           Billy eventually set the three slaves (Samp, Jim, Judy) given to
           them as a wedding present by Mary's father, free. One, known as
           "Nigger Jim" stayed with the Alpins, Billy paid him for working
           on the farm and he taught school for young slaves; he was beaten
           and hung from a tree on the Rader farm at Gay WV, it was never
           known who did it or why. Billy deeded each of his surviving girls
           about 290 acres, and built a two-story white house on each plot.
           Billy loved to read, he was a farmer, shoemaker, astronomer, and
           surveyor and attorney at times. Moved to their farm between Red
           Knob and Gay WV in 1841, to OH in early 1863 due to the Civil War
