Pruitt from Kentucky

KENTUCKY

Linda,

What part of Arkansas is your William O Pruitt  from?  I descend from
William Henson Pruitt, born 1843 in Ky and died 1879 in Romance, White Co.,
AR. W.H. was the son of Phillip O. and Elizabeth Gray Pruitt.  Just wondered
if there was a connection.

 Subject: [PRUITT] Laura Pruitt

 Hello All,
I'm brand new to this so please bear with me. I'm researching my
great-grandma, Laura Pruitt. She married Lester Wesley McLain, and they
lived in the area of Ringling and Orr, Oklahoma. They had a number of
children: Dora Dean (my grandma), Ida Mae, Addison, Albert, Geneva,
Winfred ( maybe more). Can anybody help?
My minimum goal is to try to find her first ancestors to come over
from Europe; everything beyond that would icing on the cake but much
welcomed and appreciated icing. I'm researching Atchley, Carroll, Cox,
Griffin, Howell, Kiker, McLain, Pruitt, Walden, Washburn ancestry.
               Thanks

There seems to be a lot of disagreement on who the
ancestors of Martin Pruitt (1752-1844) were.  Here are
some interesting facts that will help.

Martin's son Solomon was very well respected in
Madison Co IL where Martin moved his large family in
1806 from Greene Co TN.  Solomon was interviewed
several times during his life about the early days of
life before IL became a state in 1818.  In one of his
interviews he talked about his father Martin going
into the wilds of KY with Daniel Boone and others for
a 9-month period.  He also mentioned that his
grandfather William, his uncles Abraham, William,
Fuller, Isaac and Jacob and his father Martin were all
in the Revolutionary War, most seeing service at
King's Mountain.

There are some who have Martin listed as Martin Jr.
This is not a true statement.  Martin was given that
name as it was his mother's maiden name.  There was a
William Sr and William Jr in the family (Martin's
father and brother respectively).

William Pruitt was married about 1747 or 1748 to Mary
Martin.  William's will was dated 28 Jul 1812 and he
left $1 to his children Martin, Isaac, Fuller, Viney,
Rebecca and to the heirs (his grandchildren) of
Abraham and William.  The remaining portion of his
estate was left to son Jacob and daughter Mary with
Jacob as sole executor.  This all makes sense in the
Jacob and Mary moved their families to AL and William
made the move with Jacob settling in what was then the
Mississippi Territory about 1809.  William died in
1817 at the age of 103 years.  The Pruitt's from
William through son Martin have a history of
longevity.

Some say this William was born in 1739 and was the
father of one of the children mentioned above but they
have not included Martin and several other siblings in
their list of children.  Some also have that same
marriage period for William and Mary.  Anyone with a
sound mind would see that a person born in 1739 would
not have married in 1747 or 1748.

Also from a book published in 1877 William is listed
as the son of Henry and Mary Ross Pruitt.  The
descendants of Jacob (William's son) have shown this
through the history of Alabama.  I don't think that
back in the 1800's the family would have mentioned or
written a name anywhere if it were not true.

For those who have William who married Mary Martin as
the son of someone other than Henry and Mary Ross
Pruitt, I would suggest you provide the proof you have
to make such a claim.  Also Mary Ross married James
(aka Henry) in Elizabeth City VA on 13 Apr 1702 which
can be found in "Virginia County Records, Volume 4,
Early Virginia Marriages" published by Genealogical
Publishing Co., Inc. of Baltimore 1973 and edited by
William Armstrong Crozier.

It is said but I have not taken time to locate proof
that Henry and Mary had six other children:  Daniel,
Thomas, Henry, John, Ann and Wealthy.  John was
supposedly born in 1717 and died in 1820 Warren Co AL.

Don,
Hello there. I am a "PREWITT" descendant , Garrard/.Madison Co KY area.
General rule of research (note:general not always)Pruitt is spelled PREWITT
in KY.--In researching I've found this to be true most of the time. Perhaps,
may find a variance in the family name spelling, about Civil war time..Who
was for the South and who was for the North or who went west and who stayed
in KY.
Give me some more info about your "Henry" PREWITT/Pruitt  and include the
dates of when he/they left KY.
This is fun isn't it?  Happy researching.

Subject: [KYGARRAR] PRUITT, Methias and brother Silas, no sisters

Hi gang. I am CC for Washington County Oregon, Des Moines County, Iowa,
 and Franklin County, Arkansas.

I live in Washington County, have no ancestors there, so my work is for
researchers and for the love of helping people.

In Iowa I have Williamson and Beebe to look for....likewise later in
 Missouri.

In Kentucky only Pruitt so far.

In Tennessee and Missouri it is Rutledge and Owen.

In Virginia, North Carolina, Georgia and Arkansas it is Kelly,
 Richardson and McGee.

Most these ancestors ended up in Arkansas, Oklahoma or Texas.....how
considerate of them to move close together and make searching easy for
 me<GRIN

Most of my people came from Virginia through Georgia or through
Tennessee to points west, but I have tracked a bible entry for Silas and
 Methias Pruitt to Lancaster, KY.

Methias was my great grandfather and he died October 16, 1910, family
lived in Gainesville, TX then so that is probably where he died. That is
being worked on in TX and OK.

Methias's son Henry Melvin Pruitt was born May 25, 1882. He was my
grandfather who died Feb 25, 1918 (accident) in Ardmore, OK. The Pruitt
family "apparently" lived in Lancaster, KY 1882 so it looks like
(subject to verification) he was born in Lancaster.

Now Henry was a construction worker, but mom said his father and uncle
(Silas) were farmers before they came to north Texas.

Around Lancaster (Gerrard County) it is hard to know what to look for
first, but it seems logical to see first if the members have records
with Mathias, Silas or Henry Pruitt on them in the timeframes 1850 thru
1900, or in Henry's case 1882 through 1900. Grandma said they came to
Texas around 1900, but could have been earlier, or later, but not after
1908. (They lived in Gainsville, TX then)

What kinds of public records exist for 1850s era Lancaster? Did birth
certificates issue in 1882? How good were the land records 1850 - 1900?
Are there old newspapers extant or on microfilm for that era. What kinds
of records should I look for first.

Not all the Pruitt's went to Texas. Silas and Mathias parents and
cousins stayed in KY, so I bet I still have cousins living in Kentucky
 somewhere.

Happy to exchange what little I know between Pruitt researchers.

 Don Kelly

Are you related in any way to the Pruitt's of Virginia and then Kentucky?
My husband's ancestor was Nancy PRUITT who married Samuel LATTIMER in 1831.
Nancy's parents are Gholson PREWITT b 1787 in Mercer Co. KY and Frances
(Fanny) LEACHMAN
Gholson's parents are Anthony PREWITT b 1763 Lunenburg Co., VA and Susanna
GHOLSON born about 1761 Spotsylvania, VA.
Does any of this match up with anyone???
Thank you
Gayle

Hello, I am researching my Pruitt/Prewitt family and need help. My 2nd Great Grandmother, Melinda Pruitt b ca 1845 KY or TN married sometime in the 1860's (don't know where) to George Rice Hyden. The only Melinda I've been able to find of the right age was on an 1850 census of Whitley Co, KY with her father John Prewitt. Also included in the household was a sib, Jemima and their father John and John's mother also Jemima.

By 1860 John and his mother may have died as Melinda is living with a James Mayne/Maine, his wife and family. Jemima was living with a Lawson family not far away. I can not find Melinda and George on any census in 1870 but by 1880 they are on the Madison Co, KY census and in 1900 the Trimble Co. census. Neither of their death certificates are found in either county.

On a death certificate of one of Melinda and George's chd it indicates Melinda's maiden name was McKiddy/McKittery but on other chds death certificates they indicate it was Pruitt. This is the 1850 Whitley Co, KY census: John Prewet 45, Mary 12, Jemima 8, Melinda 5 and Julia 3 all b: NC, Jemima Prewet 75 b VA.

Could there be a connection between theses Pruitt/Prewitt family and the John Pruitt b 1806 Rutherford Co, NC (son of Spencer)? Any help greatly appreciated. Thanks Radine Willis
