Sir John Crawford, Knight, is named in several documents. He died in 1248, leaving no sons,
but two daughters, who thus became the heiresses of the elder branch of the Crawfords. The elder of these ladies, Margaret de Crawford, married Archibald de Douglas, ancestor of the Dukes of Douglas. The younger daughter married David de Lindsay of Wauchopedale, ancestor of all the Clan Lindsay, and of the Earls of Crawford. Sir John Crawford, last in the male line of this elder branch of the Crawfords, was buried in Melrose Abbey.
