they were living in or near Croton, Van Buren Twp., Lee County, Iowa. M.E. Anthony is listed as a landowner in Van Buren Twp., Lee County in 1874. It is unknown where William or Mary are buried.

Mary E. Frye, born about 1836 in Ohio; died November 2, 1922 in Lee County, Iowa. She was the daughter of 42. Lewis Frye and 43. Anna/Annis Davis. Mary first married on Aug. 17, 1854 in Lee County, Iowa, to Henry "Harry" Cade, born ca 1832. In 1860 they were living in or near Bonaparte, Harrisburg Twp., Van Buren County, Iowa. Harry had come to Iowa from Ohio in 1854. Their daughters, listed in the 1860 census: Catharine, 5, Anna, 3, and Adeline, 1. Harry Cade, as a Corporal in the 25th Iowa Infantry, was mortally wounded July 22, 1864 in the Civil War. Mary had five daughters named in the 1870 census whose surname was Cade: Katherine, Ellen, Louisa, Gloria(?), and Emma, all born in Iowa. Mary married (2) William Anthony and married (3) Frank Waste, a Civil War veteran.

Lewis W. Frye born ca 1799 in Virginia; died ca 1859 in probably Des Moines County, Iowa; and married about 1835 probably in Ohio. to 43. Anna/Annis Davis. The Frye family  moved to Iowa from  Rome Twp., Athens County, Ohio in 1853. In 1856, Lewis, 57, and Anna, 39, were living in Union Twp., Des Moines County, Iowa. Their children were Stephen H., 20, Mary, 19, Hadley, 17, Louisa, 15, James, 8, Charles, 5, Harry, 3, and William, 1. All of the children except Harry and William, who were born in Iowa,  were born in Ohio. (Hadley is also listed as a laborer on  the Henry Vance farm nearby in the 1856 census. ) Daughter Mary, 19, was married to Harry Cade, 24, and the young couple and their year-old daughter Catharine were living with her parents. (The seven year spread between James and Louisa is unusual could be grandchildren. )

Anna/Annis Davis born ca 1817 in Ohio married (1) Lewis Fry about 1835 and married (2) Milton Bebee before 1860. In 1860, Anna and Milton Bebee were living near Bonaparte, Harrisburg Twp., Van Buren County, Iowa. Hadley Fry, 21, was a laborer boarding with neighbor Fredrick Farnum and Mary's other sons were living with the Bebees.  Daughter Mary Cade and family were neighbors. Location of Louisa is unknown, probably married. Have found nothing on this family after 1860.
Milton Bebee, 31, was living with his wife Emily and children two doors down from the Fry's in 1850 Rome Twp., Athens County, Ohio and other Bebee's were nearby (Sydney, 38, and Charles, 63, were nearby. Harry Cade (listed as Henry Cadi, 19) was living in the home of  Sydney Bebee (possibly a brother of Sydney's wife Julia??)
