It appears in 1030 as a witness to a donation that made his father to the abbey of Jumieges , and succeeded him in 1035 . He continued the policy of his fathers, good relationship with the Capetians of France and the dukes of Normandy , but the breakdown of their relationship in 1052 put this policy into question. It first tries neutrality between the two, but eventually join the camp of King Henry I of France in 1057 .

He married Biota of Maine († 1063), daughter of Herbert Wake-Dog I. , Count of Maine, but had no children.

His nephew Herbert II , Count of Maine, died in March 1062 , by leaving Maine to William the Conqueror , Duke of Normandy , but the lords of Maine, refused, revolted and chose as Count Walter, supported by the Earl of Anjou Geoffrey III the Bearded . William the Conqueror began the conquest of the County of Maine, taking the fortresses one by one and finally took the Le Mans and captured Gautier and Biota. These were held at Falaise and died in suspicious circumstances.

His death William the Conqueror arranged on two levels: first, he dismissed the count of Maine, and also Gautier was the last surviving child of Godjifu: he could have claimed the English throne on the death of ' Edward the Confessor three years later.

It was his cousin Raoul IV , Count of Valois , who inherited the county of Vexin and Amiens, except the towns of Pontoise and Chaumont-en-Vexin , which had seized the king of France.
