Civil War service from 8/8/1862 - 6/19/1865. Corporal in Company K, Second Massachusetts, Promoted to Captain in the 1st Regiment of Colored Soldiers (The Massachusetts 55th Infantry). Awarded the Medal of Honor at Honey Hill, SC for saving the life of Col. Hartwell by carrying him off the field under heavy fire.
