John Platten and his wife Mary Ann (neé Dyball) came from Sea Palling, Norfolk to the town of Yates, Orleans County, New York about 1849, amidst a large group of Norfolk emigrants. Upon arrival, he soon set up a farmstead in the town of Yates, Range 3, Twp. 16, Section 1, Lot 2. This continued the occupation he practiced before he left.
All of their children except the youngest, Thomas, were born in England, where we have found them born in the exact same order and with the same birthdays as recounted by his great-granddaughter, Mrs. Edith Colman, in 1977. Same of the children, however, were a couple years older than she remembered. Most settled to the south of their parents, in the towns of Ridgeway and Shelby.
From his death certificate, we learn that John Platten was born about June 1808 in County Norfolk, England, and his father's name was also John. We have not been able to ascertain his parents, but have not finished our investigation of several possible records that might be our John. We do, however, have definite records of his marriage and subsequent migrations until his death in 1898.
Mary Ann Dyball was born on 10-Feb-1809 in Dilham, Norfolk to Philip Dyball and his wife Elizabeth (neé Palmer), and was baptized two days later. It is noted that she was baptized at the Priory, and not at the parish church, but we do not know the significance of this.
John and Mary Ann were married for 53 years, until her death. They had 9 children, 7 of whom they raised to adulthood, and two who died young. These latter two were, naturally, unknown to Mrs. Colman, as she just knew the adult siblings of her grandparents and their families.
