To strengthen the control of the house on the Cornish Nantes, he was elected ( 1059 ), then spend ( 1061 ) as bishop of the city's younger brother Guérech . On the death of Guérech in 1079 , his younger brother Benedict , Abbot of Holy Cross Quimperlé since 1066 , succeeded him as head of the diocese.
Before 1058 , Hoel was married Havoise of Brittany , daughter of Duke Alain III of Brittany and sister of Conan II of Brittany . At his death, he becomes the Duke consort of Britain 11 December 1066 . Only the county of Rennes beyond its authority, having been given to Count Geoffrey Grenonat , an illegitimate son of Alain III .
During the principate of Hoel, the Breton lords who participated in the conquest of England with William the Conqueror get important fiefs in England. It was here that Alain, son of Eudon of Porhoet, won the Richmond County .
The beginning of his reign is peaceful, but his wife died in Havoise 1072 . Hoel had to face between 1075 and 1077 in a revolt led by Breton feudal Boterel Geoffrey son of Aeon I of Penthièvre , Geoffroy Grenonat , Eudon I of Porhoet , the Lords of Upper Britain but also its historic stronghold of Cornwall .
Hoel only overcomes the rebels with the help of William the Conqueror and the intervention in the fighting of his eldest son Alain Fergent .

[ edit ] Union and descendants
Of his union before 1058 with Brittany Havoise five children were born:
Alain Fergent , Duke of Brittany
Mathias II , Count of Nantes .
Eudon, quoted in an act of the cartulary of Redon in 1089 .
Adele II, abbess of the Abbey of Saint-Georges de Rennes from 1085 to his death on 14 October 1152 .
Havoise, known by an act of the cartulary of the abbey of Saint-Georges de Rennes in 1085 .
Hawise of Rennes (c. 1037 – August 19, 1072) was hereditary Duchess of Brittany from 1066 until her death.
She was the second child and heiress of Alan III, Duke of Brittany by his wife Berthe de Blois, and as such, a member of the House of Rennes. Hawise survived her older brother Conan II, Duke of Brittany, who was assassinated by poisoning on December 11, 1066.[1]
Little is known of the life of Hawise of Rennes. She was married to Hoel of Cornwall (French: Cornouaille; Breton: Kerne) some time before 1058. Hoel exercised authority jure uxoris, by right of his wife, and continued to control the government after her death in 1072 acting as regent for their son. Hawise and Hoel were succeeded to the ducal throne by their son Alan IV, Duke of Brittany in 1084
