Beebe in Illinois

Illinois

This may upset the apple cart for the descendants of
William Pruitt who was born 25 Jul 1799 in Knox Co TN
and died abt 1879 in Dallas Co, TX.  He was married on
20 Mar 1830 in Greene Co IL (per IL marriage index) to
Mary Powell.  According to numerous researchers of the
Pruitt family, William had a son William Anderson
Pruitt who was born on abt 1828 which indicates that
William was previously married but there is no other
marriage record on file for a William in the mid to
late 1820's in Illinois.

According to the various census, all of William's
children were born in IL, supposedly in Morgan Co,
however, this is where I may be upsetting the apple
cart.

There is no William Pruitt living in Morgan Co IL in
1830.  However, there is a William Pruitt who is
living with his wife and a child under the age of 5 in
Macoupin Co IL.  The is no other William in the Pruitt
family who fits the criteria given in the census and I
believe that this William is the William who married
Mary Powell and his son William Anderson.  There are a
couple of Pruitt families living in Morgan Co IL in
1830 but neither is William's parents and siblings as
they are in Greene Co IL.  From this it may be that
William Anderson Pruitt was born in either Greene Co
or Macoupin Co rather than Morgan Co as many have been
under the impression for some years.

This William Pruitt is no longer living in Macoupin Co
IL in 1840.  The Pruitt's were known to own their land
and in most cases the father would give some acreage
to his child upon marriage.  There is no record of a
William Pruitt owning land in Morgan Co nor his father
Abraham.  Abraham lived in what is now Jersey Co IL
when he died in 1832.  The 1839 tax list for Morgan Co
IL only includes a David Pruitt who lived there for
some years and was born abt 1805, but this David is
not part of the Martin Pruitt family of Madison Co IL.

I don't have access to the 1840 Morgan Co IL census,
but from what I can it appears that William Pruitt may
not have lived in Morgan Co.  Also if William Anderson
Pruitt is William's son then he is by a previous
marriage for which the search for his mother will need
to follow.

If someone has access to the 1840 census, I would
really appreciate if William Pruitt's family could be
located.  The records should show the following for
the parents and known children -

2 males under 5
2 males 5-10
1 male 10-15
1 male 30-40 or 40-50
1 female under 5
1 female 5-10 (maybe)
1 female 30-40

Thank you in advance for any help.

There seems to be a lot of disagreement on who the
ancestors of Martin Pruitt (1752-1844) were.  Here are
some interesting facts that will help.

Martin's son Solomon was very well respected in
Madison Co IL where Martin moved his large family in
1806 from Greene Co TN.  Solomon was interviewed
several times during his life about the early days of
life before IL became a state in 1818.  In one of his
interviews he talked about his father Martin going
into the wilds of KY with Daniel Boone and others for
a 9-month period.  He also mentioned that his
grandfather William, his uncles Abraham, William,
Fuller, Isaac and Jacob and his father Martin were all
in the Revolutionary War, most seeing service at
King's Mountain.

There are some who have Martin listed as Martin Jr.
This is not a true statement.  Martin was given that
name as it was his mother's maiden name.  There was a
William Sr and William Jr in the family (Martin's
father and brother respectively).

William Pruitt was married about 1747 or 1748 to Mary
Martin.  William's will was dated 28 Jul 1812 and he
left $1 to his children Martin, Isaac, Fuller, Viney,
Rebecca and to the heirs (his grandchildren) of
Abraham and William.  The remaining portion of his
estate was left to son Jacob and daughter Mary with
Jacob as sole executor.  This all makes sense in the
Jacob and Mary moved their families to AL and William
made the move with Jacob settling in what was then the
Mississippi Territory about 1809.  William died in
1817 at the age of 103 years.  The Pruitt's from
William through son Martin have a history of
longevity.

Some say this William was born in 1739 and was the
father of one of the children mentioned above but they
have not included Martin and several other siblings in
their list of children.  Some also have that same
marriage period for William and Mary.  Anyone with a
sound mind would see that a person born in 1739 would
not have married in 1747 or 1748.

Also from a book published in 1877 William is listed
as the son of Henry and Mary Ross Pruitt.  The
descendants of Jacob (William's son) have shown this
through the history of Alabama.  I don't think that
back in the 1800's the family would have mentioned or
written a name anywhere if it were not true.

For those who have William who married Mary Martin as
the son of someone other than Henry and Mary Ross
Pruitt, I would suggest you provide the proof you have
to make such a claim.  Also Mary Ross married James
(aka Henry) in Elizabeth City VA on 13 Apr 1702 which
can be found in "Virginia County Records, Volume 4,
Early Virginia Marriages" published by Genealogical
Publishing Co., Inc. of Baltimore 1973 and edited by
William Armstrong Crozier.

It is said but I have not taken time to locate proof
that Henry and Mary had six other children:  Daniel,
Thomas, Henry, John, Ann and Wealthy.  John was
supposedly born in 1717 and died in 1820 Warren Co AL.

I need some help to determine whether I am a direct descendant of Martin
Pruitt of Madison County, IL.  Here is what I know:

1. I am a fifth generation descendant of Jacob Pruitt, of Christian County,
MO, who lived from 1811 to approximately 1883.  He married Nancy Morrisett
approximately 1848 (in Missouri?).

2. A Jacob Pruit married Parylee A. Ruyle July 20, 1830 in Macoupin County,
IL.  Most likely in the same ceremony, John W. Ruyle married Katharine Pruit
July 20, 1830 in Macoupin County, IL (the license numbers were 21 and 20
respectively).

3. I am a sixth generation descendant of John W. Ruyle and Katharine Pruit.

4. Jacob Pruitt and Nancy had several children.   The first born male was
Isaac.
Other children include Orleana, William Riley (my great grandfather) and
James R.

I believe, and I am seeking help to prove it, that Jacob was the son of
Isaac Pruitt, one of the sons of Martin Pruitt of Knox County, TN and later
Madison County, IL.  Furthermore, I believe Jacob was born in TN, emigrated
along with Martin to IL, married and moved to MO. with the Ruyle family.
Moreover, I believe it is likely that John Wesley Ruyle and Parylee Ruyle
were related (perhaps brother and sister?) and that Jacob Pruit and
Katharine Pruit were related as well.

I lack the confirmation that Jacob Pruit who married Parylee A. Ruyle in
1830 either divorced her, or Parylee died (unlikely since there is a record
of Parylee being the daughter of Moses Ruyle) and Jacob later married Nancy
Morrisett.

Can someone shed some light on this for me?
Regards,
Jerry

I don't know if related but Polly Maria Beebe and her father (John Beebe mar.Sallie Clark of John Clark) b.17 Jun 1820 in Loraine, Jefferson County, NY married Horace Haskins (b.17 Nov 1820 Jefferson County, NY, son of John Haskins and Mary Tolman Haskins who d. 28 Aug 1783). Horace and John Beebe built a ship in Henderson Harbor and left with their families to Chicago in 1844 and settled in DeKalb where Horace became a wealthy farmer and businessman (reference John Deere fame). Horace and Polly had Mary Elizabeth and Martha Minerva Haskins. Martha Minerva mar. Daniel A. Beebe having several children including Willard Beebe (whom we call Senior on this end) who in turn married Mabel Rich twice and had Willard Beebe (Junior)and John Beebe. Junior mar.Florence Wade and had Nancy Beebe (mar.Geshner) and Willard Beebe (III). Might your Beebes be part of the John Beebe from NY above? I am seeking Mabel Rich (my GrGrandmother) who was treated badly and tossed out by Willard Beebe !
Sr. shortly before he tossed out Willard Beebe Jr. because he "looked too much like her." Mabel may have died in Oregon (mother is Carrie Rich). If connected, email [email protected]. Hope it helps, even if to eliminate extra names in your lineage research.

My files show Jane as Rebecca Jean Beebe. She had a sister Elizibeth Beebe who married a gg... grandfather of mine named Arathiel Snell. Jane and Elizabeth's parents were Joseph Beebe and Rebecca Peterson. I'm showing that Jane and Henry had at least one child named Matilda Lena Haskell born 2/1860. Elizabeth married Benjamin Woods in about 1867 a few years after Arathiel died and they also show up in the 1870 census in Richland County IL - right next door to Henry Haskell and Rebecca J. I'm certain we're talking about the same people. Most of my info comes from a fellow researcher whom I'll direct to this board.

Hi LuAna, and Audrey too,

Your 6th great grandfather William is my connection to the Beebe line and
my name is Joan Beebe Meddaugh.

So here goes my connection to William
I will start with his parents Samuel and  Mary Keeney, since you
already have the earlier relatives all sewn up.

As you stated Samuel and Mary had a number of children in fact, If I have
it figured right, our William's brother Thomas married a Ann Hobson, they
had a daughter  named Agnes that married Azariah Pratt.  Agnes and
Azariah had Seth Pratt who married Abigail Tully.
Seth and Abigail had Ezra Pratt.  He married a Martha?  Ezra and Martha
had Fanny who married a John Kneeshaw.  They had a daughter named Esther.
Esther married John B. Smith and had Ralph Smith.  Ralph married Esther
Roe daughter of Horace and Zilpha A. Jackson.  Zilpha's parents were D P
Jackson and  Rachel A. Bower.  They had another child they named Ethel L.
Jackson.  She married my husband's grandfather Frank Meddaugh.  They had
4 children. Preston, Elmer, Catherine and Rachel.  It is Elmer that
married Evelyn Green that is the father of my husband Larry.

And now for my Beebe line from William.  William married and had a child
Ezekiel, he married and had Zadock I, Zadock I and his wife had Zadock
II.  Zadock II and his wife had a child named Cyrus who married a Rhody
Chesebro.  After she died he married her sister Phoebe C. Palmer.  They
had no children only Cyrus and Rhody had children.

There were two boys and at least one girl. The boy's names were Cyrus and
Judson.  It is Judson that my line extends from. He married Susan
Blanding and they had 3 children as well.  Hiram was one of them and is
my great grandfather.  He married Ellen Amelia Hills daughter of James
Hills and Chloe Clark Hills of Brookfield, NY.

Hiram and Ellen had 3 children William L, Lela W.Beebe Smith and James H.
Beebe who was named after his grandfather James Hills.

William is my grandfather. He married May A. Payne daughter of Olive
Damon and Truman Payne of W. Eaton, NY. Later after May died in Feb. of
1922 in Candor, NY Tioga Co. he married Anna Personeous daughter of David
and Sarah Snow Personeous also of Candor.

William and May had two children.  Susan born Aug. 20, 1894 and my father
C. Arthur Beebe born May 6th, 1889.

Sue married Lionel Stevens and had a son Karl born about 1916.
Karl married Dorothy Knapp and had two children Kay in 1946 and Chuck in
1950.

Both are married only Kay has any children and she has three
grandchildren.

My father married Dorcas S. Beebe of Ulysses, Potter Co. Pay in June of
1920.  I am their only daughter Joan born in Dec. 15th, 1945

I married Larry Meddaugh  May 1, 1965 in Candor, NY He isgrandson to
Frank and Ethel Jackson Meddaugh whose son Elmer  married Evelyn Green.

We have two children Ami born in March of 1968 in Mesa, Ariz and James P.
Meddaugh born June 12, 1971 in Portland,Or.

Ami is single and lives in Portland.  Jim is married to Kirstie and has
three children on of which was from a previous marriage and lives with
his mother and stepfather who have legally adopted him.

Hope you enjoy this bit of history and if you would like more info out
this line/lines let me know.

Great GReat + great granddaughter to Willima and hi

Hello,
My great-grandfather, Warren Beebe, (1837) was from the Geneva, (Kane County) area of Illinois.  He and my great-grandmother (Amelia Sheldon-married May 1865) left Illinois (1870) for Iowa in a covered wagon when my grandmother (Carrie Beebe--third born) was one year old.  In 1880 he was in Webster T wp, Webster, Iowa and had three more children born there.  His children's names were:  Aurelia, Lyle, Carrie, Herbert, Amelia, and Hattie.
William Beebe, Warren's father, had six children and it is thought that William is the brother of John Beebe who also moved to Illinois.  Hope this helps.  If you know of any connection, please let me know.  Alice Ertel
