Gertrude Anna (Jache) (Leeds) Clapp, 84, died November 19, 2010, at Clipper Harbor Home in Portsmouth NH due to complications of Alzheimer's Disease.

 

Born January 29, 1926, in Manchester NH to Edward Carl and Gertrude Emma (Kuhn) Jache, Gertrude was the seventh of sixteen children. She is survived by her four children: Trudie (Leeds) Bergeron and her husband, Glenn, of Greenland NH; Sandy (Leeds) Jenkins of Manchester; Norman Leeds, Jr., of Hooksett; and Charles Leeds and his wife, Jan, of Hooksett NH. Gertrude lived with her daughter Sandy and grandson Kenny Jenkins, Jr., in Manchester for eight years, and then with her daughter Trudie in Greenland for three months, before going to the Clipper Harbor Home in Portsmouth for 11 months.

 

Gertrude is survived by four sisters Helen (Albert) Vermette of Manchester, Florence Guimond of Florida, Mildred Stimpson of Manchester, Shirley (Duke) Noyes of Londonderry, one brother Lawrence (Madeleine) Jache of Manchester, and four sisters-in-law Pauline Jache and June Jache of Manchester, Evelyn Jache of Ohio, and Myrtle Currier of Pembroke. She is also survived by her best and childhood friend Agnes O'Neil of Manchester, and many nieces and nephews.

 

She is survived by 11 grandchildren whom she loved dearly: Mark Reed and his fiancé Holly Phelps, Rebecca (Reed) Mari and her husband Jack, Kenneth Jenkins, Jr., Tiffany (Leeds) LaPointe and her husband Kevin, Leona (Leeds) Wallace and her husband Jeffrey, James Leeds and his wife Dawn, Jeni (Leeds) Beaulieu and her husband Kale, Crystal (Leeds) Floyd and her husband Nicholas, Tony Leeds and his fiancé Rana Klug, Larry Jenkins, and Cpl.Norman Leeds, III, who is currently serving in the U.S. Marines. She also loved her 20 great grandchildren: Jason Needham, Tracey Needham, Jennifer Needham, Donald Needham, III, Glenn Donovan, Haley Reed, Cody Reed, Jessica Phelps, Christopher Mohan, Joseph Mohan, Douglas Boucher, Matthew Boucher, Marriah Boucher, Tyler Leeds, Kayla Leeds, Kyleigh Bourque, Noah Leeds, Logan Leeds, Jordan Jenkins, and Tiana Jenkins.

 

She was predeceased by her beloved husband, Gene Clapp, who passed away in 1991. She was also predeceased by eight brothers: Charles Jache, Edward Jache, Ernest Jache, Walter Jache, Clarence Jache, Robert Jache, Richard Jache, and baby Carl Jache; two sisters Doris Beckman and Virginia Szopa; and her first husband, Norman E. Leeds, Sr.

 

Gertrude graduated from West High School in Manchester, Class of 1943. She was a 48-year member, a Past Unit President, and Life Member of the American Legion Auxiliary, Merrill Follansbee Unit 37, Hooksett, having served as treasurer for 20 years, and held many officer and chairmen positions. She was a Past District 4 Director, and a member of the Past Presidents Parley and Eight and Forty, Salon #226 Hillsboro, having served as Departemental Chapeau as well as many positions in these organizations. She and her husband Gene attended many National annual conventions, including one in Hawaii. She was a very patriotic person who loved her country, her family, and her friends.

 

Many years ago she was employed by Marion Electric in Manchester. When her last child, Chuck, was in college, she went to work as a waitress, first at W. T. Grant's in Bedford, and then Brick Tower in Concord. Her last employment was at Hannaford's Supermarket in Hooksett where she enjoyed her co-workers and her customers as well.

 

The family wishes to thank Gertrude's daughter-in-law Joanne Rumrill of Goffstown for helping with Gertrude's care in the late stage of her Alzheimer's. We also thank Mike Edison, a boyhood pal of Kenny Jenkins, Jr., who not only helped with Gert’s care for more than a year, but also called her Grammy. We thank the Elliot Adult Day Care Center in Manchester, which Mom loved attending while Sandy and the boys were working. The family extends its profound gratitude to Clipper Harbor Home of Portsmouth and its staff for their untiring efforts to make our mother happy and comfortable. We also thank the Manchester and Greenland Police Departments for their assistance when Mom decided to wander.

 

Calling hours will be held at Cain & Janosz Funeral home, 74 Brook St corner of Pine St Manchester, from 3-8 p.m. on Sunday, November 28, 2010. Funeral service will be held in the funeral home on Monday at 11:00 AM with the Rev. Robert Fellows, from the Community Congregational Church in Greenland,NH, officiating. Gertrude will be interred with her husband Gene Clapp in Pine Grove Cemetery, Brown Ave, Manchester. Pallbearers are her grandsons Mark Reed, Kenneth Jenkins, Jr., Cpl.Norman Leeds, III, James Leeds, Tony Leeds, and Larry Jenkins.

 

In lieu of flowers, those wishing to make memorial contributions are asked to consider Merrill Follansbee Unit 37, Hooksett, NH, c/o Sandy Jenkins, 40 Garland Ave., Manchester, NH 03103, or the Community Congregational Church, P.O. Box 128, Greenland NH 03840. Although Gertrude was a lifetime member of the Immanuel Lutheran Church in Manchester, she most recently enjoyed attending the Community Congregational Church in Greenland.
