Project Surnames:
Kelley Kellie Kelly O'Kelly

Project Background:
While a surname itself may give us incomplete or misleading or, at best, only general information about the origin of a family, DNA-testing can give us concrete evidence for identifying and separating family lines. Y-chromosome DNA testing is especially helpful because the male Y-chromosome is handed down, father to son, unchanged through the generations, except for rare mutations which, in themselves, can be helpful indicators of branching. The accessibility and affordability of family DNA testing is doubtless the greatest technical advance in the history of genealogical research because -- at long, long last -- we have a tool to break down those brick walls!

Project Goals:
The goal of the KELLEY/KELLY Surname Project is to distinguish between KELLEY/KELLY ancestral lines, worldwide. Any reasonable spelling variant is included (please feel free to suggest a variant you feel I have missed).

Please note that, at the outset, it makes sense to "cast the net widely." As the number of individuals tested increases and various lines become well defined, I will be more than happy to turn over these lines to other researchers specializing in them. I don't recommend splitting-up the project at the outset because I have a feeling we are in for some surprises with regard to where the divisions belong...

Also please note that, to participate meaningfully, you will need to share your male direct-line ancestry either in the form of a pedigree or, preferably, as family group sheets.

Project Results:
11 May 2005: We have results back from 13 out of the 14 samples that have been submitted.

We have matches of all 12 markers in three different cases.

There are matches for (29162) James E.Liewer and (29163) Jeff Kelly Sr.

There is also a match for (31241) Robert Oscar Kelly and (31057) Alvis Powell Kelley. This line goes back to Tyre Kelly who was in Clarke Co.,Ga in 1806.

There is also a match for (32193)Samuel Kelley Jr. and (34755)Archibald Kelley. This Lines Most Distant Ancestor is Darby Kelley, b.1705, Conemara, Ireland who died 1788 in Rockingham Co., NH.

Family descendancy data will be posted on the Kelley DNA Web Site as soon as it is operational.

My Kelly's were in Burke County in the 1780's. They came earlier from Virginia.
I'll link to the site from my Kelly database.
Good work. Don
