I'm not sure who wrote the message. I moved it to my Rutledge file and it's not there. Anyway, I descend from Michael's first son, John B. who was born in 1801. I have their 3 children as follows: John B. Rutledge born 03 Sep 1801 (maybe in Baltimore, maybe in Mercer County, PA before it became Trumball Co. Ohio- his death certificate says he was born in Maryland; James Hiram Rutledge born about 1803 and Elizabeth 15 Apr and not sure which year.  John was living in Trumball Co. when he was accidentally shot by a neighbor who was bear hunting and John had a shock of very dark hair. In the waning light I guess he looked like a bear. Well, anyway, he left shortly thereafter and moved to Indiana where he remarried Rachel Smith in 1842. There is some information that he might have been married 3 times. John's son Hiram (maybe named after his brother) was born in Ohio in 1820. Both John B. and Hiram moved to Berrien Co, Michigan and there John B. died in 1874. He's buried in
Lakeside Cemetery, Chickaming Township, Berrien Co. I have a lot of mysteries to solve yet, but hope to before I'm too old to research. Hope this helps. Mary in Michigan.

 List,

I am sorry to have put off informing you for so
long,  and even now I don't have all the detailed
information with me, but my grandfather died Nov 8th, 2005.

He was living in NC at the time of his death but he lived
his entire life in MD until moving to NC in 2000.

He is a direct descendant of the MD line, leaving 2
 sons, 5 grandsons & 3 granddaughters after a long
and happy life. My grandmother died almost 2 years
 before him.

Let me know what details you might need for your

Rebecca born 1840 Ohio
Arthur born 1841 Indiana
Elizabeth born 1842 Indiana
William born 1845 Indiana
David Rutledge born 1847 Indiana

Valentine Rutledge born  1849 Indiana would be 31 in 1880

Anthony Rutledge and Catherine  are age 60 which makes them in the  same age

Robert Rutledge born 1862 Virginia
Nancy Rutledge born 1864 Virginia
Valentine Rutledge born 1844 Virginia age 36

the 1880 census list Moses with the name of Anthony Rutledge

the son Valentine is living with them age 36 -- there is an age difference

something to
ponder about ?

Hi Carol,
It is good to hear from you.  Does this information of Keziah Rutledge being
the daughter of Michael Rutledge fit with your information.?  I have an
earlier Keziah, daughter of John Rutledge & Jane, who married 03 November
1761 John Parks.

Which Michael Rutledge is the father of Keziah Rutledge Beeman?
It is always nice to know there are other researchers out there interested
in Maryland Rutledges.

Hi Stephanie~~
According to Rachel Clemons' book, "My Rutledge Family...Book II...",
Michael b. 1777, is the son of Michael Rutledge b. about 1754 Baltimore Co,
MD and died bef 1820 and Elizabeth ________________ .

He is also, according to her book, a brother to my 3 great grandmother, Ruth
b. about 1796/5.  In a msg I have from Rachel dated June 11, 1999, she
states:  "Family tradition has it that Elizabeth Rutledge, a widow, moved to
PA from MD*, (PA was really Trumbull Co., OH, which is on the PA border.)
she brought seven dau's and Michael as well as 2 nieces & nephew David. )
This probably not quite right.  In 1820 Trumbull Co. OH, Vernon twp is
Michael Rutledge and Edmund.  I do not believe that this Michael is her son
but is Michael Rutledge who married Eleanor Deason."

"Children of Michael Rutledge and Elizabeth are:"
Michael b. abt 1777
Sarah b. about 1788
Penelope b. 08 Oct 1792
Ruth b. abt 1795
Casiah b. abt 1796
Nancy Anna b. abt 1796

She also states in that msg, that Michael 1777 and Mary had a daughter
Elizabeth who married Carmi Barnes.

*early 1800's...

Hope this is helpful to you....................
Carol

This is my family line on Michael Rutledge and Elinor Deason
I have letter from John Deason Rutledge grandson telling of Michael Rutledge
who had two marriages and two sets of children. Michael Rutledge 1740 2nd marriage was to an Elizabeth,  Michael died in Maryland, and aged Elizabeth
came with her son Corp. Michael to Trumbull County Ohio. The son Corp. Michael
Rutledge also had two marriages 1st to a Mary Burns, 2nd to  Lydia Ackley Emmons wife of Jeremiah Emmons.
The father Michael Rutledge 1740 married to Elizabeth had son Corp. Michael Rutledge born 1777
along with seven daughters, the 7 daughters are listed in attachment.

My line is from Micheal and Elinor Deason who had daughter Clara Rutledge,
EdmoundRutledge,  John Deason Rutledge born 1773 , and William Rutledge.
Elinor Deason Rutledge died in Maryland,  supposedly Michael died there too,
in the aritcle says second wife  Elizabeth walked to Ohio with son Michael and
his seven sisters about 1800. The article refers to Elizabeth as son Michaels, widowed mother.
Son Corp. Michael Rutledge married Lydia Ackley Emmons in 1808 Trumbull County Ohio. Jeremiah Emmons died in 1790 in Conn. It is thought that when Lydia and
Michael married they were older people and did not have many children and have
only found one listed for them.
Corp. Michael died in 1867 Vernon twp Trumbull County Ohio. He was the only Michael in
Trumbull county. He was in War of 1812 and drew a pension.
The Trumbull Historical Society says that the DAR records and cemetery records
are incorrect about his burial. The correct information is he is buried in Center
cemetery Trumbull County Ohio. DAR of Trumbull has record someplace other than where
he is buried which was a typo in compiling information.
The half brother of Michael Rutledge born 1777 was Edmound and he was in
Trumbull county along with Michael. I have not found anything on Edmound yet
except he was the father of Emmons Rutledge who died in Cambden South Carolina.
I think in 1838.

Subject: Joseph Sadler Rutledge memorial on March 8

Hi Freida,
I've been thinking about you and wondering how you're doing. I hope you had a nice Christmas, how's the grandbabies and your daughter?
I wanted to let you know that Joseph Rutledge's headstone is here, sitting on my carport. It's just really nice, white granite marble. I'm going to try and get the Cowan cemetery cleaned up sometime in the next 2 weeks or so...it really needs it, has some limbs, etc. That, is if the weather holds up. Charlotte and Jerry will help to, and maybe some of my sisters. I'm going to put the headstone up in about a week, so it can be settling.
The memorial services for Joseph Sadler Rutledge are scheduled for March 8, 2003 at 2 o'clock. That's on a Saturday, and also happens to be Joseph's enlistment date into the military, 141 years ago, March 8, 1862.
I contacted the Sons of The Confederate Veterans and they are holding the memorial services for him and are delighted to do so. Their members will be coming from far and wide to hold these services, even from Texas. They will be in Confederate military uniform, and will also have a gun salute, will also present a Confederate flag to my little grandson. There will also be ladies there from the Confederate Rose organization, and they will place roses upon his grave at end of services. The wreaths that are used by the SCV will not stay, but we can place one of our own there on his gravesite. Now, I'm working on the plaque, the one with additional information about him, to be placed next to his headstone, so that people will know that he's not buried there.
I've done a good bit of research on him, have gotten maps, etc and also done some research into the letters that he wrote. The letter dated April is a correct date, the other letter dated Feb, is incorrect date, and was actually written around first week in July, 1862. I will have some history printed up, to pass out to those who want copies. The musuem at Antietam National Park sent me much information on the 8th La Regt, and a chronological history of the 8th at Sharpsburg, an hourly account of where Joseph's unit was, during the battle, complete with maps. So, I will copy this for everyone to be handed out that day of the services.
Now, I need your address list for the Rutledge family....I'd like to send everyone an invitation to come, it should be a very special occasion and I'm sure that there are many who would like to attend. I really really hope that you can come too, I don't want you to miss this occasion. I will serve refreshments after the services, there at the cemetery. This is usually done as a courtesy for the SVC and of course, later, if anyone wants, the family can also, all meet for supper somewhere in West Monroe or Monroe. I think that the cousins in Baltimore will be coming also.
As soon as you can, I need the addresses and if you have time, I'd like for you to help spread the word about the Confederate memorial services for Joseph. In a sense, I feel that Joseph is finally coming home! This is where he so wanted to be!
   See ya!

Hi Mary,

Per Rachel's book, this is where he fits in:

Edward Rutledge & Ann
  Michael Rutledge & Ann
    Michael Rutledge & Hannah
      William Rutledge & Margaret
        Thomas Rutledge & Elizabeth Hendricks
          Thomas Rutledge & Sarah Gorsuch
Thomas Gorsuch Rutledge & Rebecca J. Fyffe

I'd be interested in having a copy of the photo if you're scanning it in
Mary. I'll file it with my papers, just in case I ever connect! Thanks
for sharing! Would you consider checking that book to see if you find
anything on William Parks, the printer? I have never heard of that book,
but I know that I lost William in Baltimore when he started the
newspaper there. From what I understand he was in partnership with
Benjamin Franklin. I'd really appreciate the lookup! Have a great day..

Hi again,

I have William's will--in it he lists his kids:

Lucinda (McCrary)
Eliza (Miles)
Dudley Adkins (it's spelled twice in will as Adkins, once as Atkins))
Anne (Billbro)
Sarah (Hightower)
Elisabeth (Pierce)
John Foster Rutledge (m. Annie McKemie per Rachel)
Thomas Jonathan Rutledge (m. Caroline Turner)
Mary (Mc[Queen ?] )
Rebecca R. (Boynton)
Margarett

Thomas Jonathan and Rebecca ore from 1st wife, Edna Wills.  Margaret A, John
Foster and Mary Elizabeth are from 3rd wife, Melina Foster.  His last wife,
Jane Horton married him just a few months before his will was written.  His
2nd wife, Elizabeth Partridge was mother to the other children.

Hope this helps!

Benjamin and Mary Ann (Rutledge) Rutledge, came West and arrived at
Quincy April 19, 1855. They soon afterward settled on a farm South of
Columbus and in Gilmer Township. Benjamin Rutledge acquired 255 acres in
that locality and one his pioneer experiences was hauling corn sixteen miles
to a distillery near Quincy and then selling it for 12 1/2 cents a bushel. He
built a comfortable home and a good barn. The home burned but in 1877 the
barn was still standing. Benjamin spent the last six years of his life in
Columbus. He died at Columbus, Sept. 4, 1905 at the age of eighty-four. His
widow survived him until Oct. 1916 and died at the age of eighty six.
In Maryland Benjamin Rutledge had operated a paper mill in company with
his wife's father. The latter was a millwright by trade. Their establishment
was twenty-six miles north of Baltimore. Benjamin's father-in-law, Levi
Rutledge, also came to Illinois and bought land adjoining that of his son and
daughter, and died there at the age of seventy.
Children of Mary Rutledge and Benjamin Rutledge are:
8 i. William Levi3 Rutledge, born 23/Jul/1847 in East & 2nd Ward,
Balt. Co., MD; died 01/Apr/1928 in Columbus, Adams Co., ILL. He married
Marietta Wiseman 28/Feb/1867 in Columbus, Adams Co., ILL.

OTHER:Quincy and Adams Co., ILL History, F896 A, W667 q V.2; Wm. Rutledge
served nine years as road commissioner and was treasurer of the boards all
that time, he served two years as township clerk and was elected and
re-elected assessors for 18 years ; he was a democrat, was identified with
the Christian Church at Columbus for 40 years.

William Levi Rutledge was a boy of eight when his parents came to
Illinois. He grew up on his father's farm and besides his training in the
local schools was well fitted for the tasks of a practical agriculturist. He
was only 19 when he married Miss Mary Etta Wiseman. Mrs. Rutledge was born
near Taylor in Marion Co., MO,

After his marriage William Levi lived on year on the home farm, then
spent seven years in Burton Township. In 1877 he bought 160 acres for $52.00
per acre. At the beginning of his married life he was heavily in debt, and
paid 10 per cent interest. Most people of later generations would have not
believed it possible to raise hogs which sold at 2 1/2 cents a pound and corn
at 16 cents a bushel. However William Levi was a good manager and did
eventually make the farm pay for itself. He and his brother bought land
together but William Levi soon bought out his brother. Mr. Rutledge marketed
between 150 and 200 hogs per year, and frequently turned out a carload of
cattle.

His wife, Mary Etta, died June 11, 1905 after they had been married
nearly forty years.

Rutledge, T. Private 57th C 09 June 1864

The names that are repeated over and over again, for the most part are: John, James, William to name just a few. As I go thru my records I find there are others but for now I want to concentrate on the name Michael. There were a number by this name in the descendants of Edward Rutledge who was transported by John Boering/Boring in 1640. As I went thru all of these I thought it might be helpful to list them. They all started in Balt. Co., MD and from there to York Co., PA and on to OH. Take a look and see if you can fill in the gaps.

Mary Burns was born 20/Jan/1788 in MD, and died Aft. 1830 in Trumbull Co., OH. She married Michael Rutledge Abt. 1800 in Balt. Co., MD, son of Michael Rutledge and Elizabeth. Notes for Mary Burns: It is possible that Mary Burns parents were Andrew and Catherine Burns.

Notes for Michael Rutledge:

CENSUS:1820 Vern. twp, Trumb. Co., OH, Michael Rutledge 2 m 10-16, 2m 16-26, 1 m 26-45, 1 f 16-26 and 1 f 45 up (this is probably Michael who m Eleanor Deason) 1830 Vern twp, Trumb. Co., OH, Michael Rutledge, 1 m 10-15, 1 m 50-60, 1 f 30-40 and 1 f 50-60
Family History has it that Michael Rutledge, married Mary "Polly" Burns in MD and then Married Lydia Emmons. Believe this is wrong and that there was more than one Michael Rutledge from MD and the one who married Lydia Emmons he was son of Michael Rutledge and Elinor Deason. This conclusion was drawn from studying the 1850 and 1860 census of Trumb. Co., OH. Elizabeth Rutledge, reported to be the mother of Michael Rutledge and 5 daughters did not come to Oh until around 1810. There was a Benjamin Rutledge who married Mary Ann Rowe in Balt. Co., MD. and the tax lists gave a Michael in the same Hundreds who had 2 sons and 5 females. For this reason I am placing Michael Rutledge, b abt 1754, wife Elizabeth, as a son of Benjamin. Michael Rutledge, b 1774, MD would be the son of this Michael. Michael Rutledge and Mary Burns had a dau Elizabeth who married Carmi Barnes.
In 1860 Michael Rutledge, age 83, bp MD is living with this couple in Trumb. Co., OH. (The other Michael Rutledge, age 86, is living with James W. Leet & wife Elizabeth, who was the dau of Emmons Rutledge). The Michael Rutledge b 1774 does not appear in the 1850 census.

CENSUS:1820 trumb. Co., OH, Vernon Twp, has 3 Rutledge families listed on same page:
Edmund Rutledge, 3 m 16-26, 1 m 45 and over, 1 f 45 and over
Michael Rutledge 2 m 10-16, 2 m 16-26, 1 m 26-45, 1 f 16-26, 1 f 45 and over.
Elizabeth Rutledge 2 m un 10, 1 m 16-26, 1f un 10, 1 f 16-26, 3 f 26-45 and 1 f 45 and over.
1850, Trumb. Co.m OH - Michael, age 83, & Lydia are living next door to William & Mary in Fowler twp, Trumb. Co.

NOTE:Elizabeth Rutledge who married Carmi Barnes gives her bp as PA. She was born in 1803. If this is true then how can she be the dau of Michael & Polly Burns? It does not appear that they left MD before about 1815? Children of Mary Burns and Michael Rutledge are:
2 i. John2 Rutledge, born 03/Sep/1801 in MD.
+ 3 ii. Elizabeth Rutledge, born 15/Apr/1803 in PA; died 29/Feb/1868 in Trumb. Co., Johnston Twp. OH.
4 iii. James H. Rutledge, born Bet. 1802 - 1804 in MD; died in Trumbull Co., OH. He married Lydia A. Spring Bef. 1858. Notes for James H. Rutledge:
CEMETERY:Orangeville Cem., Vernon twp, (was actually Mercer Co., PA and the cemetery was started in 1802. It was not known till years later. The cemetery is under water and the graves were moved, but many were unmarked. No dates are given for James and Lydia.

This is true of John Rutledge and Ruth Standiford. Once again I have failed to write down who sent me this but the date is March 15th 1875 or 1895, from Taylor, and the first page starts out "Cousin Jenny:
Some time ago one evening ylur moather was asking some questions about the Old Rutledges, shich I answered as well as I could remember." He goes on that he found later a "memo which had a been made by sister Molly in her lifetime from information receifed from Father."
He enclosed the memo with his letter. If you are not of this family do go down to the will of John Rutledge and his wife Ruth Standiford. We talk about Women's Right today, you will be interested in what John left to Ruth. Rachel Demaree Clemons [email protected]

MARYLAND CATHOLICS ON THE FRONTIER
                                  Lori

Maryland was founded as the third English colony in the New World, and it was distinctive for the policy of its founder, Lord Baltimore, religious freedom for all.

This freedom of religion was denied Englishmen during the lifetime of George Calvert, the first Lord Baltimore, whose dream it was to found such a colony. Born about 1580 in Yorkshire, Northern England, he was the son of Leonard and Alicia Crossland Calvert, a family of wealth and social position in that area, and probably a Catholic family.

In spite of his religion, or perhaps because the family had previously abandoned Catholicism in the face of rampant Protestant persecution, he rose to a position of political influence in the court of King James I. He was knighted in 1617 and in 1619 became principal Secretary of State.

In 1624, George Calvert resigned his position and announced that he had become a Roman Catholic. King James rewarded Calvert for past service by asking him Baron of Baltimore. Long interested in the colonization of America, the new Lord Baltimore now turned his talent, energy and considerable fortune to the establishment of a new colony in America.

His first venture was Avalon, a settlement at Ferryland, a harbor community located on the southeastern coast of Newfoundland. He equipped a group of colonists and sent them to the settlement about 1622, and he received a royal charter to the province of Avalon on April 7, 1623.

Because of the severe winter climate, the colony did not prosper and, in spite of Calvert investing a large portion of his fortune in the venture, it failed. He visited the colony in 1628 and abandoned it the next year in favor of Virginia. The Avalon colonists were not welcomed in Virginia, however, where the colony's laws provided for strict Protestant conformity.

Calvert refused to take the required oath of supremacy at Jamestown and planned to return to England. Before he went, however, he explored the Chesapeake Bay and saw unsettled land where the climate was conducive to farming. Upon his return to England, he petitioned King Charles I for a grant of land north of the Virginia colony.

George Calvert never returned to America. Physically and financially weakened by the Avalon experience, and saddened by the loss at sea of his second wife and children--they had remained behind in Virginia after he left and were returning to England on another ship--the first Lord Baltimore died on April 15, 1632.

Cecelius Calvert inherited his father's title--and his dream. Two months after his father died, he received the charter from King Charles, granting the second Lord Baltimore almost regal powers and ownership of all the land
of the colony which he had named Maryland, in honor of the Mother of God. This land was used to attract settlers to the new colony.

Those who would pay their own way to Maryland were granted 100 acres of land, and if they transported servants -- men and women who agreed to indentured service for seven years to pay for their passage--they could obtain 100 more acres. Later, that amount was reduced to 50 acres of land, and the servants, after their term of servitude was over, would also be granted 50 acres of and.

After months of preparation and delays, the first colonists sailed from Cowes, Isle of Wight, England on Nov. 22, 1633, on two ships, the Ark and the Dove. After a frightful, stormy voyage of more than three months, they finally landed on St. Clement's Island about March 10, 1634.

Cecelius Calvert named his brother, Leonard, as governor of the colony, and he stayed in England to administer the colony's affairs there. Gov. Leonard Calvert was an able administrator, serving the colony for 13 devoted years, until his death in 1647. He was especially adept in dealing with the Indians who inhabited the area, the Piscataway and Yaocomico tribes of the Algonquin Indians. It was the Yaocomico village on the banks of the St. Mary's River which the governor purchased in 1634 and renamed St. Mary's City. The colony prospered, in spite of political and religious controversy. In England, there was continued political upheaval and religious intolerance, and that condition was reflected in Maryland. There were repeated efforts to wrest the government from Lord Baltimore. In 1649, the Maryland General Assembly passed an Act of Religious Toleration, which was remarkable because it was passed at a time when there was rampant religious intoleration, both in England and in the other American colonies.

After several abortive attempts at overthrowing the Proprietary government in Maryland, the Protestant revolution of 1689 was successful. It was fomented largely by the non-Catholic colonists of Maryland--about two-thirds of the population of Maryland at that time--who had benefited by the religious toleration policies of Lord Baltimore.

Almost immediately after the take-over occurred, the subjugation of all Catholics began in Maryland. Justices and other public officials, even sheriffs and clerks, were replaced if they were Catholics. Arms and ammunition of most Catholics were confiscated. The very presence of any Catholic in St. Mary's City during the session of the Protestant Associators--the group which was to constitute the ruling body of Maryland for the next two years--was forbidden.

In 1692, an Act was passed which established the Anglican Church as the official church of the colony, and all residents were taxed to support the church. Catholics were excluded from public office, from voting, or even jury duty.

In 1704, the "Act to prevent the Growth of Popery within this Province" not only forbade all works of conversion but also closed all Catholic churches and schools in the province. Most of them still clung to their Faith, however, and practiced their religion privately, in their own homes. Many baptisms and marriages were recorded in the Anglican churches, usually with a notation that they were known Catholics

These restrictions on public worship and other persecution of Catholics continued through the colonial period, which extended to the American Revolution and the Bill of Rights.

Marylanders, both Catholic and Protestant, fought valiantly in the Revolution, and the newly-independent United States used the vast western domain which the English had won in the French and Indian War and ceded to the new American nation at the end of the Revolution, to reward those who served in the Continental Army and Navy. These western lands were also available to persons other than veterans, and between 1789 and 1799, nearly 500,000 acres of undeveloped western land, most of it in what is today the States of Kentucky, Tennessee, Ohio, Indiana and Illinois, was offered as a means to promote settlement of the country's frontier.

Many of these western migrants were Maryland Catholics. Burdened by a century of anti-Catholic bias in Maryland, they sought not only new land but, once again, religious freedom. Even before the greatest migration began in 1789, Maryland Catholics were on the move.

In 1785, a group of southern Maryland residents formed a "Catholic League of Families" and agreed to move to Kentucky as soon as they could settle their affairs in Maryland. John Carroll, Archbishop of Baltimore, promised to send a parish priest if the emigrants settled together.

Another reason for the exodus of people from the Chesapeake Bay area to Kentucky was the depredation suffered by the citizens at the hands of the British during the Revolution. The British fleet, almost constantly present in the Bay, confiscated slaves and stock, sacked homes and literally lived off the supplies plundered from the Maryland residents.

Economic reasons also figured in the exodus to Kentucky. Many farmers were ruined by the Revolution and lost their lands because they could not pay their debts. They saw migration to Kentucky as a way out of their economic woes.

St. Mary's County, alone, lost nearly 3,000 persons to the westward migration between 1790 and 1810. Most of these people went to that area of north-central Kentucky which now comprises Washington, Nelson, Marion and Hardin counties.

Because most of these people were Catholics, this area of Kentucky is known, even today, as the Kentucky Holy Lands.

I'm a new list member & also new to e-mail - so please be patient with me. I have enjoyed reading the list.

My gr gr gr grandfather was Levi Rutledge born in MD ca. 1 Aug. 1803 died 10 Feb 1874 Gilmer Twp. Adams Co. Illinois. He married Elizabeth Bailey who was born in PA. & died 3 Jan 1884 Adams Co. IL supposedly dau of Wm. Bailey ( I have not been able to prove that). Their children were:

Mary Ann Rutledge b. 15 Jan 1831 York Co. PA d, 20 Oct 1916 Smithfield, Neb. married 27 Aug. 1846 in Baltimore Co. MD to Benjamin Rutledge son of William Rutledge & Sarah Cooper. (Mary Ann & Benjamin my gr gr grandparents)

William H. Rutledge b. 1834 MD d. 1906 Adams Co. IL m. 8 April 1858 Adams Co. IL to Susan Elizabeth Peden.

Adam Rutledge b. 1835 MD d. 5 Jan 1911 Adams Co. IL m. 19 Nov 1857 Adams Co. IL Ann E. Nichols.

Margaret C. Rutledge b. 1941 MD d. 1911 ___ m. 24 Sept 1857 Adams Co. IL Abraham Baker.

Sarah E. Rutledge b. 1845 MD d. 1881 Adams Co. IL m. 25 Oct 1860 Adams Co. IL to William Rutledge son of William Rutledge & Sarah Cooper.

Amanda J. Rutledge b. 1849 MD d. __ m. 7 Feb 1867 Adams Co. IL to Lewis D. Baker.

The 1850 census of Balt. Co. MD has Levi listed as a millwright. On a 1850 Baltimore Co. map there is a L. Rutledge North of White Hall . Levi is mentioned in Wm. Bull's will written in 1822 as "a young man living with me". I have not been able to find the marriage of Levi & Elizabeth or their parents or why he was living with Wm. Bull. Other sources used are Marriage records, Church records, Birth & Death records, Cemetery records, and probate records of Adams Co. IL as well as family records.

Does anyone have any information on this family? Is anyone a descendant? Any help would be appreciated. We are always ready to share any information we have. Hopefully by sharing pieces the whole Rutledge puzzle will be seen. Thank you for your time. Donna in rainy Oregon [email protected]

Can some one help me on this.  I have a map of part of Maryland, "From Rayville to Maryland Line along the Middle York Road (Middletown RD.), Old York Roadand The Great York Road. , Jan 1986, by George J. Horvoth, Jr, Historiographer, drawn by Robert B. Wilkinson, Cartogropher"  The Great York Road and The Baltimore and Yorktown Turnpike (1805-1810) appear to be the same.  Just east of this road is a piece of property "Rutledge's Labor" Thomas Rutledge, 1787, 495 acres. You will see below that "Rutledge's Labor"
is named twice.  Thomas gives land to John C. his brother.

It is quite a puzzle. Would appreciate help..  I am still trying to prove that Abraham Rutledge named in the 1790 census, named as s/o of William.

but I'd rather give someone something they already have than not give them
something they need.

Emmons Rutledge, s/o Michael and Lydia has been one of my "brick walls". There have so many different stories about him. Linda Y Butler, archives Assistant to DepauW University has been so kind and sent me copies of Emmons Rutledge's obituaries from the Methodist Church Conference. Emmons was apparently a well thought of minister. The article gave his birth date as 2/Nov/1805 West Salem Twp, Mercer Co., PA. This was new information. It did not give parents or wives or children.

Jane:I only copied the outline, not the documentation as it is a very long list. William Richard Rutledge married Elizabeth William is Greenbriar Co., WV. the family migrated to Fulton Co., ILL. this is one of my Brick Walls. I believe that they came from Maryland but no proof. I have all kinds of documentation after they went to ILL. Part of the family went to McDonough Co., ILL. This is another reason I believe they came from Maryland. About the same time that William went to Fulton Co., ILL, another family, Peter Rutledge and wife Laura moved there from OH. For a long time now, I have tried to find if Edward Rutledge was an indenture servant. I can find no place where he owned land. He was transported by John Boering in 1670, The following land transactions names some servants but Edward was not listed as a servant. The John Boring/Boering listed along with his wife, Mary, was s/o John Boring, Sr. Can anyone add any new info on the Boering family? Bless you Rachel. We have finally found Edward and Fannies people thanks to your careful research and desire to share information. This has taken years and it's very interesting that Joshua Smiley Rutledge deserted his wife Charlotte Walters and left her with 8 children as did his his grandson Edward Llewellyn.I have  Joshua listed as James Rutlidge and Fannies birth as Dec 24 1868 not 1867 on her death certificate.Does anyone on the the list descend from this family?Do I have cousins out there? And do you know anymore about their origins in Maryland?
 in Maryland?

Rachel,

I will order your second book.

My direct lineage is the following:Jean Ann Ables - b 1930 daughter of Olynthus Terrell Ables 1899-1970 and Ruth Kerr 1899 - 1988 who was the son of Naomi Elizabeth Rutledge 1870-1936 and James Winfield Ables 1860-1944 who was the daughter of Rev. John Joslin Rutledge 1836-1922 and Mary Margaret Norris 1841-1891 who was the son of William Manley Rutledge 1808-1866 and Nancy Ball Lawson 1816-1900 who was the son of Joseph Rutledge II 1778-1859 and Winnie Joslin 1783-1840 who was the son of Joseph Rutledge 1749-1833 and Elizabeth Speer 1751 who was the son of John Rutledge - 1774 and ???? (Eleanor) who was the son of Isaac Rutledge died 1760 (PA) and Catherine

John & Terry:  You asked if you had cousins "out there".  I am sure you do
but so far they have not turned up.  In a round about way you and I are
related.  Joshua Smiley Rutledge goes back to 1670 when Edward Rutledge was
transported to MD by a John Boring.  My ancestor is Peter Rutledge, born 1760
in Balt. Co., MD.
I think I know who his father was but not definite proof.  He almost has to
be the son of  Abraham Rutledge, son of William & Margaret.  Peter named his
first child, Abraham W Rutledge.  I wish I knew what the W. stands for.
My two books covers everything that I could find on the descendants of Edward
Rutledge, born 1670.  The books are in two parts.  Book1 starts with Edward
Rutledge and book two starts with my ancestor Peter Rutledge.
I would apreciate it if you could send me what you have on your family.
I thought when I finished Book 2 that I would not work on my Rutledge any
more but that was just daydreaming.  I am addicted!

Hi all!

Does anyone out there have a listing of  the children of Michael Rutledge
b. ca 1740/1744 in Baltimore Maryland & Elinor Deason Rutledge.  From what
I understand, they may have six or seven children.  Does any one out there
have any more information?
Thanks!Tina From:

Saw your posting and wondered if you have any data on the couple named
Penelope and Abraham Rutledge, purported to be cousins.  Their daughter,
Penelope, married Thomas Kelso and was my ggggrandmother.

My cousin and I are researching the Kelso-Rutledge line and have arrived at
Baltimore in our quest.

Susanne Gravendijk Wirth, d. of Janet Tole, d. of Amanda Kelso, d. of John A.
Kelso, s. of Thomas Kelso, s. of Thomas Kelso and Penelope Rutledge, married
in Baltimore.  Our Thomas served in the Revolutionary War as a teenager.
Penelope was daughter of the cousins, Penelope and Abraham Rutledge of
Maryland.

Thank you for your time.

Book-- Quincy and Adams County, History and Representative Men, by David F. Wilcox, Volume I -- pg 956 --
Benjamin and Mary Ann (Rutledge) Rutledge, came West and arrived at Quincy April 19, 1855. They soon afterward settled on a farm South of Columbus and in Gilmer Township. Benjamin Rutledge acquired 255 acres in that locality and one his pioneer experiences was hauling corn sixteen miles to a distillery near Quincy and then selling it for 12 1/2 cents a bushel. He built a comfortable home and a good barn. The home burned but in 1877 the barn was still standing. Benjamin spent the last six years of his life in Columbus. He died at Columbus, Sept. 4, 1905 at the age of eighty-four. His widow survived him until Oct. 1916 and died at the age of eighty six.
In Maryland Benjamin Rutledge had operated a paper mill in company with his wife's father. The latter was a millwright by trade. Their establishment was twenty-six miles north of Baltimore. Benjamin's father-in-law, Levi Rutledge, also came to Illinois and bought land adjoining that of his son and daughter, and died there at the age of seventy.
Children of Mary Rutledge and Benjamin Rutledge are: 8 i. William Levi3 Rutledge, born 23/Jul/1847 in East & 2nd Ward, Balt. Co., MD; died 01/Apr/1928 in Columbus, Adams Co., ILL. He married Marietta Wiseman 28/Feb/1867 in Columbus, Adams Co., ILL.

Rutledge served nine years as road commissioner and was treasurer of the boards all that time, he served two years as township clerk and was elected and re-elected assessors for 18 years ; he was a democrat, was identified with the Christian Church at Columbus for 40 years.
William Levi Rutledge was a boy of eight when his parents came to Illinois. He grew up on his father's farm and besides his training in the local schools was well fitted for the tasks of a practical agriculturist. He was only 19 when he married Miss Mary Etta Wiseman. Mrs. Rutledge was born near Taylor in Marion Co., MO,
After his marriage William Levi lived on year on the home farm, then spent seven years in Burton Township. In 1877 he bought 160 acres for $52.00 per acre. At the beginning of his married life he was heavily in debt, and paid 10 per cent interest. Most people of later generations would have not believed it possible to raise hogs which sold at 2 1/2 cents a pound and corn at 16 cents a bushel. However William Levi was a good manager and did eventually make the farm pay for itself. He and his brother bought land together but William Levi soon bought out his brother. Mr. Rutledge marketed between 150 and 200 hogs per year, and frequently turned out a carload of cattle. His wife, Mary Etta, died June 11, 1905 after they had been married nearly forty years.
