Just to clarify my understanding, Our Hiram would have been about 70 years
old (exact birthdate unconfirmed) but also too old to serve in Hindsville.
Hiram Kelly Ellis one generation later would have been the right age, and it
figures his sons would have been too young.

No special checking needed, but if you run across it in Georgia records, one
unconfirmed report (have it filed under questionable) had Hiram Kelly as a
Leutenant in the Georgia (perhaps the county instead, militia.

If true, that would be interesting because in Habersham particularly, he
COULD have participated in the clearences, the prelude to the unfamous Trail
of Tears. We fairly clearly know though better documentation needed that
Hiram purchased Indian land in Habersham.......which suggests the Indians
(Cherokee????) had already removed volunteerily (perhaps).

All interesting, but a lot more interesting when the smoaking gun is found.

I continue to check documentation of the family history. It is slowing
the progress of writing the history, but I do want to be as accurate as
possible. My grandfather Ed Ellis was the son of Joshua Thomas
Ellis. My research located information that Joshua Thomas, and his
brothers William J. and Hiram Kelly served in the Civil War. I have
copies of Joshua's application for pension as a Civil War Veteran. Dale
Davis, provided me copies of HIram Kelly Ellis and his widow's
applications for Civil War pension. I have not located a pension
application from William or his widow. However, I did copy the
Military record from a film in Salt Lake. James Ellis, Joshua and Sarah
(Kelly) Ellis' youngest son was too young to serve.

I have not found an military related records for Hiram Kelly. However,
list night I found that there was a Patrick McGee who served with the
Continental Troops in the 1700s. It took me some time to locate the
number for the Family History Library Film, but persistence rewarded me
and I finally located the number. FHL US/CAN film 830404. Local
Family History Centers will order film from Salt Lake for a small fee,
however, I do not have time to follow to order the film and read it
before the reunion this summer.

The information I found leading to my search for the film is posted on
Ancestry.com's Revolutionary War Service Records, 1775-83:
Patrick McGEE is record twice as a corporal and once as a private. The
film reference is Roll Box 131 described as Continental Troops. There
is another Patrick McGEE listed in roll box 81 described as PA.

I have census copies for what I believe is our Patrick McGee from 1790
in North Carolina to 1830 in Habersham County GA.

If anyone of you decide to research this film for information let me
know. I know I cannot follow up for sometime. It will likely be on my
list of research when I return to Salt Lake next year.

I don't know if any of you are interested in membership in Sons or
Daughters of the Revolution, but if you are you will need this
information.

Time for me to get back to sorting through files, and checking my data

Mary Dooly (b. circa 1856) Married Hiram H Kelly in Forsyth County GA 10
Nov 1872. Hiram was son of Andrew J Kelly & Julia E. Holbrook.
Andrew's parents were Hiram Kelly & Elizabeth McGee who were married in
Burke County North Carolina 19 Aug 1813.

My data on the family of Mary & Hiram is from the 1880 Census. Hiram
was working in a sawmill. I don't find any more notes for them at the
moment, but will forward your message to some who have done more
extensive research on Andrew's family.

The children I have for Hiram & Mary are: Bella born circa 1874; Julis
born Circa 1877, and Andrew J. born circa 1879.

Good to hear from you. We are holding a reunion in Madison County
Arkansas, June 26. I expect we will be exchanging research information
then. Would you like to join us?

Mulling on Mary too. 1840 my direct Kelly line was living in Georgia. We suspect some of the line were in Anson and some were in Burke Counties NC...........but both lines were spelled Kelly, and Kelley appears nowhere in these lines. After 1858 settled in Arkansas, but older married children (7) stayed in Georgia, while two children, Joseph and Jesse came with Hiram, Jarrett could have been married more times, but also Mary's age may have neven been recorded right. I found a October 14 1977 from the "History of Arkansas" written in
1889, Madison County, Arkansas
I cannot say for certain that this is the Goodspeed publication, but I
suspect it might be. Dot Dyer may know.

It appears to be six paragraphs. The third (only one line) & fourth
paragraph are information about Jesse and the family.

The final paragraph:

During the war, from 1862 to 1867, Dr. Kelly resided in Texas, where he
was engaged in the practice of his profession. He was detailed by the
Confederate government to practice for the people left at home, and
etc. He engaged in merchandising at Goshen fro* 1878 to 1883, and
continued his practice at the same time. He was licensed to preach in
the Methodist Church, South in *!868, and has been zealously engated in
thaat work ever since. His wif and all the family with the exception to
the two youngest are members of the same Church. The Doctor has been a
Master Mason since 1868, and has always be* Democratic in political
views. He was Postmaster at Goshen for five years, and is and exellent
citizsen.

*These typos are not mine. This leads me to believe Pearl typed the
copy from a book. I suspect it may have been Goodspeed. However, I do
have material I copied from good speed that names Sarah and Joshua ELLIS
traveling with Hiram et al from Georgia to Arkansas.

I'm not sure my local library has a copy of the Northwest Arkansas
volume of Goodspeed. I have to attend a meeting there tomorrow so I
will check. Meanwhile. I am relatively sure there is a copy in the
library in Fayetteville and I believe Madison County has a copy in the
Genealogy Library.

If we do not have a copy before I go to Salt Lake, I'll try to remember
to check at that time. Also, I will check the films of the Civil War
Records to see if there is any information there. I would very much
like to have the documentation.

I am sure that Dr Jesse and Elizabeth had a family Bible, I am sure if
that could be located it would be a treasure house of family information.

I'm happy to have found this again. It provides some documentation, I am
told that the closer to the event the more reliable the information.
1889 is much closer than 1977 when the information was copied.

I posted this message on the Washington County List recently, but not sure I sent it on to all of you.

The 1900 Census of Fayetteville, Washington County, Arkansas inclues
Maggie ELLIS age 25 born 1874 in Arkansas was a resident in the home of
Jacob Johnson (born April 1861) and his wife, Saddia (born Sep 1860).
The Johnsons had two sons Burl L. age 15, and H???? C age 10. The
census indicates both Maggie's parents were born in Georgia. This is
possibly Margaret, daughter of Joshua T and Mary Palestine (Phillips)
ELLIS. Mary P's parents were Samuel Grover Phillips and Lela Elizabeth
Johnson.

I agree with Tom that this is probably Elmina & Joseph. I do have it in my earlier notes and failed to transfer it to the message sent yesterday. I feel relatively confident with the census data but, I don't think I need to remind any of you to do additional research for supporting documentation for any data I send you.

I do try to identify any information I question when I send it. I feel sharing our research will enable all of us to verify accuracy of our findings. I am very sensitive regarding documentation. Early in my research I found Hiram and Elizabeth Kelly in a family tree submitted to the LDS church. I spent time trying to connect those listed in that file to the Kellys who came to Arkansas. After some extensive research I found that the only names in that file related to our Kelly line was Hiram and Elizabeth. I found I believe it was seven Hiram Kellys living in North Carolina in the early 1800s. We all make mistakes. I know I will make them, but I do continue to document and identify where I located data to allow other researchers to check the source and make their own conclusions.

Time for me to get busy.

Hiram Kelly ELLIS' mother-in-law was Nancy Vaughn. His daughter Nettie Naomi married Arch Vaughn (I have not researched his ancestors, but I have his parents listed as Samuel F. & Nancy C. Vaughn).

Willie Calico Bohannan's Calico line traces back to a Vaughn family in Tennessee.

I checked only those I thought were connected to the Vaughn line, but I think there are others.

I was in the Sonoma County Library this afternoon and ask a friend there
how I might find if there is a Civil War Military Record for Jesse
Kelly. There is a volume of books there listing the names of those who
served. There is a J. R. Kelly in the book serving in an AR infantry
unit. I think he also found either J. R. of Jesse as well. We were
checking Texas & Arkansas. My friend said that many who had mixed
feelings about the war and did not want their name in the record used
their mother's maiden name to conceal their identity.

I'm suppose to be packing my car to leave for Salt Lake. I did not want
to forget to pass on this information. I don't think I will have time
to do research on this in Salt Lake. However, I will try. If I don't
forget. My brain feels like mush this afternoon.

These are notes from the Heritage Quest site. This is the site
accessible from home through subscribing libraries. I printed the
census pages and took these notes on line as I was reading the
census, when I finish my search I can key in my email address and the
notes are sent to my email. That file is growing rapidly.

I have only found Elmina through LDS Family Search in the 1880 Census
in Falls county Texas.    I have not located Malinda except as noted in
the last entry. I misspelled the surname and the name search could not
locate them. I used the brouse feature and searched for the page. I
added the page heading with my notes on the family.

My plan for tomorrow is to is to spend some time with the paper files
and get some scanning done. Attempting to double check or verify
information, I have recently added a lot of material to some of my
files and they are bulging.   I need to label some new folders and do
some more sorting.

Hope this is helpful. If you have comments, additions or corrections

The Wm Alaman family is not in the previous index published by the
Madionson County Genealogy SocietyI found this page accidently while in
Salt Lake last year.

Line 24 is Wm Alaman age 23 born Arkansas and his wife Malinda age 22
born in Georgia. The children David age 4 and Cyntha age 9 months were
born in Arkansas. Also residing in the house was Malinda Keely age 60
born in North Carolina.

This following family is headed by Sam Alamon age 47, a stone mason,
born in Kentucky and his wife Elizabeth 47 born in Tennesse, the
others in the family were born in Arkansas:Jesse age 21 is also a stone
mason, Martin age 19 is "at home", Jasper age 14, Samuel age 5, and
John age 5.

Madison County Society's index listed the family above as Hamon.
Heritage digitally inhanced their imagies and the family previously
identified as Hamon

I did not check the Family History Library Catalog for any film of Civil War records. My budget for the summer is pretty stretched already or I would call one of the professional genealogist I know and have them copy all of Benjamin's records for me. Maybe I can get it done next spring. Most of the Confederate records were confiscated at the end of the war and are housed in the National Archives.

I family line comes from the Cook side that you mention. My Great -
Grandfather was Isaac Newton Cook brother to Matilda, children of Thomas and

I read a file indicating Mary Jane Ellis b. 1867 had married Alexander
Shreeves. The children listed are: Dan, Lula, Ethel, Fanny, Alice,
Jesse, & Jackson. I'm searching for confirmation of the marriages, and

Mary Jane born about 1867 is the daughter of William J. Ellis and
Matilda Jane Cook, who were married about 1860. William & Matilda lived
in Clear Creek township of Washington County, and moved to War Eagle
township of Madison County before 1880. Matilda is daughter of Thomas
and Siney Cook. William's parents were Joshua C Ellis and Sarah E
Kelly, who moved from Georgia to Arkansas about 1858.

Other children of William and Matilda [COOK] ELLIS include: Elizabeth
(b. circa 1861), Josephine (b. circa 1863), Jessie R. (b. circa 1869),
Jacob Ward (29 Oct 1874 -1941), Isaac N (Feb 1874-9 July 1936), and
William Thomas (10 Dec 1876 - 10 Dec 1936) Some members of the family
moved to Kansas.

Connie sent a message that she had found Malinda Alderson buried, who
died in 1934, in Friendship Cemetery in Springdale, AR.

I attempted to find Malinda in the 1900 Arkansas Census, without
success. I did not read ALL of these only the ones I thought might be
helpful. I made notes for the ones I felt most possible. My eyes need
a break. I'll check the 1910 and 1920 indexes after I take a break.

I do have a person I believe to be Hiram's widow, Malinda Kelly (the
spelling on the census was different), in the 1870 census. The wife and
mother-in-law were both Malinda's and the birth places matched those for
our Malinda's. I have not found the family after 1870. They are on my
search list.

A oral history by Willie Bohannan in Madison County Musings Vol. IV,
Winter 1985, No 4 indicates"Malinda" the youngest daughter of Hiram and
Malinda Kelly married William "Bill" Alderson.

I found Malinda “Keelly” in the household of Wm. Alaman in the 1870
census. The family immediately before Wm. was Sam ALAMAN 47   a stone
mason born in Kentucky:Elizabeth 37 born in Tennessee; Jesse age 21 a
stone mason born in AR,
M age 19 , Jasper age 14, Samuel age 5, John age 3, and James age 3
months all born in AR.

I searched sometime for Alaman families and the began searching
Alderson. The following is a chronolgy of some data resulting from my
current search. I feel that this maybe the generations of the same
family. What do you think?

Oliva & James Parker. The information in this census suggest Oliva may
be Sam's daughter. Assumption that Wm, Jesse, and Newton are sons.

Samuel is head of household including Elizbeth age 37, Jesse age 21,
Mervin age 19, Jasper age 14, Samuel age 5, John age 3, and James age
under 1 year.
William & Malinda Alaman are the next family which also indludes
Malinda Keelly age 60. This leads to the speculation that Malinda
Keelly is the widow of Hiram Kelly, and Malinda, their youngest daughter.

I have not been successful in locating William and Malinda Alderson
after the 1870 Census.   The eldest daughter Elmina, who married Joseph
Brown, moved to Bell county Texas and is listed in the 1880 and later
Census there. Joseph and Elmina are buried in Resthaven Cemetery at the
southern edge of Belton, Texas. Eliza Jane "Louiza" married David
Richard Brown, Joseph Brown's nephew. Louiza's family were in Madison
county in 1870, Crawford County in 1880, and Beverly township Sebastian
County AR in 1900.

Does anyone have information or suggestions where I might find more
information related to Malinda and William Alderson?

HINDSVILLE 1895 SMITH TRIPLETS

An unsual birth was mentioned i an interview with Lloyd Smith, who lives south of Mayfield, in Washington County, Arkansas. His father was one of a set of triplets.

Jessie Daniel Smith was born 17 September at Osage, Arkansas, the son of William and Martha (Seitz*) Smith. Jess married Tennessee Belle Gilbreath, daughter of Edwin G. and Elizabeth Caroline (Smith) Gilbreath.

Jesse and Belle Smith had eight children, therree of them being triplets. One boy of the trio died, so the remaining boy and girl were raised as twins. Doctor Ellis was the attending physicia at the birth, since he was practcint at Hindsville at that time. Jess, a farmer, became ill while working on a thresher crew, and died before their eight child was born. Felle did not remarry, so raised the children alone. Jesse, Belle, Belle's parents, the baby boy, and another won who died in his teens, were all buried in Vaughn Cemetery located 2 1/2 miles west of Hindsville.

*There are a number of gravestones for members of the Seitz family in row 15, but there is no entry for Elizabeth, Caroline, or Elizabeth Gilbreath shown. There is a Harey M. Gilbreath, who died 1 October 1882 at age 27 years 1 month (husband of Sarah C. Roseberry Gilbreath) buried in row 17. next to Joshua C. ELLIS.

I copied some marriage records and found a possible for Tom and as I
find time I have been searching the census for some data to help confirm
this is the son of Joseph and Elmina.

I am still on the road. I have two meetings in Lancaster CA, one
tonight and all day tomorrow and will drive home Sunday. I've been
reading census and doing other online research when I can get an
internet connection where I stop for the night.

I have not been able to determine a relationship from the infant Brown
to Elmina. The 1900 census indicates Elmina gave birth to four
children and only three were living. Given the ages of the children in
the 1880 census I am inclined to believe it is possibly a grandchild or
perhaps not related at all.

Another Brown family living in the same area are not related to my
Kelly/Ellis lines, but to my grandmother's Johnston line.   I may be
able to find more information. I am looking forward to hearing from the
lady who offered to check the county records for information.

Salt Lake may have films which will help. I am scheduled to visit Salt
Lake City twice next year and will include the Brown research in my list.

I looked through some tax records etc., but in the time I had in the
Courthouse I did not find anything mentioning Jesse Kelly. It is
possible he did go to central Texas, and the talk of the area encouraged
other family members to go there. It is difficult to say and I would
assume that record keeping was not a high priority during the Civil War.

I'll continue to work on this. I'm happy to have gotten this much
information.

I'm also searching for the youngest of Hiram Kelly's daughters. I found
a Malinda Haman or Alman in teh 1870 census of Madison County Arkansas.
The mother in law of the head of household was Malinda Keely. The dates
and birthplaces fit Hiram's second wife and youngest daughter. I have
not found the family in 1880. The middle daughter moved to Franklin
County.

I'll send information as I find it. It may be a piece of the puzzle you
are working with and open some new avenues of reserch for all of us.

MADISON COUNTY:

I have searched the Madison County Courthouse extensively, including old,
old books that are stored in a vault that is located in the basement of the
Courthouse. I have not found any Marriage books prior to the Marriage book G &
H which cover the time period of 24 August 1901 to 23 February 1913.

Included in Marriage Books G & H are 32 marriages from the 1859-1899 time
period, which were re-recorded after the Courthouse fire. Evidently the people
of these 32 marriage brought their marriage certificate back into the
Courthouse and had it recorded again so that it would be on record.

On Page 266 of Marriage Book J, there is a handwritten note made by a County
Clerk which states that the last courthouse fire occurred November 29, 1902
in which Marriage Books prior to Book G were lost. He asked couples to bring
in their marriage certificates to have their marriages re-recorded.
However, few people did this.

In the basement vault there are various old Chancery Court books, tax books,
probate folders, and some miscellaneous items. However, I am certain that
there are no marriage books prior to the ones mentioned. Several years ago,
the vault was cleaned and organized and if there had been marriage books
there, they would have been discovered.

The Madison County Genealogical & Historical Society does have a book
entitled "Early Marriages of Madison County, which is a list of marriage dates
taken from family Bibles, tombstones, obituaries, etc. However, the marriages
are not recorded in the Courthouse.

There are early deeds, mortgages, and some other record books available in
the Courthouse which cover the period before 1902. It is my understanding
that these books were saved from the fire, but that not all of the books were
rescued.

The section on Madison County is close to my heart because I born there
in Hartwell and because my Kelly family settled there early, around
Hindsville in 1858.

I have copies of land records from that era.

Thirty years later my Rutledge and Owen bunch came from Tyrone Missouri
and settled in Benton County where by then some of my Kelly's also had
farms. My grandfather had a mill somewhere on Sugar Creek and the
Owen/Rutledge part had farms outside of Rogers near where Hifill Airport
is now.

Family legend says a couple of our Owen boys had farms over in Carroll
County, but I have no land records to prove up on that.

My Kelley line has been researched since 1969 and many records gone over by a David Kelley who lives in Texas. Most of my family went to the South ( Arkansas ) and stayed in that area. My GGGG ( fourth )Grandfather was Giles Kelley born somewhere in Virginia. He died in 1827 in Wolf Creek, Clark (Pike ) county Arkansas. Giles Wife is unknown but his wife was born in Virginia Children are Polly Kelley spouse William McFadden ( McFaddin ) William Kelley born 17 Dec 1794 Tennessee died 14 Feb. 1869 Wolf Creek Pike, Ark. Married 14 June 1814 Madison county, Illinois to Rececca McMahan Sampson Kelley nothing known except family moved to Texas Elijah Kelley born 14 Sep 1800 Jackson county Tennessee. I have been working on my wife's family but David Kelley is not well and has had to stop looking for our Giles Kelley. There is another Giles Kelley out there but not ours. Meek (cousins on my mother's Pruitt side.) I have little on Meek (grew
up with them), but Willie now lives in Missouri and I met her for the

SPRINGDALE -- Arnold Lee Calico, 59, of Springdale died June 14, 2003,
at
his home. He was born March 14, 1944, in Huntsville to Lowell Jack and
Cora Marie White Calico. He was a truck driver and was retired from
Pepsi
Cola Co. in Springdale. He was a Christian and attended Calvary Free
Will
Baptist Church in Springdale.

Survivors include one son, Kenny Calico and wife Tiffany of Lowell;
two
granddaughters; three brothers, Richard Earl Calico of Green Forest,
Johnny Ray Calico of Fayetteville and James Edward Calico of
Springdale;
two sisters, Wonetta Harrison of Huntsville and Darlene Burkett of

Services will be at 2 p.m. Wednesday at Clifty Free Will Baptist
Church

AGED LA JUNTA MAN IS KILLED
M. L. Kelly, aged aabout 80 years and residing alone at 1023 Carson avenue in La Junta died as a result of injuries received Wednesday when struck by an automobile on South San Juan avenue.
Kelly was walking along the street coming into La Junta when a car, driven by Estel Robinson came up fromthe rear. According to Robinson he turned his car in order to miss the aged man and at the same time Kelly thought he was getting out of the way of the car and stepped. in front of the or it. In robinson’s effort to miss the man his car ran into the ditch beside the road and turned over. In the car with Robinson were his mother and sister. None of them wer injured, but the car was womewhat damaged.
It was at once seen taht Kelly was seriously injured and he was rushed to the Mennonite hospital where he died about 11:30 Wednesday. He was vevereliy injured agout the head, his arms were cut and he recived bruises over his body.
Acting Cornore T. J. Cooper was called into the case when the man died and was making an investicgation this afternoon before he decides whether an inquest will be held.
The remains were removed to the Peacock Funeral home, where they wer will be prepared for burial.
The only knon rlatives of Kelly live in Ada Okla. and an effort is being made to get in communication with them this afternoon.

Funeral services for M. L. Kelley, automobile accident victim who died of injuries sustained last week when struck by a car drivin by Estel Robinson, were conducted at the Mennonite church Saturday afternoon by the Rev. J. A., Heatwole.
Arrangements were taken over by T. G. Kelley of Ada, Okla. and Mrs. Cora Carrier of Witchita, Kans., son and daughter of the deceased, who arrived Saturday morning.
Kelly was 80 years of age at the tim of his death, and is survived by seven children, including the two already named and Mrs. Myrtle Reddick, Roger, Ark,; Mrs. Etherl Hayes, Roger, Ark.; Oscar Kelley, Tulare,, Calif.; Oletta Kelley, Hinesville, Ark.; and Gene Kelley, Hineville Ark. He was preceded in death by eight sons and daughters.
Funeral arragements wer handled by Peacokc mortuary and interment was at Fairview cemetry.

I typed what I saw, omitting the other articles on the page. These copies were given to me and had no identifying data with them I have not checked the FHL Card Catalog to determine if these newspapers are on film there.
I felt sad for Uncle Marcus as I read these. Your Uncle Gene told me that Marcus had been buried lbefore he heard of the death.. I felt Gene felt bad that he did not have a choice about attending the funeral.
When I took Gene to the cemetery wher Grandpa Hiram and the M. L. Kelly infants were buired he spent a long time standing by the graves staring at them. He was visably sad.

If you have been around Huntsville for a while, you may have known my dad, Floyd. He ran the Huntsville Machine Shop for 33 years. Before he retired.

I am glad to share any information I have that might add to your tree.

Benton County, Arkansas, area around Don based on the information we are sharing, I think your time line is near
correct.

Hiram Kelly's and Joseph's land patents were in the area which would be
behind the church were we held the reunion and a little closer to
Hindsville. Ellis Trollinger, who arranged for us to use the church is
living on some of the land included in the land patents filed by Hiram.
His home faces toward the Joseph Kelly land patent. I can't recall the
exact distance but less than a half mile. Some of Hirams land was along
the War Eagle. I visited Hiram Kelly Ellis' great grandson on what had
been part of the Hiram Kelly land several times. I do not have the list of
previous owners. I'll ask Floy Crumley's widow if I can see the abstract
of the land to identify the previous owners.

I had not even thought of asking Ellis about the abstract of his land.
Ellis is from the James Ellis line.

My great-grandfather was the son of Sarah Kelly and Joshua C Ellis. They
had originally filed a patent for land in Washington county, but after
Joshua C died Sarah filed a patent for land in Madison county down. The
Colbaugh Church faces that land. It is now owned by Finus Watson.

I have been told that Jesse Kelly lived in a large house behind where the
cafe in Hindsville is now located. I can't recall if it was Pearl Crews or
Willie who told me about the location of the house. Pearl said when she
was a small child they loaded her in the back of a wagon and took her to
Uncle Jesse, who removed her tonsils.

I am not sure who owns the land now, but I suspect a search through the
abstacts would show when Jesse sold the land. Hiram K Ellis bought land
from the hiers of Jesse Kelly. I believe it is either the land were 45 and
12 split off just north of Hindsville or the land behind that house. The
record of the sale names the Jesse Kelly heirs, their spouses and the
location of their residence. Hiram Ellis and his family lived in a house
in that area. Pete and Clyde Ellis told me their father Calvin Ellis told
them he was born in an old house at that corner. Earl Crumley has a
trailer there and his mother put a trailer between his and 45 after Floy
died.

I copied several pages from books in the Madison County Court House. There
is something on one page mentioning E.R. Kelly widow of Joseph. I think it
is related to his estate, but I still have not extracted the data from
those pages.

It is getting late and my eyes don't want to focus and my mind is working
in slow motion. Thanks for sharing information.

Hi sis,

As I suspected, the birth of Hiram A. probably indicates Jesse and
family came to Hindsville late 1859 (after graduation in June) to early
1860 before Elizabeth became pregnant with Hiram.

John T. was born in Atlanta because Jesse attended medical school at
what is now Emery University until 1859. I don't know how many years a
medical degree took in those days, it's about seven years now, but
Montez knows for sure.

As I recall, John T. and Hiram A. died close together.

Does anyone know what they died of?

Since gggpa Hiram was buried at Auston Cemetery, several miles from
Hindsville, I wonder if Hiram moved from Hindsville after 1860.

Also, Marcus child is buried next to Hiram, so Marcus must have lived
around Auston cemetery too.............for awhile anyway.

Dad was born in Garfield, north of Rogers.

I'm in the middle of doing some software upgrades and getting a newsletter out, but I will be posting a query on the Burke County NC list seeking information about Alexandar H Kelly. I can only document one Benjamin Kelly, Hiram's son, born about 1822 in NC. died 19 Feb 1884 in Dawson County GA. He and Narssica and their children Mary and Hiram were living near Joseph and Andrew in Cherokee County at the time of the 1850 Census. Narcissa died leaving Ben with four children; Mary E. Hiram Lumpkin, Malinda, and Johnson. Ben then married a widow Mary Jane (WALLACE) CHATHAM. Somewhere in my research notes I have something about her first husband being killed during the Civil War. Also her parents were Jesse B. & Sarah (EDWARDS) WALLACE.

Narcissa SARTOR, the first wife, was born about 1825 in GA and died 7 Aug 1865. She was the daughter of Johns and Elmina (ROBERTS) SARTOR.
Notes on the family sheet in my database: "Benjamin stated on his disability discharge that he was born in Habersham County, GA". Reference: Record of Confederate Soldier from Georgia. Information in the personal records of Mrs. Arthur Cook Ball Ground, Georgia 30107. Benjamin's estate was probated in Dawson County.---this appears to be from the notes of Nettie Manley's files.
I do not have other information entered on the family sheet in the computer as yet but I am sure I have him in other census in GA. I am doubtful that he moved to South Carolina although anything is possible.
The Alexander H. Kelly I mentioned in a previous message tonight would be Alexander Hamilton Kelly. I think I have found him in NC before 1800. I'm tired and working on a newsletter and a mailing I need to get done and I'm finding it difficult to switch the mental gears tonight.
My friend in Salt Lake found the probate for the estate of Thomas Francis, who I believe is Joseph Kelly's father in law. Some of the information related to the probate was mailed to Mrs. Kelly. Some given names of the many children listed in the various census are the same as Joseph and Elizabeth's daughters.
Gotta get back to work.

Kristi, I have no specific information on Joseph Kelly and family in Franklin County. I had a great uncle in Madison County with the name Joseph Kelly, but that family came from Georgia in 1850. Whether or not they could be relatives depends upon when your family came to Franklin County and when. If they came before 1850 then they are likely not related. Also, I don't know if my Joseph had a son named Joseph, who would have been of marriageable age after 1870. If your marriage occurred around that time, we could be related. I need to check Joseph's family for a son also named Joseph. Gardner sounds familiar. My grandfather Marcus Lafayette Kelly may have had a son with that name. His 16 children were born in Madison County between 1875 and 1915. Meanwhile I'll post your information to the Franklin County query page for 2003. I really think we need to all get together and see what we really have and then all work on the gaps or discrepancies.

Willie Bohannan is my mother's first cousin. I know her well. (Oh, by the way, for JoNelle, Willie has had a stroke or something. They are running some test on her. She passed out a couple of weeks ago. She doesn't show any outwardly signs but are trying to figure out what happened.

I have collected information from Willie, Jo Nelle, Monty, and anywhere else I could get it. But I will admit, I have not had the chance to verify everything I have.

Let's all share what we have and see what happens. OK???

I think you may find some information about your family in the 1930 Census. Theordore R Kelley age 26, his wife Bessie age 19, and their son Theodore age 1 year 11 months were living in Esculapia Township, Benton County AR. Enumeration district 19, Page 2A, lines 20, 21, 21
Line 18 is Elizabeth Rounds, age 54 born IL. Line 19 was a boarder living with Elizabeth Rounds, which leads me to think she may have been a widow.
There are a number of Rounds and Kelly families in Esculapia Township.
1920 Census for Esculapia Township, Benton County AR. ED 19 page 15A
Line 38 Julia Kelley a widow age 43 born in IL, her father b United States, mother in Germany, and sons Martin P age 20, born Missouri, father born KY Mother IL, and T????? age 15. born AR father KY, mother IL.
Line 43 Charles M Rounds age 43 born NY, his wife Elizabeth age 43 born IL (her father born Baden Germany and mother Kansas), Carl 19, Emma 16, Charles 11, Bessie 9, Raymond 1.5
Charles and Bertha Falk both in their 60s and born in Germany lived a few houses away. There may be not relationship, but one never knows.

I think Edward may have spent most of his life in Washington county, but Marcus moved around more. The Kelly's come to AR from Georgia in the late 1850s.

I have been compiling some data from what I can find on Ancestry.com and LDS Family Search. I will write a summary report this evening and send it to everyone. Monty is the sister of Don Kelly and Marie Privitt. Tom Coniff in AZ( email:[email protected] ) is also doing Kelly research and has a lot of data posted on the net. Tom's wife is descended from the Phillips/Kelly connection. His website is descendants of David and James Phillips. The Phillips connect with Hiram Kelly's descendants in several generations.

Monty Ramsland lives here in CA. I think she may have gotten the Benjamin Kelly information from Tom. I think I sent him a message asking him about the source, but I don't recall receiving an answer. I'll try again. Meanwhile I am searching the net for every Benjamin Kelly in NC during the late 1700s and early 1800s.
Another site including Hiram Kelly is posted by the ex-wife of one of the descendants of Jacob Marvin Ellis & Laura Lorene Roberts (married 18 Sep 1892 @ War Eagle). Jacob son of James Ellis and Nancy Ellen Nelson moved his family to OK and the family migrated from the area around Durant OK to the vicinity of Lubbock TX.
I'll call Willie early tomorrow morning. Her blood pressure is high and she has other serious health problems. She has had some problems passing out in the past.

Do we have a marriage license for Jesse and Elizabeth?

Checking in my research notes on the family group sheet for more information on the marriage of Jesse and Elizabeth I found a note of information copied by Pearl Herdon Crews from "The History of Arkansas" written in 1889, Madison County, Arkansas stating that ."During the war, from 1862 to 1867, Dr. Kelly resided in Texas...He was detailed by the Confedreate Government to practice for the people left at home, and etc." I'd like to find a copy of "The History of Arkansas" to check the source of this infomration. It could be Goodspeed, but I can't recall having read this information in Goodspeed. I'll check my files as soon as I have time.
Today I'm cleaning house, working on a presentation I'm giving tomorrow and attempting to get my clear before I unpack from Salt Lake.

I found Jesse Kelly's middle name especially interesting in that a history of Habersham County, GA tells of two wagon trains from NC to GA at least one from Burke County. The trains led by Steven Kelly and Jesse Richardson traveled in such close proximity that the second trains used the cook fire sites of the previous train. I have not found documentation connecting either of the train masters to the Hiram Kelly family, but it is something to note. As I recall Steven Kelly was a minister, who led several expiditions for NC into GA.
One or the researchers from the Jesse Kelly/Parker line confimed that there is some other information in the family indicating that Richardson is indeed Uncel Jesse's middle name.
I initially found the story on an LDS micro fiche of Habersham County land records. I have since see the story, although I believe it is slightly different in a book of the early Habersham County history published by the daughter of the gentleman who compiled the history.

Madison County: Bohannan Mountain (cemetery) is I would say south and west of Huntville. As
I recall traveling from the Genealogy Library in Huntsville toward
Fayettville I was not very far out of town before I left turned and wound
over the unpaved road. Willie was giving me directions. There were some
beautiful views from along the way.

Benton County: I hope someone has seen a gravestone for Sarah Kelly Ellis, but I took a
few minutes tonight to search through the files. The birth date given is
that of Sarah Kelly Ellis, but the death date is very near that of
Marcus Kelly's wife Sarah Reynolds, who is buried in Austin cemetery.

Sarah Ellis died between the 1880 Census and the 1900 Census, or at
least I have not been able to find her in the 1900 census. However, I
have a copy of the abstract for the her land and it was not sold until
after 1900. My eyes are too tired tonight to read through the abstract.
It was before 1911 because the file includes a document signed Sarah
Clementine Ellis of McLennan County TX. She died in 1911.

I sent all of you a copy of my reply to the lady searching for Theodore
R Kelly. I don't think there is a relation but then as I stated in the
message I do not have information on all the families.

This weekend I again attempted to contact Howard B Kelly, g-grandson of Thomas Grover Kelly. Howard's daughter Susan sent me information on this family, but the email address she used is no longer valid.

Susan is the grandaughter of Howard Roland.

Tom G Kelly age 44 born AR, residing in LeFlore Poteau County OK. ED 26 (Page 4A Line 15 dwelling 85, family 86) his wife Florence E age 44, daughter Hilda age 19, and son Thomas Jr age 11. The street name is written on the census but I could not read it.
Susan's information indicated Thomas Grover Kelly died in Ada, OK 1946. She listed his wife as Florence Elizabeth Wallace. I don't know if there is any online access to OK death records. I'll check, that may provide more information. I did not find any military connection for this Thomas G Kelly listed on Ancestry.
I have a full schedule for the remainder of this week. I doubt I can manage to do any additional research before the weekend. I did send a message to a friend, who has a connection to the Library in Fort Smith and ask her to suggest some on line resources I can for that area. I have other relatives who were in Fort Smith at various times.

Benton County: Can anyone provide me with information to help me locate the cememetry
mention in here "...Sarah Kelly's stone says, "erected by M. L. Kelly:
died July 27, 1890: md. 28 Feb 1837, b. @1817; wife of Joshua Calvin
Ellis." M. L. Kelly was Marcus Kelly son of Sarah's brother Jesse
Kelly. He did a lot of stones in Benton, Washington, and Madison
Counties." This was in a letter from a genealogist who is former
resident of Madison county, who could not recall which cemetery.

Sarah (KELLY) Ellis' husband Joshua is buried in Whitner Vaughn
Cemetery. Her father, Hiram KELLY, brother, Joseph KELLY, and some
grandchildren are buried in Austin Cemetery. I have not found a grave
stone for her in either of those cemeteries. The family homestead was
near Colbaugh. Her son James ELLIS and his wife, Nancy E, are buried in
the Colbaugh Cemetery. Another son Hiram K. ELLIS and his wife, Sarah,
are buried in the Hindsville Cemetery. At least one grandson is buried
in the Huntsville Cemetery.

Her brother, Dr. Jesse KELLY is buried in Washington County's Goshen
Cemetery.

This is the only information I have found indicating Sarah's death
date. Her estate was not settled until after 1900. The county record
books for the year the property was sold have not been filmed by the LDS
church, so I cannot check those until I can make a trip to Arkansas.

Addison Jackson Parker & Elizabeth Ann "Ann" Richards had four children:
1. Lucis Vard b. 1 Aug 1881. (He is mentioned as L V Parker in the
Hindsville history; he had a store. His daughter is still living in CA
and knows a lot about the history of Hindsville.)
2. Jesse Victor, b. 26 Feb 1886.
3. James Elbert, b. 28 Oct 1887.
4. Alfred Lee Parker, b. 21 Nov 1891. All of the children were born in
Goshen (a farm north of Goshen).

Alfred Lee Parker married Beulah Harris, daughter of Thomas Milton Harris
and Augusta Ann Hammett Harris. They are Helen Beatrice Parker Bandeen's
parents.

And I am Barbara Bandeen Bennett.

My great-great-grandfather Jesse R. Kelly married Elizabeth Ann Richards,
One of their children was Mary Elizabeth Kelly.

She married Addison Jackson Parker, b. 25 Feb 1853 in Whitley, KY, d. 24
Nov 1929 in Goshen, Washington co., AR.

Addison Jackson Parker & Elizabeth Ann "Ann" Richards had four children:
1. Lucis Vard b. 1 Aug 1881. (He is mentioned as L V Parker in the
Hindsville history; he had a store. His daughter is still living in CA
and knows a lot about the history of Hindsville.)
2. Jesse Victor, b. 26 Feb 1886.
3. James Elbert, b. 28 Oct 1887.
4. Alfred Lee Parker, b. 21 Nov 1891. All of the children were born in
Goshen (a farm north of Goshen).

Alfred Lee Parker married Beulah Harris, daughter of Thomas Milton Harris
and Augusta Ann Hammett Harris. They are Helen Beatrice Parker Bandeen's
parents.

And I am Barbara Bandeen Bennett.

I live in San Antonio, TX. I have just started working on the Kelly
history. Helen Bandeen said she knows a lot of Civil War stories about
the Kellys so I plan to try to write those down in February when I go
back to AR to visit.

Willie Bohannan said her grandmother told her Jesse took his family to TX after Joseph was murdered. Partly for safety and partly because he felt his sons might try revenge. This is oral history and no documentation has been found.

Hiram Kelly's son, Benjamin, born 1822 in Habersham county died 19 Feb 1884 in Dawson Coutny, GA. Ben was married twice 1st to Narcissa Sartor, I believe that marriage was recorded in Dawson County. I have four children listed for that marriage Mary E, Malinda, Hiram Lumkin, and Johnson.
He next married Mary Ann Wallace Chatham. Census records listed four childen in this family: Jackson Fanny, Isabel, and Robert.
Mary Ann's first husband was killed in the Civil War.
Hiram's son Andrew J. Kelly born 25 Apr 1825, also remained in Georgia. He first married Julia Eloise Holbrook. Thier children were: Hirah H, Juda (or Julia), James, M.F M. and Elizabeth. Andrew possibly made a trip to the California gold fields. He also served in the service. He was active in the church in Cumming, Forsyth County, GA. The county history indicates he was involved in building one of the churches there. Andrew J. Kelly died 14 April 1906 at age 81 years. and is buried in the Cumming Cemetery. One of his descendants who grew up in the area sent me the information on Andrew.
Hiram's second marriage was to Arabella Ledbetter. I found no children for this marriage. Arrabella is also buried in the Cumming Cemetery.
Hiram H Kelly worked in a sawmill at the time the 1880 census was recorded.
Joseph and Jesse filed homesteads in Arkansas. It is believed tha Andrew may have traveled to AR and returned to GA.
Elizabeth Kelly Monroe, daughter of Hiram and Elizabeth (McGee) Kelly is believed to be buried in the Sons Chapel Cemetry in Washington County AR. Elizabeth died in 1879, bu I believe 1880 census data for Washington County indicates members of her family were living in Washington county.
The eldest daughter of Hiram and Elizabeth, Mary Elizabeth, married Theron Monroe. I have some census data for them. Mary was a widow liiving with her youngest daughter, Laura, and son-in-law, Alozo Gage, in Hightower, Cumming County GA at the time of the 1880 census. Mary died 21 Aug 1890. She and Theron are both buried in Dinah's Chapel, Shudders Cemetery, Forsyth County, GA.
I am not sure how much time I have during the next few weeks, but I will update my Kelly family time line based on the documentation I have located. Using marriage, census, and other records I can document Hiram and his families from the time of his marriage to Elizabeth in NC to his death in AR. I believe I located all of his and Elizabeth's children in the 1850 GA census.
The marriage for Hiram and his second wife, Malinda Anderson, is recorded in the Lumpkin County Marriage records for 16 Jul 1845.
Dr Jesse Kelly was living in Forsyth County, GA with Hiram and Malinda at the time of the 1850 census. Joseph, Benjamin, and Andrew were I believe all in Cherokee County at the time of the 1850 census.
As soon as I get all the Family History Month press releases mailed and all the flyers and hand outs for Saturday's workshop done, I'll pull the Census and Source files for the Kelly line.

Thanks for your response I cannot put our Kelly/Kelleys together. The positive information on the Kelleys I have is from Benjamin and Mitilda "Millie" Spearman Kelley and their children. William, David, James Turpin, Susannah, Nancy, Eleanor(my line).I have complete info on Eleanor. I also know James Turpin (J T) moved with his wife's family the Murphrees to Texas in the early 1860's.
I have lots of research on the Nelson Kelley family who moved from Stafford and Fairfax Co. Va. to Anson Co NC. Then to Laurens Co. SC. Nelson moved on to Bedford Co Tn. between the 1800 census and the 1810 census. His son Reubin moved along with him to Laurens Co. SC he was on the 1810 Census in Anderson Co. SC and had moved to Bedford Co. TN. soon after 1810. I know Reuben had a son named Benjamin. I cannot prove the link yet.
Some of the families traveling with this Kelley family out of VA. into NC didn't stay in SC but moved on into GA. The Higginbottoms moved on to GA. So who knows all of these Kelleys may be one happy family at some point.
If any of these names are in your line I would love to work with you on research.

Last six born in Madison County, Arkansas. NOTE: 1858 his father Hiram settled near Hindsville, Arkansas.

I am not sure of the source of the dates. I referred to the file from my former laptop and I am not sure when it was updated. I will cross referrence with my cencus notes and the files of our AZ cousin-in-law.

There was a Kelly Family Bible. Willie is sure she copied information from that Bible. Those she believed had the Bible do not recall having seen it. I think my next trip to AR I'll visit with the Bensons and any other Kelly Cousins in AR to compare data.

WillieDoris Callico Bohannan is the gg-grandaughter of Hiram Kelly and Elizabeth McGee.

She wrote an account of the death of her g-grandfather Joseph Kelly (Jesse Kelly’s eldest brother) “The 31st day of March 1863 had been a lovely one, but the last that Joseph Kelly would be privileged to spend with his devoted wife... It was a little after dark, and the family had just finished their supper when someone hollered “Hello” at the yard gate, only a few feet from the front of the house. Joseph expecting it to be a neighbor in need of help, stepped to the door to know who was calling... There was a single blast from a gun and Joseph lay dying ans struggling in his own blood. (page 160 -161, Madison County Musings, Vol IV Winter 1985 No 4.)
Willie’s grandmother, (Joseph’s eldest daughter), Cynthia Ann Kelly, married Wm Henry Bedingfield. Cynthia told Willie the story of the murder.
Willie’s mother Rebecca Francis Bedingfield, was named for Joseph’s widow, Rebecca FRANCIS.
Rebecca Francis Bedingfield married Ulman Carr Calico. Willie had one brother, Jame Monroe Calico, and one sister Lois Elizabeth Callico.
Ulman Carr Calico was the son of James Monroe Calico and Lydia Ann Smith. Ulman was one of elven children born to this couple.
Ulman’s parents were John Calvin Calico and Elizabeth “Betsy” Means. Betsy’s fother Josiah Means was bone 1790 in Washington County, AR John Calvin Calico was bon 1817 probably in Tennessee. Willie Calico Bohannan wrote: My great grandfather (this John Calvin Calico) and his sister, Priscilla rode all the way from Waren County (MacMinnville) Tennessee in a little two wheel cart pulled by one horse. They and thier mother, Elizabeth (Vaughn) Calico were part of a wagon train. It is unknown if the father, James, began the trip with them as there is no record of his death.
James Calvin Calico’s parents were James Calico born 1780/1785 Prince Edward VA. and Elizabeth Vaughn. I do not have information in the database on Elizabeth’s heritage. Although I did some reasearch for Willie that I believe may have been Elizabeth’s heritage.
Lydia Smith, wife of James M Calico Sr, was the daughter of Andrew Smith and Abigail Hinds. I believe that Hindsville was named for her family. When the post office was established it was placed in a building owned by the Hinds family, and since the name of a commuity was required when the post office was established, the community became Hindsville.
Andrew Smith’s family owned the property where the current Hindsville cemetery is located. The couple were traveling from a visit to one of thier parents, when Abigail, who was pregnant began to hemorage. The couple stopped under a big oak tree, and as Abigail grew weaker she told her husband that if she died she wanted to be buried there under the tree. She was the first person buried in the cemetery. The Smith who owned the land willed acreage for the cemetery, with the Smith family having first priority for burial plots, but other community members could be buried there if space were available. I beleive the drive into the cemetery crosses property still owned by a Smith.
Willie’s husband, James Bohannan, was the son of George Washington Bohannan and Mary Jane Jones.
George Washington Bohannan, born 1876 Cli fty Madison County Arkansas, was son of Isaac Washington Bohannan and Martha Elizabeth Johnson.
Isacc Washington Bohannan was born about 1846 in Clifty, Madison County. He was the son of Joseph Bohannan and Cynthia Whiteley.
Joseph Bohannon was born about 1821 in Tennessee. His parents were Sarah (?) and Abner Bohannan. Abner was the son of Sarah (?) and Elijah Bohannan. Elijah was son of Judith (?) and William Bohannan.
Willie was interviewed for “Fading Meories III” published by Carol Whittemore. She told many of the family stories. She has also contributed to Madison Musings over the years.
The land Willie sold when she moved to Missouri had been part of the Bohannan land setteld by James Bohannan’s ancestors. I believe it had been sold out of the family and Jim bought it back. Jim’s brother’s widow just moved off part of the original Bohannan land. The Bohannan children will take possesion of the land at the death of their mother.
Willie had one child born prematurely and did not survive.

One thought on Kelly line. I have some data from Flora Barrett and could not document the link. As I recall some of those Kelly’s were in South Carolina. They may well be related but I cannot connect them to Grandpa Hiram.
I can document Hiram and Elizabeth in Burke County NC through census and marriage records. They were in Habersham County GA in 1830, as were Elizabeth’s father Patrick Stewart McGee. Also in the 1830 census is one male I believe may be Elizabeth’s brother and there are two McGee females who married in Habersham county of an age to be some of the McGee females listed in the 1820 census in Burke County NC.
I have not yet researched the land and probate records of Habersham county for more information on the McGees.

I noted that the record is for Jesse K Kelly. While there may have been
another Jesse Kelly in Cherokee County in 1854, I think it is more

would be two Jesse Kellys both marrying Elizabeth Ann Richards.

The other research I requested related to Elizabeth M (Kelly) Monroe,
daughter of Elizabeth and Hiram Kelly born about 1819 in Burke County,
NC. I was provided data indicating she is buried in Sons Chappel
Cemetery in Washington County AR. Forsyth County, GA marriage records
her marriage 1840 to Thomas Monroe. I believe there is also a GA record
of a deed transfer from Hiram Kelly to Thomas Monroe. My file
indicates this couple were the parents of nine children. born beteen
1843 & 1863.

My friend found a Washington County AR record where Fanny L Monroe
presented evidence that Perry D Monroe had died intestate in Washington
County AR , 7 Mar 1880. Fannie L Monroe, widow; Thomas L Monroe; and
Fannie K. Monroe were named heirs-at-law. The record also includes the
coordinates for real property in Fayetteville and Washington County and
additionally personal property valued at $25.

This record is not a concrete indication that this is the family of Thomas and Elizabeth (KELLY) Monroe. There are some sound clues, if my records are correct. Thomas and Elizabeth had a son Thomas L born about 1848, and their youngest son's name was Price born about 1863.
Additional records may exist, and I may even have some in my notes. I have not had time to review the file, but I wanted to pass on this information.

MADISON, AR; CHEROKEE, GA 07/13/06 Joseph and Jesse were Hiram's two sons who came to AR.

Joseph fathered five daugthers, one was still born shortly after his death.
Another, Sarah, was born in GA and lived only about nine days.
Cynthia, Willie's great-grandmother, the eldest married Willliam Henry Beddingield.
Mary Adeline, married Thomas David Phillips
Laura Frances, I have no marriage data, died in 1883 at age 22, and is buried in Hindsville cemetery.
Jesse's sons:
John died at age 18, I have no marriage information
Marcus, I think you have all his information.
Hiram Alexander, died at age 12 buried in Goshen cemetery.
Edward L. (Eddie Lee) married Nora Walker on 30 Sep 1896. I have no record of any children.
Jesse's daughters:
Mary Elizabeth married Addison Parker
Julian married William H Benson.
Hiram's other sons remained in GA. I don't recall any of their children coming to AR, although that is possible.

When I was in good health I went to Ar. about 3 time's a year and did some work on gen. The Marshalls are buried in White Rock Cem.,in Marshall Cem. and Forum Cem. also in Liberty Hill (in Johnston County). I also have Curry That buried in Franklin County. I think their were 12 Marshalls and each one of them had 12 children so they are buried all over. Now in Madison County in Drake Creek Cem. Their are a lot of family their The Eubanks, Wooten, Duncan,Howard , Drake and some Sizemore are buried their. I think I have a connection all around their in that area. Hi Linda,

Kelly is one of my lines. Hiram Kelly and Elizabeth McGee were married
19 Aug 1813 in Burke County NC. They moved to GA about 1828. Elizabeth
died about 1843/44 and Hiram married Malinda Anderson in 1845,

Hiram, Malinda and their daughters, Elmina, Eliza Jane "Louiza" and
Malinda moved to Madison county AR about 1858.

It appears Hiram & Elizabeth's son, Joseph, and daughter, Sarah and her
husband, Joshua C Ellis, traveled with Hiram and Malinda. Dr. Jesse R.
Kelly and his family followed a year or two later. I am searching for
documentation that daughter Elizabeth and her husband Thomas Monroe,
also followed and are buried in Son's Chapel Cemetery in Washington
County.

Hiram's grandson, Hiram Kelly Ellis, son of Sarah and Joshua Ellis,
married Susan Lane, daughter of Samuel and Nancy (Vaughn) Lane.

My memory is less clear, but I believe there are also some Lane
connections through the children of Joseph Kelly.

Joshua C and Sara (Kelly) Ellis' son, Joshua Thomas married Georgeann
Roberts, born in Sumner County, TN, in 1884. Georgeann was the daughter
of Ben H and Matilda (Griffin) Roberts. Ben's brother George D Roberts
was an active member of the Masonic Lodge in Washington county prior to
his death in 1883.

George and Catherine (Link) Roberts were married in Sumner County. I
believe their daughter Mary Ann married James R Pond in Sumner County
before moving to Washington County. James and Mary Ann Pond are the
grandparents of Washington County's WWII hero Leroy Pond.

Leroy's parents were Hugh Pond and Alice Hollbaugh. Leroy died in
England 15 Jan 1845. The file I opened did not have the citation for
the Leroy's biography written by a Washingtion county historian,
published in the local media.

My current research focus is on the Kelly/Ellis Families. Hiram Kelly
died 13 Jul 1862 in Madison County. I have found bits and pieces of
information for his widow Malinda, and daughters Elmina and "Louiza",
but I am searching for documented evidence on the widow Malinda and her
daughters.

The information I have for "Louiza" indicates she married David Brown.
Based on census data I beleive their children were Daniel Hiram, Sarah,
and Alice.

I'll be happy to share any information in my files.

I found some links to your pages on Google. The information differs from my files. This is the information I have in my file. I'm sending blind copies to some other cousins, who can correct me if my information is incorrect.

Information provided me Marcus L.(4 Nov 1856) and Mary Elizabeth (21 Jan 1859) were born in Georgia. I checked the LDS 1880 Census CD's and Marcus L Kelly (age 22) born in GA was residing in Fayetteville Washington County AR. with his wife, Hester (age 21) , son Archibald (2) and sister Henrietta (18) were born in AR.
The 1880 Census the family of J R Kelly age 49 (GA) and his wife Elizabeth age 46 (SC) included a daughter Mary E. 19 (GA).
"History of Washington County Arkansas" page 846, is a biography of William Hamilton Benson, who married (20 Feb 1890 [ source=Washington County Marriage Book]) Julia Elazine Kelly. The book biography written by Joe Benson indicates Jesse Kelly graduated from Atlanta Medical School in 1859. I met Joe a few years ago, at that time he was an attorney in Fayetteville.
This would seem to indicate that Jesse and Elizabeth did not move to AR until late 1859 or early 1860.
Hiram and Joseph Kelly and Joshua and Sarah (Kelly) Ellis are believed to have arrived in Arkansas in 1858, and BLM records indicate they were granted homesteads in 1860. Jesse Richison* Kelly of Carrol County was granted a patent for 80 acres of land in Washington County in 1882.
I would appreciate any corrections to my data along with the source of the information. I'm trying very hard to be as accurate as possible..
Austin Cemetery near Best, AR is well maintained by a cemetery committee. My cousin and his wife were recently planing to mark their burial site in Austin Cemetery. I am not sure if she is still treasure of the cemetery committee, but during my last visit to AR she was contacting the person who does the mowing in the cemetery.
I have not located the parents of Elizabeth Richards, although I do check from time to time to see if any possibilities surface.

then to AR--then to TX.

Anyway, on Hiram, he was listed on the 1830 census for Habersham
county. No township was mentioned. It was a federal census with ID #
GA55993584

There were 4 Hiram Kellys in NC from 1840 to 1870 that were on the
census. If it is the same Hiram, he seems to have purchased land in
Fayetteville AR on 01 Feb 1860. there show to be three instances of
land purchase by this Hiram on that date at that location.

I had to stop last night, but I will do more looking today. I am DAR
regent, and today is DAR.

The name he went by in Oklahoma was Thomas Kelly, but his real name is supposed to be William Mandrew Thomas Kelly DOB unknown death
was 5-1947 1st wife Pearl Leoner Owen DOB 6-15-1882 to 1-1-1919 died with child.
they had three children 2 Girls Eulah, 11-5-1903 to 5-19-1977, Mable 4-30-1913 death unknown at this time. 1 son Harvey Benjamin 4-28-1910 to-15-1967
after the death of pearl, W.M.Thomas Kelley dropped one of the e's
and went to Kelly.
A story was told to the youngest son of Harvey's on Harvey's death
bed. That Thomas was running from the law in 2 states. The 1st State is
unclear he thinks it was either Alabama or Mississippi. I haven't been
able to place him in either state. The 2nd State he supposedly ran in to trouble
was in Kentucky. Then Harvey said they went to Ark. That is were Pearl
isburied, ( so this would have been around 1919) then moved on in to Oklahoma and that is where Harvey made his home. However, W. M. Thomas Kelly married a Thrasher and they moved on to Texas and that is where both girls lived their lives and died. If this rings any bells let me know.

Emma farmed for many yrs. in Andarko, Caddo County, OK. Emma died in
Hugo, OK (where I was born) don't have a yr.

Samuel Burke Kelley, aged 57, died at the family residence Wednesday night at
11:30 o'clock after an illness of a few days. Mr. Kelley has been owner and
publisher of the Lonoke Democrat and of the Cabot Herald since March 15th,
1924, purchasing from Mr. R. E. Bradford, of Fayetteville, Arkansas. Since
that time Mr. Kelley with the aid of his daughter, Miss Luna, who was placed
on the staff as editor, has made a wonderful success of the paper.
Possessing a friendly personality and being in the newspaper game during the
greater part of his life, Mr. Kelley has been able to carry on the business
in a manner which has proved successful and the paper has been a credit ot he
community of Lonoke. There was nothing that he would not do for his friends.

Thomas J. (Jefferson?) Kelly was in Joplin, Jasper, CO. MO 1900 census, along with his wife Julia, three sons (ages 8, 4 & 6mo), and Julia's sister Lillian Lehman.
Sometime after this time, they left Missouri and went to Arkansas. Julia is buried near Rogers, Benton CO. AR. I am not sure about Thomas. There was another son born possibly in AR. My former father in law was the 6 mo old in the 1900 census. His name was Martin Pierce Kelley. The family did not talk much about their ancestors and I am having trouble getting past Martin. I think Thomas may have come from KY and Julia may have been born in IL. Any help would be appreciated.

Smith. I have not been able to determine where Thomas came into the states or what ship he came on. I have been searching Bureau of Land Management Land Patent Reports @
Document # 708 dated August 3, 1882 indicates Jesse R Kelly of Washington County AR acquired 80 acres of land in Carroll County, AR: Section 28, Township 21 North, Range 26 West.

The documeent reads: Whereas Jesse Richison Kelly of Washinton County Arkansas has deposited in the General Land Office of the United States, a Certificate of Register of the Land Office of Harrison, Arkansas....

I found five documents for Hiram Kelly dated Feb 1, 1860 and one for Joseph Kelly dated June, 6, 1860. I did a quick calculation and if I added correctly Hiram had about 680 acres.

I sent a message this evening to Don and he said the college records are only for Jesse R Kelly. I would guess that other records exist somewhere showing his middle name. Perhaps something he signed as Postmaster, other land records, the court record in Madison County does not give his middle name but there maybe something in Washington or Carroll County.

I have 5 certificates for Hiram Kelly, and one each for Joseph and Jesse.
As with any document it could be misspelled one of Hiram's certifictes is issued to Hiram Kelley, the other four Kelly. There are probably other records somewhere. The college records occurred to me.

Marie might find something in the court records in Madison, Benton, or Washington County. He served as postmaster in Madison county, there may be something there. It was not on the probate record I found in Madison County but there are likely records in one of the other counties.

I sent a message to you, Marie and Monty with the BLM url. I have not heard from them either I wonder if I shut down before it was completely sent.
