Alabama

I am fairly new to researching my family history, so I do not know if this
is significant or not. I was in the Jacksonville City Cemetery in Jacksonville
Alabama this past week and found something interesting. John H. Forney was a
confederate general who is buried in the cemetery. Next to his tombstone is a
stone that is carved to look like an open book. On one side it says "Septima
Sexta Middleton Rutledge, wife on John H. Forney" and it has the dates but I
can't remember them. On the other side of the open book it says
"great-granddaughter of Edward Rutledge, signer of the Declaration of Independence."
So far I have not been able to link my Rutledge family to the signers,
but I do have family buried in the same cemetery and others in the same area.

I hope this is helpful to someone.

COBB COUNTY GEORGIA:

Hello Angel,

I believe I am a member of Henry Lewis Rutledge's family. My great-great
grandfather was Bryant Spencer Rutledge, an older brother of Henry Lewis.

I have been researching my Bryant's line for about 10 years and I live in
Gwinnett Co., GA and was raised in Cobb Co., GA. But, I unfortunately have not
done the actual research for the documentation to say they were  diffidently
brothers. I would say what I have found and been told by  others would make it
seem so. But as we all know, "seems so" just doesn't quite  get it around
here. But, I will gladly share with you what I have and maybe I'll  get around to
proving those facts soon. It just hasn't been at the top of my  priority list.

This is what I believe to be true - not all  facts within have been verified
with documentation.

I suspect "most" of the Rutledges in the Atascosa County Cemetery
descend from William Calvin Rutledge. W. C. was born in SC about 1792,
and married Rachel Williams in GA or AL (Dallas County?). Their sons
were Garrett M., William R., John J., and Elisha C., all born AL. These
Rutledges came to TX in the early 1850's.

Garrett M. Rutledge (1824-1921) reportedly died in Fairview, Wilson
 County, TX, and was buried in Atascosa County; William R. (1835-1919);
John J. (1831-1920) died in Poteet, Atascosa County, TX; Elisha C.
(1840-1915) died in Zavala County, TX.

Hi Listers,

First, let me say that I am not 100% sure that I descend from any person(s)
with the surname RUTLEDGE. I am about 100% sure that I descend from a
Harriet (or Harriett) whose sister was Elizabeth RUTLEDGE. Whether Elizabeth
was a RUTLEDGE by birth or marriage is unknown to me. However, I have found
no evidence that she was married. Moreover, it would seem from her will (see
below) that she remained unmarried, as evidenced by the fact that the only
other persons named in her will were her sister (Harriet) and her nephew
(Thomas G. Lemaster).

I am looking for a family of RUTLEDGEs in the Chambers County, Alabama area
who had daughters Elizabeth (b. 1805 +/- 5yrs., d. bet. 20 Jan 1870 & 25 Aug
1873) and Harriett (b. 1812 +/- 3yrs., d. AFT. 1880, m. _____ Lemaster). Can
anyone help me?

Don, they are talking about Fayette Co., AL. I have already sent Pam the

Playing catch up today....

I have a George Bell who married Clementine
Rutledge b. 1861 (dau of John A
Rutledge). I'm sure that is not related to the
Bells of Fayette Co, but I
thought I'd throw that out because it does fit the
subject line very well....

Don I would like to post my brickwall, James Rutledge. I know you are covered up with request right now, so there is no hurry. Mike Rutledge, Boaz AL JamesRutledge. Born 11 Nov 1802 in NC. Died Nov 1875 in Cherokee Co. AL. Occupation farmer. Education read & writes. He married Mary A. Gilland, daughter of unknown Gilland & unknown. Born 22 Apr 1818 in NC. Died 31 Aug 1901 in Chattooga Co, GA. Religion Baptist. On census records for James I found in 1850 a Thomas Rutledge born 1810 in SC was living in the same household. This matches with the 1840 census for the James Rutledge living next door, which had a male age 20-30. I assume Thomas was the brother of James. In the 1860 census I found a Simpson A. P. Rutledge age 80 living in the same household. The 1860 census records I looked at were in the Gadsden Library. The card appeared to have Simpson as age 80. I checked the State Archives in Montgomery in April 2000. The archives had Simpson listed as a child age 8. This could be correct, as all the birth dates of the children would be correct. BUT Simpson was not listed in the family Bible as a child. In the 1840 census records for Cherokee Co. James was listed at house/land page# 124-14 there was also a James on this page, 124, (next house listed) that appeared to be his father and a woman that could be his mother. They were listed as dates of birth between 1780 and 1770. Also listed at #132 was Wilson Rutledge and his family who later moved to Ark. Another brother appears to be John Rutledge who also moved to Ark. I have no direct proof of the relationships of what I believe to be 4 brothers and their father and mother living in Cherokee Co. in the 1840 census. (James, Thomas, John, and Wilson with their father James Rutledge and mother Sarah Willis) In the 1850 census records for Cherokee Co. AL I found Thomas Rutledge living in the same household with James. I can only conclude that he was a brother of James due to the ages. Thomas was listed as 40 years old so his date of birth would have been cira 1810. James received a land paten in Cherokee Co., Alabama along with John Parks, William S. Pitts, and John Miller. They were on the land prior to June of 1838 as documented by statements signed by persons living in the area. Signed by persons that I believed are keys to finding the Rutledge family before moving to Cherokee Co. Signatures on documents for James Rutledge include John Rutledge, James Rutledge, John Miller, John Parks, & William S. Pitts.

Pitts, Parks, Miller, and Rutledge located their land in Section 34, township 8, Range 11. James was residing on the land 22, June 1838 and cultivated 10 or 12 acres on it. Signed John Rutledge and (Joshua?) Smith.
John Rutledge located his land in Southwest quarter of Section 27, Township 8, Range 11. He was there on February 22, 1838, was residing on the same on June 22, 1838, and cultivated 10 acres on the same. Signed by John S. Wilson and John Parsons. Wilson Rutledge living in same district 1840 census page 132, James and James A page 124. This section of land is located north of Gaylesville, Cherokee County AL north of Mill Creek and Oak Bowery Church. The section joins the Chattooga County GA. state line. I visited the courthouse in Cherokee County AL and asked one of the clerks to run a copy of the map for the above land claims. I was directed to the home of Mr. Cecil Drake, who now lives on the land owned by James Rutledge in 1838.

Wilson Rutledge, dob 1803 NC was living on Monroe County TN in 1830 along with James Rutledge Page 80. In the household of James born NC, was 1male and 1 female age 50-60, 1male 10-15, 2 males 15-20, and 1 female 10-15. Based on the census, names of children and location of the families. I believe the males listed in James household on the 1830 Monroe TN census were Thomas DOB cira. 1810 NC, Thomas living with James A dob 1802 NC on the 1850 Cherokee CO AL census; John dob 1810 NC. There was a female that I have not found any reference to, and possibly another brother. I am not positive James A was living in the home of his father in 1830.
John Rutledge was married to Rebecca Parsons and later moved to AR.
On the 1840 census record for Cherokee County AL it appears that the James Rutledge from Monroe County TN and his wife are living either on the same farm on next to my James A and his family. Also on the 1840 census Wilson Rutledge is next to William S. Pitts and John Miller only a couple of houses away is William Varnell.

Curious- I have info on a WILSON RUTLEDGE who died in Stoddard County,
Missouri. I believe he was the son of Emmanuel Rutledge and Sarah Kate
Wilson, and the brother of my g grandmother, Rebecca Rutledge, who also died
in Stoddard County. The info on Wilson is on the Stoddard County page of
Missouri at the USGenweb site (or, rather, its replacement). It is in the
Administration of Estates or Probate link on the county page, and is from
official court records...

The death notices were for the sons of the Wilson Rutledge from NC,TN,AL,AR.
This was some information I had received from a peson following Wilson's

Cherokee County, Alabama

They had the following children: 4i.John W Rutledge: Born 19 Jul 1840 in Cherokee Co. AL.
5ii.Sarah C. Rutledge: Born 17 Dec 1838 in Cherokee Co. AL. Died Before 1875
6iii.William H. Rutledge: Born 8 Jul 1842 in Cherokee Co AL. Died 8 Oct 1
7iv.James Andrew Rutledge: Born 8 Jul 1842 in Cherokee Co AL. Died 8 Oct 1
8v.Lidia C. Rutledge Terrance: Born 4 Jan 1847 in Cherokee Co, AL.
9vi.Thomas Burton Rutledge: Born 2 Sep 1849 in Cherokee Co. AL
10vii.Andrew Jackson (Henry) Rutledge: Born 4 Oct 1852 in Cherokee Co, AL.
11viii.Joel H. Rutledge: Born 26 Mar 1855 in Cherokee Co, AL. Died 29 Sep 1875

Below are the first 2 pages of Houston Odell Rutledge book. I hope some of you find some answers. This is everything on the background of this family. Marie

A Record of John Rutledge and his descendents

by Houston Odell Rutledge & Sybil King Rutledge

John Rutledge, b 15 Sep 1810 in NC; d 30 Jul 1880 in Jamestown, Ark, buried in the old Jamestown cemetery near his wife, the rock marker is now missing from his grave. A sketch of this family now in possession of a Mr. R. E . Moore of Pine Bluff, Ark, says he was born at Shiloh Ford of the Atkins, NC. I believe we will find that he was born in Duplin Co, NC. He is the son of James & Sarah (Willis) Rutledge. James d 7 Dec 1848 and Sarah rutledge d 14 Feb 1846, these dates and names are the earliest records in the Gilbert Calloway Rutledge Bible, now owned by Mr Vernon Varnell of Batesville, Ark. The sketch listed her as Sarah Willis and listed James' father as Edward Rutledge. There were errors in the sketch, some had been corrected by Gilbert Calloway Rutledge.

I have records that trace Edward Rutledge and his wife, Sarah (Armstrong) Rutledge from a will filed in Augusta Co, VA, on back to Ireland, however, we do not have proof at this time, due to lack of birth date and place for our James Rutledge, father of the above John Rutledge. These records were donated by Mr J Frank Berry of Lewis, Iowa, who does belong to the family of the well known Ann Rutledge that supposedly was engaged to Abraham Lincoln.

John Rutledge married 20 Jan 1835, Miss Rebecca Parsons, born 11 May 1814-1815 Tenn; died 5 Aug 1860 Jamestown, AR., buried in the old Jamestown Cemetery, has a stone headstone on her grave. She was the daughter of Mr Thomas Parsons and Mrs Susan (Madice) Parsons. The Bible gives the year of her birth as 1814 and her headstone has 1815.

We find John & Rebecca living in the section of Alabama that became Cherokee Co in 1836, they were there in 1835 before it was named. The 1850 Census shows John & Rebecca and five of their children, one child had died and was not listed. His name was spelled Rulage instead of our way of spelling Rutledge on that census record. Mr Legrand Dean was also listed as a helper on John's farm.

The courthouse in Cherokee Co, Alabama, burned in 1882, however, I did obtain the Census Record from Mrs. Robert Neville Mann in Cedar Bluff, Alabama, a genealogist.

John & Rebecca owned a large farm and the children helped with the farm work. When the oldest son was 17 years old, this whole family left Cherokee Co and came to Arkansas, settling around Alderbrook which was later names Jamestown, Ar. Some of the descendents still recall the stories their parents passed down to them about John owning slaves on his farm or plantation in Alabama and that he would sell his 14 & 15 year old slave boys. They left Alabama and arrived in Arkansas in 1852.

A John Rutledge served in the civil War under Capt Samuel R Fetzer and was on the muster roll of the members of this company when they were surrendered on 11 May 1865 and listed him as living in Galloway, Arkansas. References to the Independent Co Chronicle, Vol VI # 2, page 34 & 43.

Ten children were born of this marriage, as follows:

1.. Gilbert Calloway Loranzo Huston Rutledge

2.. Sarah Jane Rutledge

3.. Francis Marion Rutledge

4.. Letha Emily Rutledge

5.. Columbus Knox Polk Rutledge

6.. Amanda L Rutledge

7.. Jane Rutledge

8.. William H Rutledge

9.. John Gard Rutledge

10.. Daniel C Rutledge

I think with all those Rutledges living in Chattooga county at the same ime( Bryant S. my James and William A) there has to be some connection. All these families lived within 10 miles of each other. They at least knew each other. The problem is I don't. Mike Rutledge, Boaz AL

This is a letter explaining some of the thoughts about Wilson's family. My interest in Wilson is that I believe Wilson to a brother of my ggg-grandfather James A. (I HAVE NO PROOF OF THE RELATIONSHIP) Their families lived at the same place at the same time, BUT the James who is supposed to be the father of Wilson and John Rutledge lived with my James in Cherokee Co. AL. Mike Rutledge, Boaz AL WILSON (W.A.) RUTLEDGE Born ca 1803) in NC Died 21 Feb. 1863 of typhoid fever while A POW-CSA, Camp Douglas, IL. MARRIED TWICE: (1) md ca 1829 possibly in Monroe Co. TN. She has not been identified; no marriage record found. ISSUE: 3, possibly 4, sons, and 1 daughter. 2) md 1840 (per 1850 census taker), to a woman named Jane who possibly was Jane Nations. A Pate descendant said she was ' referred to as "Grandma Nations Rutledge" by older members of the family which would indicate that she was not their grandmother by blood. ISSUE: 2, possibly 3, sons and 3 daughters. Again, no marriage record has been found. Early Monroe Co. TN and Cherokee Co. AL are "burned" counties. WILSON RUTLEDGE owned 320 acres in Independence Co. AR in 1859- BY 1860 census he was in Saline Co. AR. After the start of the Civil War he joined. a CSA unit in Saline Co. where he is shown on the roster of Co. B, Arkansas 1st (Crawford's) Cavalry as Wilson Rutledge, Sgt. The original CSA record is filed as "W.A. Rudley." He was taken prisoner on 11 Jan. 1863 at Arkansas Post, AR and imprisoned at Camp Douglas, IL where he died of typhoid fever on 21 Feb. 1863- There were no muster roll cards dated prior to his capture so the date of enlistment is unknown. (Buried as W.A. Rudley in Oak Woods Cemt. Chicago IL, Confederate monument) If JANE RUTLEDGE, wife #2, followed an old custom, then her first daughter, Martha, may have been named for the deceased wife. HUGH RUTLEDGE named a daughter MARTHA LUCINDA. Could this have been for his mother and sister? There are many JOHN RUTLEDGE descendants in Independence Co. AR and the chronicler of this line shows my (Lucinda) Jane Rutledge as his daughter even though she is not listed in the family Bible. My research has proved this to be incorrect. John Rutledge possibly was her uncle. Jane may have made her home with this family between the 1850 census and, her marriage to Tom Pate in 1859- WILSON RUTLEDGE'S SON, JAMES CALVIN, known as CALVIN, was born ca 1840; the year Wilson married his second wife. The fact that Calvin was enumerated with Tom and Jane R. Pate in the 1860 Indep Co. AR census makes me wonder whether he was a son by the first wife. However, in 1870 he is living with his family adjacent to Ja(i)ne Rutledge and her children in Jefferson Co. AR. Calvin Rutledge also served in the CSA but in a different outfit than Wilson. As a side note, Columbus (Lum) Knox Polk Rutledge, son of the above John Rutledge and Rebecca Parsons, married Mollie Pate, sister to my Grandfather Tom Pate. One of John's sons, G.C. (Gilbert Calloway Lorenzo Huston Rutledge) bears a striking resemblance to a photo of Hugh Rutledge. Oh, that other mothers were as careful in recording their children's full names as was Rebecca! As compiled October 1994 by Jimmie Jean Pate Bowman, granddaughter of Thomas H. Pate and Lucinda Jane Rutledge. Jimmie Jean Pate Bowman, b 8-23-25 Newport, AR, 8th child

Rutledge, W. S., M. D., of Ruston, La., is numbered among the leading members of the medical profession in his locality. He was born in Auburn, Ala., April 30, 1881, and is a scion of an old and widely known family. His ancestors took an active part in the Revolutionary war, and he is a direct descendant of Edward Rutledge, a signer of the Declaration of Independence. His paternal grandfather John F. Rutledge, a native of South Carolina, was a wealthy planter in Alabama, and is known to have owned the ground on which Auburn college now stands. The grandmother is still living, and is the mother of 9 children. William Jefferson Bickerstaff, his maternal grandfather, when the dark cloud of the Civil war cast its gruesome shadow over the country, answered the call of duty, and enlisted his services in the cause of the Confederacy. In the field he maintained the prestige of the name he bore, and proved himself a valiant and intrepid soldier. Through his gallant service be was promoted to the rank of a captain, and fought continually until his untimely death at the battle of Murfreesboro. The subject of this review is a son of John F. and Mattie P. (Bickerstaff) Rutledge, the former being engaged in the coal business at Auburn, where he still resides with his wife. He is a graduate of Auburn college, class of 1877. Dr. Rutledge acquired his elementary education in the high school at Columbus, Ga., and after completing the high school curriculum, entered Auburn college, where he graduated in pharmacy in 1900. He began active practice of his profession at Selma, Ala., and later went into the drug business for himself at Opelika, Ala., which he conducted very successfully until 1906, when he gave up this work to study medicine. He entered the University of Alabama, where he remained for 3 years, and graduated with high honors in 1909. After his graduation he located in Ruston, La., where he first began the practice of medicine, and where he has built up an excellent practice. He is regarded as a progressive citizen, and a representative member of his profession. He is president of the parish board of health, secretary of the parish medical society, third vice-president of the Louisiana Medical society, member of the American Medical association, and the Southern Medical association. He is affiliated fraternally with the Benevolent and Protective Order of Elks, lodge No. 1134, of which he is Leading Knight, and is trustee of the Knights of Pythias, Commander of Woodmen of the World, Clerk of Columbian Woodmen, Commander of the Maccabees, at Ruston; also a member of the Knights of Khorassen, at Mobile. He is a stockholder in several large enterprises. May 20, 1906, he was united in marriage to Miss Esmeralda O'Bannon, of Ruston, a daughter of B. P. and Theodosia (Hay) O'Bannon, the former being a planter and a native of Louisiana. He passed away in 1907, which was 10 years after the death of his wife. Mr. And Mrs. Rutledge have no children. http://searches.rootsweb.com/cgi-bin/ifetch2?/u1/data/la+index+535858006565+F Richard, My name is Jeanne. Hello to the "L" I have been busy as of late and did not have time to do much genealogy. I have subscribed again and like the rest of you I have not gotten much mail. Well here comes some information for you to read. I did not do the research on this, it is some information I have had for 7-8 years. I received this information from a Rutledge family member in Shreveport LA. I recently sent to Rosalyn after reading her information on AR . Mike Rutledge, Boaz AL __________________________________ ITIDEPENDENCE COUNTY ARKANSAS HIST. SOCIETY CHRONICLE JANUARY 1967 VOL VIII NO. 2. THE JOHN RUTLEDGE FAMILY 1852 Settlers of Independence County by Mrs. Sybil King Rutledge Mrs. Rutledge, a native of Conroe, Texas, and now on active duty in the army at Ft. Sam Houston. San Antonio, Texas, is married to Houston Odell Rutledge who was born at Oil Trough in independence County and who is now serving with the army in Vietnam as first sergeant of his company. He Is the son of Cecil Rutledge of Newark and a great- grandson of Gilbert Calloway Rutledge, Sr. Mrs. Rutledge and her husband have been collecting information on the Rut- ledge fancily history since 1962. Her address is 228 Burnet St., Apt. I-C, San Antonio, Texas 78202. John Rutledge who brought his family to Independence County, Arkansas, to live in 1852, was born September 15, 1810, at Shiloh Ford of Atkins, North Carolina, the son of James Rutledge and his wife, Sarah. He married January 20, 1835, Miss Rebecca Parsons who was born Mav 11 in either 1814 or 1815 in Tennessee. Her father was Thomas Parsons and her mother was Susan Madice Parsons. John's father, James Rutledge, died December 7, 1848, and his mother, Sarah, whose maiden name we do not know, February 14, 1846. A historical sketch, which is still in the family, shows his mother's maiden name was Willis. However, there are some errors in the sketch and we have not found further information to bear this out. This sketch shows that the father of James Rutledge was Edward,-Rutledge, and that Edward's father was John Rutledge. We have not gone that far back on this record search. John's place of marriage is not recorded in the Rutledge family Bible, which now is in the possession of Vernon Marshall Varnell who is retired and living at 1377 Lawrence Street in Batesville. However, in 1835 they were living in the section of Alabama that became Cherokee County in 1836. They lived on a large farm, raising all, or most all, of the products that were consumed on the farm by family and slaves. John had a helper, Legrand Dean,

(This is the second page) Legrand, Dean, who assisted with the work on the farm and the children hired as they became large enough. It was the custom of the Rutledge family for each adult member to tell his children family history, and according to the information passed to us: there was a close bond of kinship in the family. One story, which has been passed from generation to generation, relates to the sale of young slaves raised on John's farm. Their leaving the farm was a sad occasion, and as might be expected resulted in weeping and wailing on part of the older slaves. We have not been able to learn why John decided to move his family to Arkansas in 1852. However, they left the grave of their little daughter 'Sarah Jane, and traveled to Independence County, at or near Jamestown. The 1850 census record of Cherokee County, Alabama, shows our John Rutledge as "John Rulage", a farmer 39 years of' age and his birth state as North Carolina. He was listed as family No. 685-685, and his wife, Rebecca, and the names of five of his children are given. This 1851 census record shows a "James Ruttage", age 47, farmer, born in North Carolina, wife, Mary A., and five children. Living with them was "Thomas Ruttage", age 49, a farmer born in North Carolina. We have no proof of the relationship of this family to our John Rutledge. But there is room for speculation on the possibility that they were brothers. James gave his children names that art common in our family. The courthouse of Cherokee, County, Alabama, burned in 1882, however, we located a genealogist who had a copy of the census records. The Chronicle, Vol. ' VI, No. 2, pages 34 and 43, lists John Rutledge of Galloway, Arkansas, as a Confederate soldier in Captain Samuel R. Fetzer's company and he was on the muster roll when they surrendered Many 11, 186.'i. John Rutledge was also listed in Dr. L. A. Dickinson's medical account ledger for 1869. Chronicle, Vol. VII, No. 4, page 38) John's death occurred July 30, 1880. He was buried in the old Jamestown cemetery; the headstone which

Rutledge, W. S., M. D., of Ruston, La., is numbered among the leading
members of the medical profession in his locality. He was born in Auburn,
Ala., April 30, 1881, and is a scion of an old and widely known family.
His ancestors took an active part in the Revolutionary war, and he is a
direct descendant of Edward Rutledge, a signer of the Declaration of
Independence. His paternal grandfather John F. Rutledge, a native of South
Carolina, was a wealthy planter in Alabama, and is known to have owned the
ground on which Auburn college now stands. The grandmother is still
living, and is the mother of 9 children. William Jefferson Bickerstaff,
his maternal grandfather, when the dark cloud of the Civil war cast its
gruesome shadow over the country, answered the call of duty, and enlisted
his services in the cause of the Confederacy. In the field he maintained
the prestige of the name he bore, and proved himself a valiant and intrepid
soldier. Through his gallant service be was promoted to the rank of a
captain, and fought continually until his untimely death at the battle of
Murfreesboro. The subject of this review is a son of John F. and Mattie P.
(Bickerstaff) Rutledge, the former being engaged in the coal business at
Auburn, where he still resides with his wife. He is a graduate of Auburn
college, class of 1877. Dr. Rutledge acquired his elementary education in
the high school at Columbus, Ga., and after completing the high school
curriculum, entered Auburn college, where he graduated in pharmacy in 1900.
He began active practice of his profession at Selma, Ala., and later went
into the drug business for himself at Opelika, Ala., which he conducted
very successfully until 1906, when he gave up this work to study medicine.
He entered the University of Alabama, where he remained for 3 years, and
graduated with high honors in 1909. After his graduation he located in
Ruston, La., where he first began the practice of medicine, and where he
has built up an excellent practice. He is regarded as a progressive
citizen, and a representative member of his profession. He is president of
the parish board of health, secretary of the parish medical society, third
vice-president of the Louisiana Medical society, member of the American
Medical association, and the Southern Medical association. He is
affiliated fraternally with the Benevolent and Protective Order of Elks,
lodge No. 1134, of which he is Leading Knight, and is trustee of the
Knights of Pythias, Commander of Woodmen of the World, Clerk of Columbian
Woodmen, Commander of the Maccabees, at Ruston; also a member of the
Knights of Khorassen, at Mobile. He is a stockholder in several large
enterprises. May 20, 1906, he was united in marriage to Miss Esmeralda
O'Bannon, of Ruston, a daughter of B. P. and Theodosia (Hay) O'Bannon, the
former being a planter and a native of Louisiana. He passed away in 1907,
which was 10 years after the death of his wife. Mr. And Mrs. Rutledge have
no children.

Richard,

My name is Jeanne. Mike Rutledge and I have just discovered that we are both
descendents of Alfred Henry. Maybe together we can find out about Joseph Sr.
By the way, I'm in the northern part of the central coast in Santa Cruz.

Hi Jean...

I saw your post seeking info on Thomas Rutledge and a comment that a Thomas
Henry Rutledge moved to Collin Co., TX. and is buried in the Wilson Cemetery.
You also mention some Rutledges buried in Wilson Cemetery that you are
seeking add'l info on.... I think I may have info that will help you...The
folks you mention are, I believe, descendants of John M. Rutledge. These
Rutledges were from Cumberland Co. KY, and had strong ties to TN. They moved
later in life to Collin Co. TX and are buried in Wilson Cemetery.

We need to check dates of birth and death since several had the same names,
but I believe Hamilton C. Rutledge was a son of John M Rutledge. Ham was
born on Jan 11, 1848 in KY. He died Jan 22, 1934 in McKinney, Collin Co.,
TX. B.R. Rutledge is, I believe, Burley Rutledge, son of William and Alcey
(Willis) Rutledge.

At this point, I believe this William Rutledge was a son of John M Rutledge,
but I lack smoking gun proof on this point. William came from Cumberland Co
KY. He married Alcey Willis in Celina, TN on Feb 23, 1848. I believe Alcey
had a brother named Burley Willis, who served with her husband William in the
same company during the Civil War. Burley gave affadavits to help William
and Alcey prove claims for pensions, and I would assume they named their son
after Burley Willis. Most of my info on Wm and Alcey comes from war pension
files, obits, and info from descendants of this family who live in TX.

I have more on this family, and would be curious to see more on your Collin
Co. folk.. The ones I have data on had strong TN ties (Wm and Burly Willis
served in a TN Cavalry Unit and lots of the Willis family was in TN. One
confusing problem I've noted with county data from southern KY, like
Cumberland, and northern TN counties like Overton, is the Scott Line issue.
Often the data on my kin indicates they moved from KY to TN and back every
census. But it appears what actually happened is the state line moved back
and forth over them as KY and TN argued an error made in a boundry survey..
I'm not sure now that they actually moved at all...

Anyway.. let me know if you'd like more on these folk... I can send you an
attachment with more complete data.

One last point.... do you know if your Collin Co kin had ties to the Joseph
Rutledge Jr line of Walker Co. AL? I'm looking at the probability that John
M Rutledge was a son of Joseph Rutledge Jr.... the elusive "Jack" Rutledge
that is mentioned in Walker Co AL history, but nobody seems to have data
on.... John M went by the name "Jack" or "Jackie" and other clues lead me to
think he may be Jos Jr's son. I'd be interested to know if your folk have AL
ties...it might lead to info that the two groups were related.... John
Rutledge in Oregon

Sorry I mislead you. The Thomas Henry Rutledge buried at Wilson Chapel
is the son of John & Jane Gaw Brown Rutledge. I know this because I
have copies of a letter and 4 post cards written between TH and his
mother Jane Rutledge in Pierce City, Mo. I have his death certificate
and it states he was born in Missiouri in 1850--no parents names were
listed because of a feud between the Browns, Gaws and Rutledges in
Jackson County, TN. Thomas Henry was the youngest son born of that
marriage. I also have a 5X7 photo copy of 5-6 adults that were listed
as children of Jane Gaw B Rutledge at the time of her death. (No date to
confirm the year but about 1874, more or less).

The other Rutledges I mentioned, I took photographs of every Rutledge
headstone and forwarded this information to the Ruts list with a cc to
Ron and Daryl Gardner. It was through them I learned BR's name was
Burley, but since this wasn't my line, I just wanted to let somebody
know of these vast family of Rutledges buried in McKinney's Wilson
Chapel Cemetery.

If you would like for me to send you a copy of the headstones of
particular Rutledge relatives of yours, send me your address and I will
be happy to forward this picture to you!

Walker County Alabama

To Pam in Walker Co. Alabama:

There is a list that you can subscribe to in Walker Co. Alabama. It is
[email protected]. There are a lot of descendants of the Rutledge
family still in Walker Co. Alabama. My Rutledges came out of Walker Co.
Alabama, but none direct with that name. Edmond/Edward had a great-grandson
named James S. Rutledge born March 1885 . I have sent your query on to Floyd
Guthrie who lives in Carbon Hill, Walker Co. Alabama and who is a great
genealogist and knows pretty much the lineage of the Rutledges and side
families there.

Hello,

I do not directly descend from the Rutledge line but these 3 names (Rutledge, Hodges and Lynn) are very much connected. I have a copy of James Al Hodges bible and thought it might interest a few researchers on this list.

Here is my bible information

Descendants of James Ansel Hodges

Generation No. 1

1. JAMES ANSEL HODGES was born November 19, 1816 in Alabama, and died July
24, 1898 in Indian Territory.

He married (1) ANN SPENCER RUTLEDGE Jan. 12, 1837 in Miss., daughter of

Don Kelly and Rachael Clemons:

In reading over rutstates/georgia, I found many names which are in my ancestral tree.

I recently made contact with a Rutledge cousin in George who has done extensive work on his Rutledge line. He and his wife were kind enough to provide me with an extensive Rutledge file. I can not give out his e-mail address without permission but I can provide information on a number of individuals or pass along requests.

The names Jeanette Cuthriell and K. D. Rutledge were associated with some of the postings but I did not see an e-mail address for them. Your names were associated with other postings. I'm sending this to you and you can certainly see my e-mail address. I'm relatively new to the rutstates pages so I'm not sure how all this is handled. Can you advise me about what I might post to rutstates/georgia and or /alabama, how Jeanette and K. D. might be contacted, whether I should put my e-mail address on postings to these pages (most people don't seem to do this)?
All of the following are in my ancestral file.
1. John T. Rutledge, married to Sarah L. Davis
2. Thomas F. and Matilda Davis
3. Benjamin Rutledge
4. John T. Rutledge, above, had a second wife, Mahala Cook.
5. James Rutledge and Susannah Shearer
6. Joseph Rutledge, married to Jane Brooker
7. Edward W. Rutledge, son of John T. Rutledge
8. William Owen Rutledge, married to E. Partridge, M. Foster, and E. Robertson
The rutstates/georgia file also contained info, such as children of some of above, which I do not have in my file yet, but will probably incorporate when time permits.

NOTES: Answer to Kermit Rutledge SUBJECT: "Unidentified Ancestor" pic

John T and Sarah are buried in that cemetery along with Thomas F Davis and Matilda. Benjamin is their son. Somewhere I have a chart of the cemetery but haven't been able to lay my hands lately. I don't know who John T's parents were.

Jeanette Cuthriell

NOTE #2 same subject:

This will not help much, but my grand-father, Felix RUTLEDGE, was born in Chambers Co AL. Felix had a half-brother named John W. RUTLEDGE who was born c.1827 (probably in Morgan Co GA). I have been unable to trace the half-brothers and half-sisters of Felix. Do you know who your John T.'s parents were?

I looked in the Chambers Co Cemetery book ad there was no John T. or Sarah RUTLEDGE listed. However, there was a Benjamin, born 15 May1856 and died 27Sep1880. He is in the FREDERICK and DAVIS Cemetery. Where did this family go?

Incidentally, in a publication called "Family Adventures" there is a John T. RUTLEDGE who married Mahala COOK 17Jun1869 in Chambers Co AL. Any connection?

My name is Jerome Woody. My grandmother's maiden name was Rutledge. Her name was Hattie Rutledge. She married a man named Samuel Graham and they had 12 children. I think she was born in Alabama orginally, but lived her adult life in West Point, Ga. Please send me any names or list of Rutledges that may have or still reside near the Alabama-Ga. border. Especially, near Columbus, Ga., West Point, Ga., Phoenix City Alabama.

Thank you, Jerome Woody

To Kathryn Peeples: Did research last year for a descendant of Silas Holloway Rutledge son of William Rutledge (b. 15 March 1816, NC; d. 21 Feb. 1865) who married Ann Elizabeth Wood. William Rutledge's second wife was Mary L. Hammons. Silas of course was brother to your Mary Virginia Rutledge.

My research turned up the following:As you stated, William's parents are James Rutledge and Martha Rose Sadler. Besides William, their children were Sarah Gilkie Rutledge, born 1818; married James Brown 1835; Female born 1820; male born 1823; female born 1825; Melissa Rutledge born 1833; Joseph Rutledge born 1836; Thomas Rutledge born 1841; George Rutledge born 1844 and Lucy Rutledge born 1846.

James Rutledge does not have a female old enough to be a wife on the 1830 Jefferson Co. Alabama Census. A female age 30-40 shows up with him on the 1840 Census. Her name is Martha on the 1850 and 1860 Jefferson Co. Alabama census. She is probably the mother of the children born from 1833 on. Mother of older children unknown. James Rutledge is in Bethlahem Precinct, Pag. 451, Jefferson Co. Alabama Slave Schedule as owner of slaves.

Mrs. Henry W. Fowlkes (Laura Brown) born in Birmingham Alabama joined the Daughters of the American Revolution (DAR) #162531 listed in D.A.R. Lineage Vol. 163 page 159, under the ancestor, James Rutledge

(1749-1825) who served as a private in Col. John Collier's Regiment of N.C. militia. According to her lineage chart the James Rutledge (Jr.) (1789-1864) who was married to Martha Rose Sadler was the son of this James Rutledge who married Sarah Gilkie. Further research (such as wills, deeds bible reocrds) needs to be done to confirm this.

This James Rutledge (1749-1825) is perhaps the brother of Joseph Rutledge, from whom Ron Rutledge and myself are descended. John Rutledge of Rowan Co. N.C. who died in 1774 lists among other children, his sons, James and Joseph.

"Hi" Carol, Don and whomever: Thought I would peek over from this side of this brickwall and see what you are up to. Nice to be on this side for awhile, and to watch you go "Tsk,Tsk" as you search for Fountains. Great weather here today for that, I'll look around.

UPDATE: Cousin Leslee Dasher uncovered the AL estate settlement paperwork for our Joseph Rutledge, who died c. March 1860 in AL. Many, many clues are contained therein, we are tracking those now.

Nothing new on Joseph's Rutledge roots other than more records stating he was probably born c. 1810 somewhere in SC. Returned to the Yavapai, AZ files (obits, wills, cemeteries) to look again at the paperwork following widow Melissa Ann McCay/McCoy Rutledge's death in 1900, finding a few more clues on the children.

Tracked Little Berry Rutledge from Talladega to Tahlequah AR/OK in Fall 1860. Then he appears in a Cherokee unit of the Confederate Army by 1862. Imprisoned by the North in Alton IL, he dies there Nov. 1864.

We knew that children Iverson Aiken Rutledge and Harriette Adeline Rutledge accompanied Melissa to AR 1867-8 visiting "Kin" where they married, and Harriette stayed until her 1920 death in Boone Co. Somewhere after 1864 daughter Mary Ann Rutledge and son John Winston Rutledge disappeared, do not show up in AZ, we are searching.

C. 1876-7 Melissa and three youngest children join up with older son and CSA vet William Henry R. in Yavapai Co., AZ. There Frances Marian and Parthena Harden marry locally withing couple years.

More later.

From Mary Of The Rain Forest Hi, I'm new to the list and hope that someone recognizes these Rutledges.

1. George Rutledge b. abt. 1760 d. abt 1828 Limestone Co., ALA m. Elizabeth (?) b. abt 1764 PA d. aft 1850

2. Margaret Rutledge

2. James Fletcher Rutledge

2. Isabella Rutledge b. 1789 Franklin Co., GA d. aft 1850 (she is last found in 1850 Limestone Co. census living with son-in-law, John Brandon and Mary Thomas Brandon) m. Timothy Thomas b. 1785 NC d. 1850 Limestone Co., ALA

3. George Thomas

3. Mary W. Thomas b. 1821 ALA m. John M. Brandon 1842

3. James M. Thomas

2. Jane Rutledge b. 1790 GA m. (?) Brandon (Jane is found on the 1850 Limestone Co census with Benjamin R. Brandon age 22. ?Possibly her son.)

Now isn't that a fun group to think about! Is John Brandon the son of Jane Rutledge and her (?) Brandon? That would make John Brandon and Mary Thomas first cousins - not unheard of in those days.

Any and all help would be appreciated. (and needed!) 'til later, Mary of the RainForest

Subject: Henry James Rutledge

Don, I have some new information on my Henry James Rutledge found from the 1920 census. I did not previously know his wife's name but believed he had been married twice. According to the census, his wife's name (in 1920) was Martha and she was 32 years old. That translates to 1888, and both he and she were born in Alabama. So now it looks like this:

Henry James Rutledge b. Dec. 22, 1880 - d. Jan. 31,1958 pob- Ala. married - Martha ________? b. 1888 pob-Ala. *Henry and Martha then moved to Cathoula Parish, La. about 1918. Children of Henry and Martha -

1. Annie Mae Rutledge - m. Steve Gilcrease 2. James George Rutledge - m. Jenny ______? Children of Henry and (2nd wife - possibly Belle) 1. Arthur Deville Rutledge b. 1924 - d. 1971 2. Joe Rutledge 3. Bertha Rutledge

Any information on Henry James Rutledge would be greatly welcomed if someone else has him in their search. Thanks in advance, Ken in the swamp. [email protected]. You have my permission to post my e-mail address Ron.

P.S. You guys are doing a great job! Thanks from all of us struggling amateurs.
