TENNESSEE

I will have to work on this. Can you tell me when your John McGee was born, or where he was living in 1830 and 1840? I've found Julia on the 1850-70 census records in Cannon Co., Tennessee. (1850 is the first year when they listed individuals, and not families, and gave precise... more or less...ages and not age categories.)

Here's what I found:

1850 census, Cannon Co., Tennessee, District 10
house #231/231
Jesse McGee, 22, miller, born SC
Nancy, 22, born Tenn.
John A., 10 months, born Tenn.
Julia A., 60, born Maryland
Nancy, 26, born NC
Jane, 22, born NC

on the same page in house 228/228
Ann Williams, 57, born Maryland
James M., 16, farmer, born Tenn.
Martha A., 13, born Tenn.
(I included her because she was born in Maryland. Could she have been another daughter of Samuel McGee and Rebecca Busick?)

1860 census, Cannon Co., Tenn.
house 1167/1167
Jesse McGee, 40, farmer, born NC, $800/$1000
Nancy, 31, born Tenn. as were rest in house.
Robt., 9, attends school
Saml., 7
Lydia, 5
George, 2
July, 1/12
Wm. King, 17, farming, attends school.
house 1171/1171
Julia McGee, 72, $100, born Maryland
Nancy, 38, born NC
Jane, 32, born NC
Tennessee, 7, born Tenn.

Also in Cannon Co., Tenn.
house 731/731
Levina McGee, 36, $800/$150, born Virginia
Jas., 18, farm laborer, attends school, born Tenn. as were the rest.
Jesse, 16, farming, attends school
Josiah, 12, attends school
(I can't seem to find them in the 1850 census)

1870 census, Cannon Co., Tenn., District 10, Woobury P. O.
house 25/28
Jessie McGee, 51, farmer, $800, born NC
Nancy E., 43, keeping house, born Tenn.
William, 27
Thomas R., 18
Samuel T., 16
Rebecca F., 14
George W., 12
Julia A., 10
Laura A., 8
Jessie L., 2
house 29
Julia McGee, 81, born Maryland
Nancy, 48, born NC
on another page:
house 12
Jessie McGee, 23, farmer, $150/400, born Tenn.
Mary A., 23
William L., 3
John M., 1

Now, going back. I thought the fact that there was a William King living in the household in 1860 was quite interesting. Col. John McGee's son, Rev. William McGee (1768-1817) married Anna King.... so I wondered. I went back and found William King on the 1850 census of Cannon Co., Tenn.

house 208/208
James King, 36, farmer, born Tenn. (as were the rest).
Agnes, 36
Lidia, 16
Robt. A., 14, attends school
Samson J., 12, attends school
Nancy E. J., 10, attends school
William J., 8
Jacob J., 6
Henry T., 2
(The J. initials could also be I.'s)

I don't know if these folks were kin to Anna King, wife of Rev. William McGee.

I actually think, since you said your Julia McGee was married to John McGee in Randolph Co., NC in 1816, that he was most likely a son of Andrew McGee (c.1760s-bef. 1840) and Esther Ann McMinn (1770s-aft.1850), who were married in Guilford Co., NC in 1792. They had 10 children, but I don't have the names for any of them.

The families of the other McGee sons, Rev. John McGee (1763-1836) and Rev. William McGee (1768-1817), had gone to Tennessee before 1800. It is, of course, possible, that some of their sons may have come back to NC..... Indeed, it is even likely. Both John and William McGee had received their early education under the tutelage of Dr. David Caldwell (1725-1824), a Presbyterian minister, who had established a classical school in Guilford Co., NC, now known as "Caldwell's Log College." Many of the leaders of the antebellum South received their early training there...and the school was still going strong in the 1810s.

I'd love to know anything you can tell me about Samuel McGee who married Rebecca Busick, and their family. Samuel was the full brother of my 5th great grandmother, Ann "Nancy" McGee (1753/4-1832, Mrs. Robert Lindsay), and I am afraid I know very little about him. What I have in my notes is that he spent some time in Maryland, then came back to NC before he died. I've heard a legend that he and his half brother, Rev. John McGee (1763-1836), sold the property that their uncle Andrew McGee had bequeathed them, and invested the proceeds in a sailing ship, which was lost at sea. (The McGee family seems prone to these "lost at sea" stories.) I have no idea if there's any truth to that. I can't even remember who told it to me.

At any rate, I look forward to comparing notes with you, and learning more about your branch of the McGee family.

Best Regards,

John Field Pankow

March 18th & 19th 2005 we will once again be cleaning the old McGee family cemetery located off Gimlet Creek Road in Lincoln County Tennessee. This is the cemetery that Jesse McGee and his wife Eustacia Ann (Stacy) are buried along with several of his 13 children. We have located several headstones including Tillman McGee, Abner McGee, Stacy McGee and Mattie McGee. (Photos are available)

Last Spring we were able to clear out most of the vines and overgrowth but a lot of work still remains. The remainder of the vegetation must be cleared, headstones need to be reset and cleaned and the fence needs some attention. I know that there are several McGee’s as well as other families that are directly related to this family. (I've seen your family trees and web sites) These are your ancestors.

Come out, help clean and meet other family members.  There will even be a printed "Family Tree" posted.  It would be great to have some input from others, clear up dead ends and pick up a few names that have been missed. If anyone out there is interested, please contact me [email protected]. I can supply directions if needed.

Thanks,
Tim McGee

I have in my notes that the Henry McGee who married Hannah Endsley was a son of Reverend William McGee (1768-1817), a rather well known Presbyterian minister in Tennessee, and his wife Anne King. William was the son of Colonel John McGee (d.1773) and his second wife Martha McFarlane (1735-1820).

As to the children of Henry McGee (born 18 Feb. 1789) and Hannah Endsley (married c. 1810), I have: William DeMarquis McGee (married Jane C. Nelson, 24 October 1831, and died in Oakland, Oregon); Henry McGee (married Sarah, and moved to California); Endsley McGee, (married Margaret… of Camden, Missouri); Aley McGee (married Abner Clemmons); Sallie McGee (married Johnson Copeland and, after his death, a Daniels of Oregon), and John McGee (married Elizabeth Scales on 4 July 1849 and moved to California).

The 1850 Smith Co Tn census (online) has Solomon McGee (age 70) living with a large family -- three adult men, three adult women (his children & their spouses?) and twelve children.  The adult men are:  John, age 45; Washington, age 38; and George Washington, age 30.  The adult women are: Leathy/Leatha, age 39; Sarah, age 31; and Jane age 24.  (John and Leatha are married)

The name 'Solomon' is found in the William MackGahyee/McGhee - Leann Broyles line -- their dau Katrina married Solomon Wilhoit.  I don't know if the 1850 Smith Co McGee's are connected to the Broyles line, but the Solomon name suggest the possibility.

My McGhee/McGee gggrandfather came from the Smith Co area, and I can't find any info online (my only source) earlier than 1841.  The only possibilities I've found are the 'Solomon McGees' (but the ages don't fit my family) and the Rev John/Rev William McGee line.  in the 'Reverend McGee' line, there are three men the right age to have fathered my gggrandfather:  Rev John's son William, and Rev William's two sons John and William B.  Any clues?  (Also -- my ancestor inherited some land from a William Owens -- so an Owens connection before 1841 needs to be in the family, to help me.

Thanks!

William is a much used name in my McGee line. My 2nd great grandfather was William J. McGee 1802-1872. We think he was born in North Carolina and his father was also William McGee. We believe his mother was an O'Kelly.  William  married Sarah Louisa Martin in Hardeman Co TN. They came to Dallas Co MO in the early 1850s and remained the rest of their lives and are buried in McGee Chapel Cemetery of which William gave the land for the church and cemetery. He had brothers John and O'Kelly that we know about.  John married Nancy Murphy. O'Kelly married Rosa Yates. I have worked some farther back and will do more as time permits, but have not had any luck finding William's parents. Linda Crawford

Based on a 1922 letter from Gentry R. McGee published in the book "The Millers of Millersburg and their Descendants" by John Nicklin, Jr in 1923 and some census records, I have put together some descendants of Archibald McGee.  Archibald McGee's grandson, Richard McGee (the grandfather of Gentry R. McGee) gave testimony for my ancestor, John McGee of Warren Co., TN, Revolutionary War pension application indicating intimate knowledge but not specifying a relationship.  I believe that my John was likely Richard's uncle or brother -- Gentry's letter talks of five grandsons and three granddaughters of Archibald but only names one grandson, Richard.

I am very interested in contacting anyone with more information regarding this family, and especially if there is a male descendant with the McGee surname.

It is more than curious that in Tennessee we see so many Kelly/Owen/McGee, particularly Owen/McGee family connections. Whether these McGees are the same family which married into the Kelly family in Burke County depends upon whether they are descended from Patrick Stuart Mcgee and Mary Speer who moved with the Hiram Kelly family to Georgia around 1823. So far we have found no direct connection between the McGees and Owens of Georgia with the same surnames found in Tennessee. We also have found no direct link with the Kellys who settled in Tennessee....did they come from Georgia? Were they even related to Hiram Kelly.........this will be interesting to unravel.
